Noronen is going to play in Russia this season:http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=173282&hubname=nhl

Geez, can't you guy's ever catch a break?
You finally solve your starting problems and you lose your back-up!
Well Phoenix has 4 goalies. What about bringing MiMo back to the NW division? He might even be extra good against the Oil.
Sad to see Noronen go but this gives Wade Flaherty the chance he deserves to be with the Canucks.
Cheers

the only good I see in this right now, is that the Canucks retain Noronen's North American rights for the season, and those could be useful at trade time especailly if he plays well in Russia. But that is a stretch on my part, being a glass is half full type of person.

I could only wish they call the rangers and ask for Kevin Weekes. he doesnt have the mental toughness to play on a consistint good basis in n.y. mainly cause of the fans always booing him. a change is needed to bring out the best in weekes. he could be a solid back up for your team.
He did have a few soild games for us last season. he just has to put it all together. he clearly has the talent to do so but like i said it wont be with the rangers.
Can't say that I blame Noronen... very few goalies with any ambition would want to be the back-up to Luongo or Brodeur. :o
Still, I don't think the Canucks should be in any panic to find a back-up to Luongo. Wade Flaherty is more than capable to fill that role and IF something ever happened to Luongo (long term injury), then they can look into improving. What's the point in tying up a bunch of cap money "just in case"?

True enough. What is Van's back-up going to play anyway 10-15 games?
Flaherty was a wall in the AHL wasn't he?
A vet like him should be perfect. He would understand his role and not be rocking the boat wanting more playing time, like any young ambitious goalie would.

Yeah, Flaherty has played very well for the Moose. But, thats the AHL..
I'm not so sure. What if Luongo went down? Flaherty would be the No.1
Its rumoured that Steve Shields wants the job..but again..not so sure about his play. He has really slipped since leaving San Jose
I'd really like Hedberg. This guy is a quality backup, great in the dressing room, and can also be a temporary starter
Prusek, Hurme, or Divis would be good options..but all have signed in europe..not sure on the outclauses
Too bad Ahonen signed in Europe as well, the Devils could have shipped him and Lukowich to Vancouver for somebody like Kesler.:D

I really like the idea of Lukowich..for depth

I don't see Steve Sheilds or any of the other backups available as an upgrade. True that Flaherty played well in the AHL, but he's a cheap short term solution. If something was to happen to Luongo mid-long term, there are teams out there with quality goalies with whom the Canucks could trade for... Biron, Giguere, Aebischer, Toskala or Nabokov, just to name a few could all be options since if Luongo was gone for any lenght of time, his salary wouldn't count against the cap anyway... again, why tie cap space for someone who would be playing 5-10-15 games in the entire season?

VERNON -- In all likelihood, the goalie who will back up Roberto Luongo this year isn't even here at Canucks training camp.
The Canucks are saying all the right things this weekend about 38-year-old Wade Flaherty's chances of making the team but all indications are the Canucks want him in Manitoba.
Flaherty is committed to battle in camp for the job and he will be ready if called upon. But he also understands he remains a long shot to make the NHL.
He is a fall-back plan if the team can't find the goalie they want on the waiver wire later this month.
"There's no question, I can't get comfortable," Flaherty said at training camp, even after head coach Alain Vigneault told reporters Flaherty had a real shot at winning the No. 2 spot.
"They have options and I am sure they are going to look at those options.
"I can't say, 'Oh well, they don't have anyone else in so it's mine.' Not even with Alain saying that [Saturday]. That doesn't mean anything to me."
The Canucks have practised a great deal of patience in waiting for just the right opportunity to nab the ideal backup.
They want a player who can give the organization more top-level depth. A player who can come in ready to start 15 to 20 games.
Vancouver is fairly certain a desirable candidate will become available on the waiver wire when other NHL teams start making cuts.
There are several candidates who have been on the Canucks radar.
"There should be some quality guys [on the waiver wire list], there really should be," GM Canucks Dave Nonis said. "But you never really know who's going to be available. There could be injuries. Some guys could play really well and play their way on teams.
"But overall, I think you'll see some interesting guys move on the waiver wire."
Nonis made it clear he is ready and willing to go with Flaherty if he can't find an improvement. But he has also made a short list of potential wire casualties.
A look around the NHL reveals situations where teams will have to expose intriguing goalies because they have three, or even four goalies in camp.
It's the same way the Canucks lost Brent Johnson, their third goalie, at the beginning of last season.
The Phoenix Coyotes have veteran Curtis Joseph atop the team's depth chart, meaning Mike Morrison will be fighting for a backup spot with Phil Sauve and Nanaimo's David LeNeveu. The loser of the battle will certainly draw a look from the Canucks, especially if it's somehow the 23-year-old LeNeveu.
Florida goalie Craig Anderson knows the waiver wire better than most. He was claimed three times last year -- by Chicago, Boston and St. Louis. It could happen again as Florida already has Ed Belfour and Alex Auld on its roster.

CRAIG ANDERSON
Florida
The Skinny: A solid 25-year-old goalie who the Canucks will have to take a long look at if, as expected, he's put on waivers.
MIKAEL TELLQVIST
Toronto
The skinny: The Leafs seem determined not to lose him without getting something back. They may not have a choice. The Canucks like him.
JASON LABARBERA
Los Angeles
The skinny: With Dan Cloutier and Mathieu Garon, three's a crowd in L.A. Labarbera has a solid relationship with Canucks goalie coach Ian Clark.
BRENT KRAHN
Calgary
The skinny: Wasn't thrilled to see Jamie McLennan back in the Flames' fold, but he will give McLennan a run for his money for the backup job.
DAVID LENEVEU
Phoenix
The skinny: At 23 and with a lot of upside he's a long shot to be exposed. But if he is, the Canucks likely wouldn't hesitate to claim him.
DANY SABOURIN
Pittsburgh
The skinny: The AHL goalie of the year may be ready to get a shot at the NHL.

Interesting read..but the writers list is far from encouraging
Labarbera would be alright. Also, Anderson isn't terrible..and could play 15-20 games
I think Nonis should pay attention to St.Louis. They have Legace, Sanford, and Bacashihua
I wouldn't mind Sanford..

Labarbera is a Prince George boy, might be nice to see him back in BC. Crawford will use Cloutier in LA till he is injured again.
Labarbera is a legit starter in the NHL, but Crow's a moron.
Levenue is untouchable.

So now Albertans are making sense. Odd, very odd.
Labarbarbarbera or Tellqvist would be okay backups wouldn't ya think. What do Leafers have to say about Tellqvist as a backup?

I wouldn't say he's a legit starter
Sure, he had a great start to last season..but like the Kings..he faded down the stretch
The Kings now have Cloutier, and Garon(who will make an excellent backup, or very good alternate)
So, Labarbera is probably the odd man out

Well you can forget about Telly. If you want Aubin, he's there for the taking. A 4th round pick shall be sufficient lol.

You are giving a 4th rounder to take Aubin off your hands, boy you are generous! ;)

Wasn't Aubin the only positive in goal for the Leafs last year?
