Hey guys, I found out about a week ago Ive been accepted to Optometry school in the States :boogie:. I have a question about cars and insurance that im hoping someone can help me with. I dont know if it would be better for me to get a car here, and get it insured here or buy one there and get insurance in the states? If im in the states for about 4 years does anyone know if my insurance policy will cover me? anyone have an idea about average costs?

2ndly, what kinda car should I get? I dont even know where to begin... i dont pay for my own car or insurance right now my parents pay for it.

Smart car or hummer...smart car or hummer??? Hmmmmmmmm.....

I think you best stick with the hummer (for safety reasons, of course).

I dont know about the advantages of having your car registered and insured in Canada as opposed to the U.S.

I have to imagine it's less of a hassle to do your business in the country that you're living in... but that's just a guess off the top of my head. Besides, with insurance companies, it doesn't matter where they are... it matters where you are. If you're moving to New York for example then you'll pay (high) rates to reflect that, no matter who's insuriing you.

Also, I finally listened to all those crazy commercials and switched to Geico... wished I did it years ago. I now pay less than half as much for better insurance than I used to have.

What's your budget? If you're only gonna be here 4 years and then go back to Canada... it might make a lot of sense for you to lease a car. Lower monthly payments is the biggest advantage. You could get a 48 month lease. I'm leasing my car now.

Congratulations.

For a car, think about something from Asia, Toyota, Honda, etc. Gives you good fuel economy and they are well built cars. Try finding a used one though, brand new ones are expensive.

For insurance, I would recommend talking to Canadian Automobile Association (CAA). I found the link for the Alberta Motor Association, the Alberta CAA affiliate. CAA has many different types of insurance and if they can't help you, they will know who can.
