View Full Version : Sykora an Oiler, pending physical

Not a bad move, depending on what he gets.
I've heard between 2.3 and 3.0, with 2.5 being the main number mentioned, though 2.3M is from a fairly reliable source.
2.5MM for a one year deal on Sykora would be a perfect move for this team. Here's hoping that Mihknov comes over and Lupul is converted to a LW.
Smyth - Horcoff - Sykora
Lupul - Pouliot - Hemsky
Torres - Reasoner - Pisani
Moreau - Stoll - Mihknov
300 goals just might be possible, and is going to end up being necessary if we want to make the playoffs.
There's going to be a lot of fun hockey in Edmonton this year :]
Finally some good news.
Smyth - Horcoff - Sykora
Lupul - Pouliot - Hemsky
Torres - Reasoner - Pisani
Moreau - Stoll - Mihknov
:eek:If that's the lineup that is on the ice for Banner Night on October 5th, I'm happy. It looks better than what was out there a year ago. Still I question the defence, but the team has a much better goaltending situation than last year. Here's hoping for Mihknov is next.
Okay, this looks good.

Now the girls over at Hot-Oil just need to give him that makeover (http://hot-oil.blogspot.com/2006/08/will-this-man-get-hot-oil-treatment-he.html).
For some reason I don't think he can wear 17 ;)

Replacement for Samsonov?
Seriously, good signing by the Oilers. Sykora has some good hands and Edmonton needed a good news after the blows they've been handled since the end of the playoffs run.

Apparently Mihknov is going to be the replacement.
Either way, Sykora is versataile (although, most seem to say he's MUCH better on the RW?) and adds some depth and hopefully a bit more grit and defense than Samsonov.
My hopes for him are to be about a 30-30 guy who can play some reliable minutes. He hit a LOT of posts last year... 15. Just a ridiculous number. If half of those are a half inch to the side, he's suddenly a 30-28 guy last season, so I don't think it's that far fetched.
He's also money in the shootout. And signing him for one year is perfect, as this is a transitional year for a lot of players (should be the last year before Hemsky is a true impact player, and is going to be the transitional year for Torres, Stoll and Lupul from young rooks to reliable players).
That, and I don't think anyone can frustrate me as much as Samsonov did ;)

Stoll REALLY pissed you off didn't he? :D
Mihknov looked about the size of Bertuzzi in the clip of him that was posted. If he can fit in it would be a most definite upgrade from ol' Georges.
If Hemksy and Lupul have 70+ pts seasons, regardless of who their center is, it will give the Oil a great 1-2 punch. It should come in handy against Fernandez, Kiprusoff and Luongo.
Expecting Sykora to be a 30-30 guy might be a bit of a stretch but that's the beauty of this time of year... we can all have our own expectations and there is no right or wrong. :thumb:
The reason why I don't think he'll do quite as well as last year is because he won't have Jagr on his line and on the PP with him. Still, he'll be a solid veteran and he certainly will help the Oilers.
BTW, I think it's the first time I ever hear "grit" and "Sykora" mentioned together! :D

Actually it does keep the Northwest interesting.

You said it Johny.
For teams like the Oilers, it's a damn, damn shame the Leafs won the 'Hal Gill Sweepstakes'.

for less then 1 mill more you could have tried to get shanny.
im glad sather passed on him at his 3.1 million. i was really hoping for more when the rangers got him last season. he scored some but still below his career average and playing at times with jagr you would think more production. he will help the oilers out on the shootout thats for sure. just too many times last season he was missing the net or not getting very good shots on goal.
If it was for 2 mill per season then i would say ok lets resign him. but now i look at the 4 mill shanny signing by the rangers as a bargin compared to what sykora has recieved with 3.1 mill.
anyway good luck to sykora and the oilers. oilers still have a place in my heart for beating the islanders for there first cup ever what a sweet feeling i had going to school that first day after they won bashing those islanders fans.

Without a Jagr, Elias, or Kariya on the ice, Sykora's highest goal total is 23, so I don't know how that'll translate over to the Oilers. I'm thinking somewhere in the 25-30 range, assuming he's healthy all year. Funny you should mention the "grit" factor, because I've always thought of him as a rather soft player. If you can get in his face and hit him, he's not nearly as effective. So in other words, don't expect him to score much against Calgary.:D
That being said, I'd take him over Samsonov, who he's basically replacing. Sykora can either be really good, or disappear entirely, so we'll see what happens.

All I said was that he had more grit than Samsonov.
That's not saying a whole lot :D
How is he definsively MD? I've heard a lot of mixed stories. My impression would be that he generally has the puck (or his line does) so his defense is good similar to a Ryan Smyth type? If the pucks in their end, they can't score and such :D

I see what you're saying there.
As for Sykora's defense, he was drafted and developed by the Devils, so he's not a complete liability in his own end. He won't win any Selke's, but he's responsible enough that you don't have to worry about him cherry picking at the blueline instead of backchecking. Sykora played in defensive systems in both New Jersey and Anaheim if that tells you anything.
Basically, if the Oilers get the Sykora of 3-4 years ago, they'll have another scoring threat capable of 30-35 goals. If they get the Sykora of the last couple years, they still get a 25 goal guy who isn't a liability. If it wasn't for the cap issues the Devils are in, I'd have liked to see him back there.:slant:

For a cheaper price and a shorter duration. I like the move quite a bit, even if it's about 100K higher than what I thought it'd be.
Also love that Sykora can play all 3 forward positions, though I've heard he's a much different player on the right side.
It's $2,900,000.
Great move by Lowe.

Not bad
Sykora will help the PP, and bring atleast 25 goals
The question is..what version will you receive?

ANYTHING will be better than the failed Adam Oates experiment from a couple of seasons ago.

Haha, thanks.
You know when I was making that jersey, I had though an Oiler on the roster already had that number and was thinking Torres for some foggy reason. A quick roster check showed no 17, so I preceded. I should have known better. :coffee:
