Ottawa to Claim Nedved
Today @ 12:42 PM ET

The Senators are going to claim Peter Nedved off of re-entry waivers following their recent injuries.

From Jekkles.....how much is this going to cost us?

I expect Slappy to post a picture of Nedved's wife here soon;) I don't know if Nedved will help or hinder you guys. He has had flashes of brilliance in his career but I don't think he has it any more.

If he is to be claimed he won't cost us much of anything so I'd be okay with it. We'd have to pay him $1.178M but the cap hit would only be $589K. The Flyers would be responsible for the other $589K of cap space. Nedved is also a pending UFA so his contract is actally ideal for this situation. It wouldn't be a great move but a low-risk one with potential. And we wouldn't have to give up any assets. The bottom line is we need another NHL calibre forward with Fisher / Spezza bring out for extended periods of time and Vermette, Schaefer, and Neil also being hurt with unknown time frames.

Nedved was a great player at one point and still has his moments. Even in the new millenium Nedved was always good for roughly 50 points (or better) as a Ranger. And ask Edmonton fans how helpful he was as a late-season addition recently. His time in Philly is the only thing that has me and all others somewhat worried but when Hitchcock played Nedved as a checking line center I knew poor results would ensue. That's just not the right place for a player of his mold, let alone with a bit of an ego / attitude. The experiment was doomed to fail.

At the very worst, he's cheap depth for the coming weeks. Regardless of how well the boys are playing with this adversity - winners of 4 straight - Petr Nedved's name looks alot more inviting than the ones I've been seeing in the lineup lately. Josh Hennessy, Serge Payer, and Jeff Heerema aren't guys you want on your NHL roster each night when you're trying to secure a playoff spot. Maybe Nedved gets spurred by the move and finds some old form (like he did with the Oilers) which would be a great boost - even when we're healthy

Report: Senators to claim centre Nedved
TSN.ca Staff with files

After two trips through the waiver wire this season, centre Petr Nedved is set to return to the National Hockey League with the Ottawa Senators.

The Philadelphia Inquirer and Ottawa Sun report that the Flyers have placed the veteran centre on re-entry waivers so that Senators general manager John Muckler can claim his services.

The Senators have been riddled by injuries this season, with forwards Peter Schaefer, Antoine Vermette, Mike Fisher and Jason Spezza already out of the lineup.

In 21 games this season, Nedved has one goal, seven points and is a minus-20. The 35-year-old, who has been playing with the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms, was acquired by the Flyers in January from the Phoenix Coyotes and is making $2.356 million this season.

With Spezza and Fisher out for more then 10 games the cap hit will be 0 because Ottawa can take those two off.

Not so fast, Nedved claimed by Oilers

The third time really was the charm for centre Petr Nedved.

Sources tell TSN that after two previous trips through the waiver wire this season, Nedved was claimed on re-entry waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers by the Edmonton Oilers.

It was reported earlier in the week by the Philadelphia Inquirer and Ottawa Sun that Senators would claim him, but the Oilers who are below the Senators in the standings took him first.

That's an unfortunate loss, but the good news is that some of our other centers are coming back.

There is no mention of this transaction at either nhl.com or the Oil website.

EDIT: there is an audio clip of MacT talking about the Nedved transaction. Apparently he will be in Edmonton today and will be at Rexall for the Oil/Panther tilt but will not suit up. He will hit the ice tomorrow for practice.

Meh. It would have been nice to have Nedved right now but not a serious loss.

.....He has had flashes of brilliance in his career but I don't think he has it any more.

Much like a shooting star he burned out real quick, he showed a lot of promise early one but has not lived up to the hype of when he first came over.

He usually folds like the proverbial house of cards when the going gets tough.

Hockey Data Base - Petr Nedved stats (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid%5B%5D=3927)

He entred the NHL in '90/91. Since then, he has 963 games under his belt and 309 goals and 403 assists and is basically a 20 goal/season player and you claim he was/is a flash in the pan?

If you are going to make such outlandish claims do us a favour next time and back it up with supporting evidence.

Where did I say flash in the pan??

The guy is soft!

Cut dry short sweet and to the point!!!!!!!

If he was picked up by the Leafs it would be a totally different story Kelly, you would most likely be throwing it back in our faces how soft he is, but seeing as he was picked up by the Oilers he is on a different level!!!!!!!!

Right here....

Much like a shooting star he burned out real quick, he showed a lot of promise early one but has not lived up to the hype of when he first came over.

Do you honestly believe that he hasn't lived up to what the scouts were saying about him when he entered the league back in 1990? If he was over-hyped I'd like to see some supporting documentation. Check out the totals for the 1990 Entry Draft (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl1990e.html) where he was selected 2nd overall.

I never said he wasn't soft. Being soft and being a "shooting star" are two entirely different things. Being a shooting star means he was bright early on and then faded quickly a.k.a. a flash in the pan. Nedved's numbers (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid%5B%5D=3927) (if you have ever bothered to look) have been rather consistant over his career. However, he has shat the bed since leaving the Oilers. Maybe he will be able to regain his scoring touch with his return to Edmonton. Cripes, he was playing in Philly...need we say more?

For the record, he is soft. He makes Sykora look like a grinder.

Always have to go with the Leaf-speak, eh?

Sheesh, he's not even on the Oilers for a day and already the claws come out at the first sign of criticism.
