Simply a cap issue

Not sure why SJ took on his contract for so little, especially if the condition is that Korolyuk has to come over to NA.

The way I look at this trade, the Devils lose a conditional first rounder and a non-roster player (Malakhov wasn't going to play) to keep Gionta and Martin, and add some more depth. I'll take that exchange. I don't care who Lou had to bribe in SJ to make this happen.

The only condition on the pick is that it's top 10 protected for '07 (as in, Devils bomb this year, then they keep it, they bomb this year and next year, SJ Gets it anyway).

Korolyuk will never play in the NHL again.

So you traded a 1st rounder for a scrub and the cap space.

What's the word on Almo?

How are you so sure?

Korolyuk is made for the new NHL..he would do very well upon return

As far as I know, it still depends on whether his injury is proven to have happened in the NHL last season, rather than in the minors. If they can prove that, I think his salary comes off the cap, if not, the Devils are stuck with his 3.5 million.

I simply don't understand this trade from San Jose's point of view. Malakhov is retired, just hasn't signed the papers yet and they not only let Lou off the hook with his salary cap problems, but they now become San Jose's? And they give a first round draft pick??? Am I missing something here?

Family problems. Check any SJ board... he told Wilson it's not SJ - he has no plans to play in the NHL because he doesn't want to live in NA.

Being he played in the AHL for 19 games, I can't see how you're not?

I love this move by SJ. Their ownership won't allow them to spend to the cap, so they sell some of their cap space for a first round pick, and don't spend any dollars.

Beauty.

Well, Lou is trying to argue that Mogilny's hip was giving him problems when he was still in the NHL last year, before he was sent down to the AHL. It probably won't work, but that's about the only chance they have left.

Anyway, this move is pretty decent for both sides. The Devils get rid of a $3.6 million contract (which is the most important part of the deal for them) and get a depth defenseman (which they needed anyway) and somebody who might come back to North America in the future. Even if Korulyuk stays in Europe, the Devils actually gain a potential roster player without giving any up. The Sharks get a first rounder for a couple of players who didn't figure into their plans anyway, and after next season won't be responsible for Malakhov. Both teams get something without giving up anybody who was going to play for them this year anyway.
