DiPietro signs 15 year deal with Isles
TSN.ca Staff

The New York Islanders will announce today that they have signed goalie Rick DiPietro to a 15-year, $67.5 million contract. The deal will pay DiPietro $4.5 million annually.

Islanders' owner Charles Wang, who was directly involved in the negotiations, had indicated that if DiPietro didn't sign by Friday, when the team opens training camp in Nova Scotia, that DiPietro would not play in the 2006-07 season.

DiPietro, who turns 25 next week, is a restricted free agent who could become unrestricted in two more seasons.

Last season, DiPietro went 30-24-5 with a 3.02 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage.

The deal is believed to be the second longest in NHL history, only topped by the 21-year deal Wayne Gretzky signed with the Edmonton Oilers in 1979. The longest deal in major North American pro sports is the $25-million, 25-year deal Magic Johnson signed with the NBA Lakers in 1981. The Islanders also signed Alexei Yashin to an $87.5 million, 10-year contract in 2001.

''Clubs are free to make their own decsions within the confines laid out in the collective bargaining agreement and other applicable league rules,'' NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Canadian Press. ''Some decisions turn out well, others not so well. Time will tell whether this will be a good decision or a bad one for the Islanders.''

DiPietro is scheduled to receive $4.5 million in each season of the contract. With the value of the deal spread over the length of the contract, DiPietro's salary would rank eighth among NHL goaltenders for the coming season.

Chicago's Nikolai Khabibulin is currently the league's highest-paid goaltender at $6.75 million a year.

New York Newsday reports DiPietro is guaranteed the full $67.5 million if he suffers a career-ending injury, but it's not yet clear what would happen if he were to retire before the deal expires.

Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that the Islanders have also signed center Viktor Kozlov to a one-year deal.

Wow. WTF????

I'd laugh at this, but it's really not funny anymore. It's just sad and pathetic. Charles Wang is a complete embarrasment to the NHL and should immediately be removed as owner of the Islanders.

On the bright side, as long as this complete jackass owns the Islanders, they won't be a threat in the Atlantic Division.:D

And the hits keep on coming for this organization.

Something tells me that this was the main reason Neil Smith is gone, because the dumbass who owns this team thinks that these outrageous deals will... come to think of it, I have no idea what in the hell they're trying to do over there.

Honestly, can anyone explain the logic of a 15 year deal for anyone not named Wayne Gretzky? I mean honestly 15 freakin years? This contract ends in 2022, that's just mind-boggling, think about it, 15 years from now, I'll be turning 38 when this contract is over.

And now DiPietro has no reason to play for anything, I mean he's got all the money he'll ever need, all he has to do is show up to work for the next 15 years regardless of his job performance and he still gets paid.

Can someone please pinch me, because I gotta be dreaming, there is no way anyone in their right mind would do something as stupid as this.

Such a contract is ridiculous in the best of time, but for DiPietro??? Brodeur or Roy in their younger years would be nuts, but DiPietro? That's simply insane! Charles Wang fired a proven GM in Smith and pulls that stunt! An idiot at the helm. If I'm a player in Long Island, I'm requesting a trade right now before the place blows-up!

This deal is just nuts. 15 Years:eek: Any previous long term deal has been a publicity stunt, or has blown up in the face of the team that signed it, so will this one.

Hell, If I'm a player on the Island, I'm making best friends with Charles Wang, and hoping to get half of what DiPietro got :thumb:

They are NUTS! That team is the funny farm, they are a bad version of the Osbournes, omigod, I cant even come up with words for them. That owner is the most hockey braindead owner in the history of the sport, even though there have been some other doozies. Garth Snow probably had some impact in this ridiculous ridiculous decision too, since he is Ricky's pal!

I have heard some(Kyprios) defend the deal. Cost certainity, commitment to a player, a potential all star and so on. Even if you buy that arguement, then a 5 to 7 year deal maybe at $5 million, but the numbers in Wang's deal are just stupid. How did this guy make his money in the first place?

The Isles signed up Mike Dunham to be DiPietro's backup.

Only a one year deal for Dunham... I would've expected at least 6 or 7 from this (mis)management team. But at least they have a backup goalie, was thinking that Snow might've had to pull a duel role this season.

I heard of player-coachs but player-GM? Not since Eddie Shore in the minors in the 30's IIRC. Anyways I thought Wang was scouting Sumo Wrestlers in Japan for goal tenders:wicked:

Stupid, senseless, irresponsible, out to lunch, and 20 other synonyms of stupid.

Seriously, this has to be the most moronic thing since Booby Clarke offered Ryan Kesler a boatload of money. What is Wang's stupidity going to do to future negotations with other goalies throughout the NHL?

well it looks like the isles don't have to worry about getting a goalie for a little while

If DiPietro keeps taking concussions then they have a Brett Lindros situation on thier hands where a player is forced to retire.

They gotta keep this kid in the crease where he belongs... he's too expensive for running around like a fool. They should put him on a retraction leash to prevent him from sudden blue line scrambles for loose pucks and collisions with forwards coming the other way.

Once Nolan seems him going he just hits the swithc and... *zap* Dipietro gets yanked back to the net.

as a manager i would never offer a 15 year contract and if i were DiPietro I would have asked for 70mil it just makes more sense

Whats wrong with the NYI who do they think this guy is to offer him a 15 year contract
