Canadian Hockey League?

Yaa, that's right, a Colorado team won the title in a Canadian league.

Hey genius, it took me two seconds with Google to figure out that CHL means Central Hockey League (http://www.centralhockeyleague.com/).

Hey genius, it took me two seconds with Google to figure out that CHL means Central Hockey League (http://www.centralhockeyleague.com/).There are several team based in the United States that play in the Canadian Hockey League. Everett, Saginaw, Erie, just to name a few off the top of my head. It's really not all that unrealistic. When I think CHL, I think Canadian Hockey League. Relax.

Eagles speak up over turf dispute

By Darrell Blair, Special to the News

FORT COLLINS - The Colorado Eagles are done speaking softly. Now, they're carrying a big stick. During a news conference Thursday, the Eagles announced their reasoning behind filed Tuesday against two Broomfield investor groups and Wednesday against the Central Hockey League.

"As is the Eagles' method of doing business, we were very intent on making sure this stayed quiet and could be done in a businesslike way outside of the litigation process or the media," Eagles attorney D.J. Poyfair said.

Quiet talk didn't work, though.

The Eagles took action as a result of a suit filed July 29 by the CHL in the matter. That suit, filed in Arizona where the minor-league hockey system is based, asks a judge to decide if a proposed Broomfield team, the Ice, infringes upon the market territory purchased for $1 million in 2001 by the Eagles.

Ralph Backstrom, Eagles president and general manager, said all CHL teams are granted a 25-mile radius of "protected territory" from their home arenas. The Eagles' home, the Budweiser Events Center, is 37 miles from the proposed arena location of the Ice.

The CHL contends that granting a franchise in that location is acceptable under the league license agreement, which is signed by all teams.

The Eagles contend, though, the radius of the Ice's "protected territory" greatly intersects the Eagles' southern territory and negates their market in Longmont and surrounding areas.

If the Arizona judge finds the CHL interpretation is correct, the Eagles say nothing is stopping other teams from invading their market or that of any other CHL team.

"That should scare . . . every owner in the league," Poyfair said.

Chris Stewart, Eagles vice president and coach, said his team cannot afford to stand by while a competitor is plopped a half-hour's drive to the south.

"When we look at our fans, we look at the future. And when we look at our future here . . . we don't know for sure what's going to happen," Stewart said. "So we're trying to take care of it today. It's all about what we're doing now for the years to come."

The consequences could be steep for the CHL should the cases go to court and be decided in the Eagles' favor. Eagles brass would not comment on settlement options but did not rule out fleeing the league.

The Eagles are a model hockey franchise for the CHL. In two seasons, they have sold out every home and postseason game at the Budweiser Events Center, and they won a championship in May.

"If the Eagles were a marginal success, we wouldn't be here," said Martin Lind, chair of the Eagles' advisory board.

The Broomfield franchise would be co-owned by former Grand Prix of Denver general manager John Frew and developer and investor Tim Wiens.Via: Rocky Mountain News (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/sports/article/0,1299,DRMN_2_3979852,00.html).
