OTTAWA (CP) - Chris Hulit and Jakub Petruzalek scored 50 seconds apart during a second-period outburst Monday night as the Ottawa 67's earned a 6-2 victory over the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs.
Danny Battochio made 36 saves in goal for the 67's, who lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series 2-1 and have a chance to grab a stranglehold on the series when Game 4 goes Wednesday in Ottawa. With game tied 1-1, Hulit's shorthanded goal gave the 67's the lead before Petruzalek made it 3-1 a short time later and Wolves starting goaltender Kevin Beech was pulled.
Beech was replaced by Patrick Ehelechner and Lukas Kaspar made it 4-1 less than three minutes after the change. "The big goal for us was the shorthanded goal by Hulit," said 67's coach and general manager Brian Kilrea. "It didn't stand up as the winner, but to me, that was big."
In the third, Nick Foligno made it 4-2 but Mark Mancari scored and Petruzalek added a second on the power play to close out the contest. Beech returned to action after Petruzalek's goal. The Wolves had gone ahead just 39 seconds into the game through Bobby Chaumont, but Will Colbert evened the score for Ottawa on the power play.
Beech stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced while Ehelechner blocked nine of 12 for Sudbury, which failed to score in six attempts with the power play. Late in the game, Kyle Musselman sucker-punched Ottawa's Mark Mancari and received minor and match penalties.
Wolves coach and GM Mike Foligno said he didn't see the incident, which happened in the middle of the ice near the 67's blue-line and, although Mancari didn't finish the game, he wasn't seriously hurt. "It's a reminiscent hit of Bertuzzi, that's the way I look at it," he said. "You wonder, did that guy do it on his own or did he do it on his own?"
