Sources tell TSN it's a three-year deal worth about $4 million per year.

The Devils, earlier today gave themselves a $7.1 million cushion under the current salary cap, which enabled them to sign Gionta. Gionta was a restricted free-agent, entering Devil's camp in good faith without a new contract.

Sources tell TSN that an independent medical evaluation has determined that Alexander Mogilny's chronic hip condition makes him physically unfit to play and that when the Devils file their roster with the league Tuesday, they will be able to designate Mogilny as a Long-Term Injury.

Nice to see that the whole "if you sign a 35 year old to a multi-year contract you're stuck with it!" really stuck...

How do you figure?

He had to trade away a 1st round pick so that Wilson would take cap space (not paid salary, just cap space) that Wilson wasn't going to use anyway.

Well he suddenly found away to creatively deal with a cap issue that was hanging over him, now the cap space is cleared, and with Mogilny going on long term injury that space is cleared and Lou now has room to sign or keep other players. There are some GM's who don't have that kind of luck/skill or whatever you choose to call it.

Well, I don't think trading the 1st with Malahkov was all that creative, I was suggesting that he do this ages ago.. I'll find the first if you want ;).

Mogilny is a loophole as far as I'm concerned, and I think it's BS.

You hear that? That's the sound of all the Devils haters claiming they were screwed because of the cap grinding their teeth in frustration.:D

I can't say as any of this really surprises me. I had complete faith that Lou would find a way to get out of the mess he put himself in last offseason. The moves he made with Malakhov and Mogilny have been speculated on several message boards over the last few weeks, and have come to pass. I'm looking forward to seeing what this team can do with all their key players locked up for at least the next 3 years.:thumb:
