Good deal for Muckler. As I said before, it was clear Mucks didn't want long-term commitments and Comrie is a pending UFA. Many speculated Comrie was available and Ottawa would be among the teams calling. I really like this move given what we gave up. It shows Kai really did have some value for all his promise. He was useles to us though after what happened. He felt he was terribly misused by the coaching staff - not an entirely unfair stance - and told Russian papers he was still wanted to play in the NHL...... just not for Ottawa barring a coaching change.

Solves the 2nd line centre problem if there is one. Comrie isn't my ideal 2nd line pivot but he's proven to be good for around 30 goals on lesser teams than ours. Plus, after missing out (if you can call it that for a waiver claim) on Nedved we still needed a healthy centre.

We shall see if this is another Tyler Arnason-esque trade or not soon enough...

Senators acquire Comrie in trade
TSN.ca Staff w/files from CP

The Ottawa Senators have acquired forward Mike Comrie from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for center Alexei Kaigorodov.

Comrie has seven goals and 13 assists in 24 games this season. He missed 14 games earlier this season with a fractured right foot. Since returning, he has recorded nine points in his last 11 games.

Comrie scored 30 goals last year for the Phoenix Coyotes, but made it clear to Coyotes management he would be testing the free agent market this summer.

Armed with that knowledge, Phoenix has been actively trying to shed Comrie's $3-million ticket for the past several weeks.

"This allows us to be flexible, to determine whether we're a buyer or seller over the next 25 games leading up to the deadline," Coyotes manager Mike Barnett tells TSN.

"It puts us in position to take on a bigger contract if there is a fit down the road.".

Kaigorodov, a second round pick of the Senators in 2002, was signed to a two year deal back in September and appeared in just six games for Ottawa this season, collecting one assist. He was suspended in November for refusing an assignment to Binghampton of the AHL.

The Coyotes will maintain Kaigorodov's suspended status, meaning they own his rights but won't have to pay him until he returns to the NHL, perhaps, next season.

Kaigorodov is currently playing in Russia, as is Coyotes draft pick Enver Lisin and its hoped both are focusing on the defensive aspects of their game, which could provide Phoenix with a decent 1-2 punch next year.

The trade comes a day after the Senators lost forward Petr Nedved to the Edmonton Oilers on waivers. With top two centres Jason Spezza and Mike Fisher out with knee injuries, Senators GM John Muckler has been working the phones over the past few days trying to find some help.

The Coyotes will welcome the return of Steve Reinprecht to their lineup Thursday in Carolina and based on the solid play of veteran Yanic Perreault and the evolution of Mike Zigomanis, Comrie and his salary became an easy target.

"Ottawa had interest right from the beginning, but the discussions heated up a week ago," said Barnett.

The Senators were seen by many as needing a centre even before the injuries to Spezza and Fisher. Once everyone is healthy Comrie will likely be the No. 2 centre.

In six NHL seasons, Comrie has collected 110 goals, 127 assists and 252 penalty minutes in 345 career games with the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and Phoenix Coyotes. The Edmonton, Alta., native was drafted by the Oilers in the third round, 91st overall, of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He played in Edmonton from 2000-01 to 2002-03 before he was traded to Philadelphia on Dec. 16, 2003. Comrie was then traded later in the 2003-04 season to Phoenix on Feb. 4, where he has played since.

Comrie's best seasons to date came first in 2001-02 when he recorded 33 goals, 27 assists and 60 points in 82 games with Edmonton. He also played in the 2002 NHL YoungStars Game as part of NHL All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles. Comrie had his second 30-goal season in 2005-06 with Phoenix, and added as many assists for another 60-point campaign.

HC Connected: Mike Comrie's flight from Washington to Toronto has been delayed. He is now expected to arrive in Ottawa at 4:10pm. John Muckler said he needs to have a physical before he is part of the lineup for tonight's game. Because the roster needs to be finalized by 5pm, it's up in the air right now whether he will play tonight.

I'd like to see him suit up tonight so send a doctor to pick him up

Comrie's for sure more skilled then Arnason. He plays with two 4th liners and is the only player in Phoenix with close to a PPG. He can anchor our 2nd PP unit and can also play the LW on the second line if needed. With Comrie's capability and the fact that he want's to test the free agent market could turn out to be in Ottawa's best interest. The rumor is he’s well liked in the locker room so hopefully he can quickly gel

Then again with our luck…

I'd rather have Comrie than Nedved.
I'd rather have Nedved than Kiagorodov.

I hope Gretzky has asked our former soft Russian centre if he is willing to spend some time in the AHL and learn how to play something more than recreational hockey. Muckler should have made that crystal clear to Mr Softie before the Sens paid for his vacation to Ottawa.

As for Comrie, who knows? Muckler's previous deals for UFA's hasn't been great to say the least. The odds are that one has to work out...hopefully Comrie is the one...

I like Comrie and always have, regardless of what went on in Edmonton. He is a potential 30goal 60point player, and that is exactly what the Sens have needed for a second line center. As long as he is getting decent ice time he should fill in quite well.

Interesting move.

He has talent, he can play on the PP, and he can play some soft minutes and put up points.

I'll be interested to see what he can do with some easier minutes behind Fisher and Spezza once those two come back and some offensive talent around him.

Comrie looked quite good tonight getting 2 points in his first game as a Senator. No soft minutes either given our injury situation tand we played against on the league's better teams to boot. After tonight's performance I'm really excited about what Comrie can do surrounded by some talent if he got 30g and 60 pts on a poor Phoenix team. He even showed a willingness to play the physical game.

Good to see Muckler find a player to solve one of the Senators current problems. Now if he could only get rid of underachieving Gerber and his salary.

Just reading the Ottawa Sun:

The Coyotes already have a suspended Russian forward in Enver Lisin, who failed to report to Phoenix’s AHL affiliate in late November and went home to Russia.

Phoenix didn't learn their lesson? Maybe Wayne was just doing a favor for his old buddy Mucks, and dumping salary at the same time.

Comrie Makes the Sens Cup Contenders

I am a big fan of Mike Comrie and here is his chance. The Sens are the perfect team for his style and personality. In Edmonton he was always a rock star. The Comrie family is royalty in Edmonton and playing for the Oilers at his youngest age probably wasn't the best thing for him. And I think he'd admit that. He would need an entourage to protect him at the local establishments. It was a weird scene.

Then came a very public contract situation that saw him missing a ton of time and eventually saw him dealt to Philly in a trade that I have been told was part of three-way deal that fell apart. I don't believe the Flyers ever really though Comrie was there long term. I don't believe they thought he would ever suit up.

Then came the Coyotes. Phoenix is the polar opposite of Edmonton. Zero fan pressure. Phoenix hockey fans love their hockey, but they also love their golf and sunshine. So do many players that go there. You need to completely motivate from within, because you can fly under the radar in Phoenix. And Comrie did.

Now he is in Ottawa with guys like Heatley who andf Spezza. He has the talent to make them better and they know it, and they will push him and he is at the right point in his career to be pushed.

I wouldn't be at all shocked if Comrie becomes known as a missing piece for the Sens. This reminds me of the Goring trade the Islanders made at the deadline just prior to winning 4 cups. I think the Sens need to be looked at as serious cup contenders now.

Just a hunch, but sometimes a trade feels right, and this one has felt right since I first heard the rumors.
