View Full Version : Offensive defensemen?
The Canadiens are having a great start to this season and they are certainly not struggling putting the puck in the net! The biggest difference this year is the contribution from the defensemen. Out of curiousity, I looked at NHL.com and found out that Sheldon Souray and Andrei Markov are tied for the league lead in scoring for defensemen with 12 pts each!
RK Player team GP G A PTS
1 SHELDON SOURAY MTL 12 6 6 12
2 JOHN-MICHAEL LILES COL 13 3 9 12
3 ANDREI MARKOV MTL 12 2 10 12
4 MATTHEW CARLE SJS 14 2 10 12
And they both played 12 games comparatively to 13 for Liles and 14 for Carle... let's hope they can keep it up. :thumb:
This situation is not without reminding me of Toronto's situation last year though with McCabe and Kaberle as both Souray and Markov are scheduled to become UFA at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Your boys did it again last night. Souray has a monster shot! The Bs had a few lucky bounces, and the Habs had good reason to be irate about blowing --or in this case, not blowing--a would be penaly call late in the game.
Stuart was on the ice for four goals against. He netted two of his own, though.
All things considered, the game was entertaining. Looking forward to the next Bruins/Canadians game.
Samsonov hasn't scored in more than a month. What's up with that?

That would piss me off as a habs fan
Where was her last year? Now all of a sudden he's playing like a #1

While Craig Rivet is not an offensive defenceman he is one of the most important players on the Habs and he's an UFA too so the Habs are going to either lose out on one of their defencemen or shell out big bucks.I love the Habs defence corps, esp the top 4 who had monsters of a game against the Leafs on Saturday.Their physical play in that game is whats been missing but they came through against the Leafs and need to keep playing that way.
Nice to see Souray break out last night but where the hell was he last week getting no points in 4 games for my fantasy pool!
Cheers

Very tough adaptation for Sammy. Rumours are flying around Montreal that Chicago and Vancouver are scouting him... He and Kovalev are tying up $8 million on that line and they're not producing.

I'm assuming your refering to Souray? Far from wanting to make excuses for the guy but he was going through a very nasty divorce with his wife who took their daughter to California. His head simply wasn't in the game as much and in a recent interview (the one when he was suggesting that Gainey must re-sign Markov ahead of him), he was saying how thankful he was of the organization's support during that rough period in his life.
With the stories that the cap would go up next season, I wouldn't be surprised to see all 3 (Markov, Souray and Rivet) sign a new contract for next year with the Habs.

The Canucks cannot afford Samsonov
I'd much rather Markov or Ryder

Is it Souray who is speculated to want a move next year? Near his family or something like that?

Yes, there were rumours last year, during that divorce/separation, saying that Souray wanted to move to California to be closer to his daughter. Although I'm sure that if the occasion occured he'd most likely accept a move to the west coast, I don't think it's a priority from what I've read as he's stated several times since then being happy in Montreal and thankfull that they believed in him throughout his injuries and personal problems...
