View Full Version : What do you miss the most from NHL Hockey?

Simple Question.

For me, it's flicking on HNIC every Saturday night, with a big bowl of popcorn, glass of water/beer(depending on if parents are home), sit on the bed the same way I do every game, with one leg up on the dresser and one on the floor, listiening to Bob Cole and Harry Neale. Then at the first intermission where the dynamic duo of Don Cherry and Donald Mclean. I just can't wait until I'm able to do that again.

John, good idea for a thread :thumb: However I don't miss Bob and Harry and Ron and Don. Somehow I think that CBC needs to revamp HNIC, but they probably won't. I look forward to Chris Cuthbert calling games on TSN.
I do miss Jim Hughson calling games on sportsnet and John Shorthouse and Tom Larschied calling Canuck games on the radio. I usually listen to the games on the radio as I do the dishes and give my son his bath. This year I have listened to Kelowna Rocket broadscasts as I do these activities and while the junior game is fun hockey, and Regan and Roger do call an exciting game, its just not the same. Saturday nights we now rent dvds or catch tapes of CSI or other shows we may have missed during the week for various reasons.

I miss the rivalries the most.

Edmonton/Calgary; Edmonton/Dallas; Edmonton/Vancouver; Ottawa/Toronto; Ottawa/Philadelphia, etc. All those games that you circle on your calendar, because you know it's going to be a great game. And usually someone great or unusual happens and that's what makes hockey exciting. It's the rivalries that the fans love.

Also the playoffs. The first round is usually the best and the other day someone mentioned a couple of last year's series and for the first time in a long time I got the feeling that I want the NHL back - specifically the playoffs.

I miss the excitement, the anticipation, the adrenalin rush.....The words from Peter Mc Nab saying "Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you..when we score a goal...The awesome saves, the scrums along the boards, the blind and biased refs, screaming at the television (even though no one can hear me) The fans in post game regalia white pom poms everywhere....The deafening sound of thunderous fans during the whole post season...The Stanley Cup, The Parade.....Losing my mom at the parade.....I miss it all...This lockout has changed my life and not I think in a good way...Hockey was my outlet, my therapy, my heroin......I am numb....... :violin:

Why do you drink water when your parents are away? :wicked:

I miss coming to forums such as this one and have something relevant to talk about on the game that I love... the well has been running dry for too long.

I miss complaining about the Sedins, Brent Sopel, Marek Malik. I miss shouting at Dan Cloutier, as I throw my shoe at the television. I miss giggling at Marc Crawford when he gets angry. I miss calling Todd Bertuzzi an "idiot" for taking stupid penalties. I miss Jarkko Ruutu talking trash. I miss trashing the Canucks in general, while at the same time, defending them when someone agrees with me.

Agreed. I haven't really missed the NHL that much this year, until April rolled around, when the playoffs usually start. The NHL playoffs are, without a doubt the most exciting playoffs in all of sports. No other sport even comes close IMO.

Also with the rivalries, I miss trash talking with the Flyers fans. As annoying as they can be at times, it's a solid rivalry between two solid franchises, and I do miss it. With the two teams meeting in the playoffs again last year, I was looking forward to the rivalry heating up. It would have been yet another good battle for the Atlantic Division, but now who knows what the two teams will look like when the NHL resumes.

I miss Hockey Night in Canada. Watching TSN doesn't compare to HNIC!

HNIC Definately, just watching a few short clips from last year of the Leafs rushing in versus the sens brings a tear to my eye. ;)

I have been impressed with the OHL talent this year, but the broadcasts, and skill aren't the same as spending Saturday Night in front of the TV.

At this time of year I miss going to the bar and razzing the Sens and Leaf fans because their teams would be on the golf course by now ... ooops they already are. ;)

I haven't really missed it during the regular season because I have enjoyed most of the movies that CBC has put on instead of hockey.

I miss the rivalries the most. Edmonton/Dallas;

There's a one-sided rivalry if ever there was. Edmonton may see a rivalry there, but Dallas sees those games as mere formalities. I really don't disagree with your point, because rivalries do make the game fun to watch.

I don't think it matters what the outcome is to determine a rivalry, just as long as there's the intensity, hatred and excitement for both the fans and players.

I miss the insightful comments from slow, sweaty, short-of-breath players at the beginning of each intermission...

"well... we just gotta keep chipping...away... and give a hundred...and ten percen...."

Oh, and I wonder how that nice Canadian Tire commercial couple is doing these days?

I miss going to the games...the whole atmosphere...the beer, the pregame skate...the cheers/boos from the crowd when a goal is scored...etc., etc. Game day is a good day when you have tickets. It's an event.

Sure I only go to 2 or 3 or 4 games a year..but it's still fun. I like to make the most of it.

Yeah slappy I love those Toronto "Home games" in Edmonchuck!

That's ok, Rusty. There is no denying that the Leaf Nation is strong with supporters but when they start cheering and hollering they are quickly overwhemed by the support of the Oil fans. They Leaf fans, as vocal as they may be, are still a minority in the building.

It's the same when the Habs or Wings come to town. It's not just the Leafs.

It was ironic to hear the Oilers complain about the "Home town" Leaf biased crowd....

Been some time since you've been to Rexall Place, eh Rusty? Maybe you heard too much of the Leaf-bias on HNIC?

I miss the interviews of Bettman. I loved hearing that man speak, but with no hockey no such luck for me. I also miss listening to Goodenow speak his mind about the game of hockey and where it's headed. If these two key figures were not still mentioned all the time in the media, and were not intrigual parts of the game then I don't know what I'd do.

Life goes on, I've adapted.

Rusty has the leaf-goggles on, just let him be.. mea nd him have a date with some rap music later anyway :thumb:

I miss being able to come home and forget about all my problems while watching hockey from 5pm until 11pm. I miss the marathon overtime games that could eat up an entire night. I miss being able to converse about the games with my friends during and after the games. Frankly, I can't think of much I don't miss.

September can't come soon enough.. training camp will be a god send.
