(Sports Network/TSN.ca) - Two Canadian teams play matinee games today. The Ottawa Senators hope to continue their recent surge, as they welcome the New Jersey Devils to Scotiabank Place this afternoon, while the Montreal Canadiens host the New York Rangers at the Bell Centre.
The Senators have won five of their last six games and have climbed into a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 46 points.
Ottawa is coming off a victory Wednesday evening against the visiting Buffalo Sabres. Dany Heatley notched his sixth career hat trick and added an assist as the Sens downed the Eastern Conference-leading Sabres, 6-3.
His efforts were helped by Mike Comrie, who had two assists in his first game with Ottawa after being acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes in a trade.
Heatley leads the Senators with 50 points (23 goals, 27 assists) and is tied for fifth in the NHL in goals.
Wade Redden and Tom Preissing each added a goal and an assist for the Senators in Wednesday's win. Peter Schaefer also scored, and Ray Emery made 33 saves.
Today marks the third test of a five-game homestand for the Senators, who are a mediocre 9-9-1 as the host this year.
The Devils are also coming off a win, having earned a home victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday. Zach Parise scored twice and Marty Brodeur made 40 saves to lift New Jersey to the 4-3 triumph at Continental Airlines Arena.
Patrik Elias continued his strong play of late with a goal and Sergei Brylin also scored for Atlantic Division-leading New Jersey, which has won four of its last five games (4-0-1).
Elias has registered points in 15 of his last 17 games and has 24 points ( 11 goals, 13 assists) during that stretch.
The Devils, who are just 9-10-1 as the road club, begin a short two-game swing today. They will also visit Montreal on Sunday.
Jersey and the Sens have split a pair of meetings this year and the home team has won five of the last in this series. However, the Devils have taken three of their last five in Ottawa and have won 11 of the last 19 encounters overall.
