View Full Version : Trade Deadline

I've done some scanning of players that Detroit is supposedly interested in, or who the experts think that the Wings should aquire at the trade deadline. I've decided, with the help of said experts, to put up my own suggestions as to who the Red Wings should target.

Peter Forsberg - the guy is top on almost half the leagues list. As much as I dislike Forsberg, he could be the guy to get people to start taking notice of the chance the Wings have at the Cup this year. Despite his injury problems, Forsberg is worth the risk. The asking price, according to an article on nhl.com, would probably be Filpulla, and probably a draft pick. Filpulla is highly regarded by the Wings organization, but I think it would be a move more than worthwhile.

Gary Roberts - Roberts is the grit that the Red Wings need. We are really lacking a player to make the other team scared to get the puck in the corners. Asking price is reported to be as low as a draft pick, and that again is a deal to take a look at.

Shane Doan - Again, a lot of teams are going to be taking a look at him, and again, Detroit could really use his presence. This is really only going to happen if the Coyotes decide they aren't in playoff contention, and if they feel they aren't going to be able to resign Doan at the end of the season.

From there, really the Wings have a bunch of less talented options, Knuble, Lupul, Samsonov, Tucker (depending on his injury status), and really a number of others. So what it really boils down to is, Detroit needs a top 6 forward, preferably with some physical presence. A long shot, Mats Sundin. That would be a great addition, but also a very unlikely one.

Now, who's going to go? I don't see Detroit moving anyone big at the deadline, despite the large amount of free agents at the end of the season. Lang and Schneider are probably moving on in the summer, and the same can be said of Datsyuk. But you have to consider that there are going to be so many other assets available in the summer, that we can afford to lose even all 3 of them, if we can make a run at some of the top free agents in the summer. But if someone is going to move, I would think it would be a defenceman. Detroit is one of the only teams in the league that is happy with its defensive group, and is really more than solid on the blue line. We have solid Dmen in Grand Rapids to deal, or bring up if we decide to trade one of our roster Dmen. In the end, I do expect the Red Wings to make at least one big move by the deadline. I just hope its the right one.
