U.S. captain Mike Modano had a goal and an assist to help the Americans snap Sweden's four-game winning streak with a 5-1 victory last night at the hockey world championships in Innsbruck, Austria.

Mike Knuble added a goal and an assist, and Yan Stastny, Erik Cole and Brian Gionta also found the net for the United States, which tied Canada in the Group F standings at five points apiece.

In a matchup of undefeated teams, Russia edged the Czech Republic, 2-1, in Vienna to take the lead in Group E.

Also, two-time defending champion Canada tied Finland, 3-3, and Slovakia beat Switzerland, 3-1.

U.S. goalie Rick DiPietro made the play of the game at Innsbruck's Olympiahalle, setting up Stastny with a cross-ice pass for a short-handed goal that made it 2-0 at 6:21 in the second period. Stastny skated in all alone and beat Swedish goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

Figures, the Canadians, whose team seems to be struggling lately, get to actually see the games, while the Americans, whose team has been playing well, don't get to see a single game.:curse:

This tournament has been odd

The Unbeaten Czechs lose to the russians..the swedes lose to the yanks..after beating the canadians..

It looks like it will be anyones tournament

Ridiculous, the US outshout the Ukraine 39 - 9 but couldn't seal a win.

Zach Parise had a chance to win the game with a last minute penalty shot but came up short. Parise was selected over Modano, Weight and Roach to take the shot. He said he was surprised and nervous when he got picked.

(Canada and Ukraine currently tied at 1 in the first)

Here's some more criticism of Laviolette for choosing Parise on the penalty shot, courtesy of Damien Cox. (A few mumblings some team members as well.)

IMO - Now it's time to look forward, not back.

It makes sense..why not send out an established player?

This reminds me of when Crawford didn't send out the right players in Nagano.

I would have sent out Roach or Modano for sure
