Peter Sarno scored the game's only goal 26 seconds into the game and Wade Flaherty turned aside 31 shots as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Rochester Americans 1-0 to even their best-of-seven North Division Final at 1-1.
The Manitoba Moose got on the board early with Peter Sarno scoring 26 seconds into the game. Sarno corralled a pass from Josh Green and slipped it past Miller at the left side of the net.
The line of Kesler, Goren and Heerema almost doubled the Moose lead three minutes in with some aggressive forechecking but Miller was strong down low keeping the puck out.
The Amerks almost tied it up with seven minutes left in the first. Chris Taylor fed Paul Gaustad with a cross-ice pass. Gaustad had a wide-open net but fanned on his shot attempt. Later in the man advantage, Flaherty slid across to make a nice pad stop on Taylor.
Miller had some heroics of his own two minutes later, robbing Sarno on a rush and then sliding acros to save a Heerema one-timer.
Late in the period a skirmish broke out between the two teams that resulted in the Moose receiving their third powerplay of the game.
In the final minute, a flurry of Rochester scoring chances materialized when Chris Thorburn and Gaustad fired shots in-close that Flaherty turned away. After the whistle, Nolan Baumgartner received a holding penalty that would carry over to the second period.
After one, shots on goal were even at 9-9 though the Moose continued to hold on to their one-goal advantage.
Rochester had a beautiful scoring chance early in the second. Milan Bartovic broke in alone on Flaherty and tried to backhand a shot low on his glove side but Bartovic's shot hit the side of the net.
The Amerks had the first five shots of the period but the Moose almost scored on their first scoring chance of the middle frame. Alexandre Burrows and Nathan Smith broke in on a two-on-one and Smith was robbed on the initial shot while Burrows was foiled on the rebound attempt thanks to some strong netminding from Miller.
Rochester's line of Bartovic, Taylor and Thorburn had the Moose pinned in their own zone for a good minute and although they didn't get many clear shots through the Moose defenders, they created a lot of pressure deep in the Manitoba zone.
The Moose only managed six shots in the second period, while Rochester had 13 for a 22-15 overall lead in shots.
Unlike Wednesday, the Moose came out in the third period on the attack and Miller had to be sharp in stopping Heerema and Goren on chances early on. Miller also made a stop later on in the period off Burrows from the high slot off a Moose rush.
Midway through the period, Milan Bartovic received a penalty for boarding. On the ensuing powerplay, the best chance came a minute in when Sarno fed Goren in front but he didn't get enough wood on his shot.
Tension mounted in the dying minutes. Rochester blitzed the Moose net while Manitoba had trouble clearing their end.
The Moose have tied the series at 1-1 with the victory and now return home with three games at the MTS Centre.
Good for the Moose. The only team in the playoffs to have beaten the mighty Amerks.
Flaherty continues to look solid, and is the key to win the series.
On another note..what about Auld? He is the guy management think will be the backup to Cloutier..but he can't even start in the AHL  :D
