Morrow Named Team's Fifth Captain Since Move to Dallas

The Dallas Stars announced today that the team has named left wing Brenden Morrow team captain. Morrow becomes just the fifth player to wear the "C" since the Stars came to Dallas in 1993.

"We're looking to expand Brenden Morrow's role in our leadership group and we feel that the time is right to do this," said Stars Head Coach Dave Tippett. "Mike Modano and Sergei Zubov will act as assistant captains and will support Brenden in every way."

Morrow, 27, signed a six-year contract extension with the Stars last Thursday that keeps him under contract with Dallas through the 2012-2013 season. Last season, he appeared in 81 games with the Stars, recording 23 goals and 42 assists for 65 points with 183 penalty minutes and a +30 rating. He set career-highs in assists and points and was the only player in the NHL last season to register more than 20 goals and over 125 penalty minutes.

During the 2006 playoffs against Colorado, he collected six points (1-5-6) in five games. The 5-11, 205-pound left wing tied for the team lead in playoff assists and points. In 53 career playoff games, Morrow has posted six goals and 18 assists for 24 points.

The Stars' first round selection (25th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Morrow has appeared in 451 career NHL games (all with Dallas). Over his NHL career, he has tallied 120 goals and 149 assists for 269 points with 758 penalty minutes. Since coming into the league in 1999-00, he has the best plus/minus of any Dallas player (+98) and has never been a "minus" player in a season.

"This is an honor and a privilege to serve as captain of the Dallas Stars," said Morrow. "When I look around our locker room and I see all of the leaders we have in Mike Modano, Sergei Zubov, Jere Lehtinen, Stu Barnes, Darryl Sydor, Jeff Halpern, Eric Lindros, Marty Turco, just to name a few -- I realize how important it is to have a group of leaders that rally together to accomplish great things. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead for this team and for me."

WTG Morrow!

It was only a matter of time. Modano has never really struck me as the captain type, but Morrow certainly does. Morrow's gotten a healthy raise and the captaincy in the last week. I hope it pays off.:thumb:

Posted this elsewhere, so I might as well do it here too.

Maybe Mo is okay with it, maybe he isn't. To hear Dougie discuss the matter with Sturm and DA Dan, the organIzation or at least Dougie isn't concerned and does not know whether or not Mo was okay with it or not. He says that Tippett discussed the matter with Mo and he hasn't spoken to Mo about it himself. Another showing that Dougie wasn't paying attention as an assistant GM.

Even if Mo is okay with it, there will be impact in some form or fashion. There is the respect matter that encompasses many parties inside and outside the organIzation.

I was not a pro-Mo for Captain person when he received it. However, once you put it on a guy, taking it away creates issues whether intended or wanted. Dougie says Morrow wasn't ready at the time they gave it to Mo. Really? Why not Dougie. Was it maturity? It certainly wasn't because he lacked the key ingredient [never ending effort] that earned it for him now. Maybe it was a matter of his coming to the point of speaking out and loud in the room. Let's see now, they gave it to a guy knowingly that was not a vocal leader when they gave it to Mo.

Dougie, as is usually the case, spoke truths, half-truths and non-truths when on with Sturm and DA Dan.

Morrow is Captain material without a doubt. He is the one player most suited to wearing the C IMO. But he was that player back when they gave the C to Modano. The organIzation gave it to Mo out of respect which is an honorable thing to do I suppose. However, taking it away from him is disrespectful no matter how you spin it. If Morrow wasn't ready in the organIzation's opinion, fine and dandy but if the thought was to give it to him down the road [before Mo's retirement or departure in FA] then maybe Mo's wearing the C should have been couched as an interim deal. How much worse would that be than doing it in this manner?

Stevie Y had the C thrust upon him at an early age and likely before he really was ready for it. That is probably on of the reasons he became on of the best leaders to ever don the C. Maybe Morrow should have been dealt with in the same manner and if he truly is the leader everyone believes him to be, he would have been better for it.

Certainly, having guys like Zubie, Stu, Mo, E and others who have held leadership roles before should help him. However, that could retard his development and place him in strange circumstance.

In the end, the letter doesn't make the leader. Leaders really don't lead in as much as they inspire others to follow. I believe Morrow has done that in the past by his play. If it takes placing the C on his sweater to get the others to respond, then the real problem here isn't who is wearing the C but those who aren't.

Were Dougie worth two cents, he might actually get it.

Congrats to Morrow on being annoited and hoping Mo goes out and just does his thing to the highest and most unburdened level he is capable of delivering.

I've always admired his game. I hope he rises to the expectations being laid on him in Dallas. I think he will make a great captain.

Morrow is by all reports captain material..

But you don't strip a guy and keep him on your team unless it's the Gretzky clause.

Just can't see anyway to justify this.

There's another story that doesn't sound quite right... the end of Modano in big D?
