View Full Version : NHL Fantasy Sim Playoff
Some of you may remember that I tried an NHL Fantasy Playoff over at HF last year, but wasn't able to finish it. I'm thinking of trying the same thing over here this year (and have the resources to do it), and was wondering if anybody would be interested in it.
Here's what I'm planning on trying. We would hold a live draft of sorts here in a thread, with a time limit between picks. Each player would draft 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goalies. Once the draft is complete, I'm planning on putting the teams together in NHL 07, and then simming a playoff with those teams. Ideally, 8 or 16 teams would be best, as it would be like the playoffs.
The simming wouldn't happen until NHL 07 comes out, but we could hold the draft about a week or so before it comes out, and then have a short trade period before the simming. I don't quite have everything figured out yet, but I thought I'd see what the interest level would be around here.

I could do it with NHL 06, but there aren't really any set ratings for rookies like Ovechkin, Crosby, Phaneuf, etc. If we wait until 07 comes out, their ratings should be up to date, so we'll all know what their ratings are. And in case anybody is wondering, I'll be using the PS2 version, because my computer is a slow, out of date piece of crap.

Ya I understand.
The big hockey pool I go into should be opening any day now. Yahoo will be soon too, I guess. I'm just Jonesin'.

So we've got 4 people interested so far. If we could get 4 more people, I can start getting this thing organized. I don't know if you want to hold the draft before NHL 07 comes out, and then wait with the simming, or just wait until the game comes out before starting anything. I've added a list of those involved so far, and will keep it updated if more join, or somebody wants to drop out.
Put me down as interested. I remember doing the other one at HF.
I'm just not too sure if I'll be around for the drafting, athough I should be. I'll let you know either way.

Well there is the two where I got the scoring system and player values from, for the pool I posted.
One is free to join, gives one free trade per week, plus up to another 120 trades can be purchased for $0.25 each.
The other one that uses the sames player values and scoring, is a very expensive undertaking. Same 20 players with a $60 million cap but it costs US$34.95 per team if you enter by Sept 3, and US$39.95 after. You get a bench as well, but unless you are very, very lucky it will easily cost you 100-150 bucks American to even try to win your league. Closer to US$500 if you want to chase the grand prize. Here's where they get you:
Costs
To modify your team during the Contest, there are additional fees, as follows:
Bench Switch (unlimited)
Tuesday - .................Sunday by 9 PM CT $2.00 each
Sunday after 9 PM CT - Monday 5:30 PM CT $2.50 each
New Player Purchase (limit 12) ...................$5.00 each
It get 's way too expensive. It damn near broke me when the Loonie was only worth $0.54 American.
There is a third one offered from the same company. It is a checkbox style pool. It is the one to join imo. My buddy was 2nd overall in '04,(he would have won it all if he had taken my suggestion to put Luongo in for the last 2 months of the season) and I got a team into the top 30 overall and won a month last year. Overall I beat our old friend Yoata on the last day of the season. I told him in November I would catch him. :wicked:
Anyway, the check box pool costs US$29.95 for one team or buy two get one free. You get 20 free trades to use throughout the season. The scoring system is the same as the other two and the one I posted.
This place also has other pools, for almost any sport. I just didn't know if it violated the no ads rule, to post a link.
But if Mel's cool with it, and you're still interested, go ahead and make the GDT, and I'll gladly provide the info.
Edit: I'm actually pretty sure some if not most of you will know of the company.

Haha It's about all the gambling I do, so it's not as bad as it sounds. They do try to sucker you into the real expensive one with 5 prizes in each 25 team league. I won't playing it again.
Yahoo seems to be a good choice as far the totally free ones go. The baseball pool runs well, if it is any indication. It is the first yahoo Fantasy League I've entered, so I don't know how the hockey is run.
P.S.
Maybe a Mod could move this little side discussion to it's own thread? Appologies to MadDevil for the highjacking. My Bad.

We still have two open spots, but I thought I'd give you all an idea of what I have in mind for this thing.
- Each team would consist of 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goaltenders.
- Live draft, most likely starting on a Friday or Saturday.
- 8 hour time limit between picks.
- If picks are not made on time, the draft moves on to the next person.
- Missed picks can be made at any time before that person's next pick, if the pick is not made before that person's next pick, the pick will be moved to the end of the draft.
- Once the draft is complete, there will be a brief 48 hour trade period in which trades can be made between any two people.
- After the trade period expires, participants post their lineups.
- Lineups can be edited at any time prior to the game being simmed (I will come up with some kind of schedule on the simming so you know when that is).
- Series format is best-of-7.
- Last team standing wins.
If anybody has any other ideas, or would like to change some of what I've posted above, feel free to do so. I'm thinking of holding the draft at the end of the month sometime, most likely on a weekend.
For anybody not able to make the draft, you can send me a PM with roughly the top 180 players you're interested in, ranked according to your amount of interest in them. With 20 players per team, 8 teams, that's 160 players.
I would jump in... but I know I wouldn't have time to wait on a live draft with 8 hours between picks.
If we could pick a time and do it in the live chat room in real time, I might be able to join it.

That would be an even better idea, if we could all be here at the same time. I was thinking of holding the draft either the last weekend this month, or the first weekend in September, unless everybody wants to wait for NHL 07 to come out to get an idea of player ratings.

If we go for a live draft let's shoot for getting it done this month, because when September rolls around, who's going to want to be drafting on a weekend when the NFL and college football is back? ;)

Good point. How about August 26th at say 3 PM ET? I think that'll give most of us a chance to shake off any after effects from drinking heavily the Friday before, and we can finish it on Sunday if we don't get it all done on Saturday.

I won't be there for a lot of it, possibly all of it, if that's the date and time.

The date and time is negotiable, I was just throwing that out as a possibility. It's probably going to be hard to find a time where everybody will be available.
26th is fine by me, I already have 1 draft that day anyway.

Anytime is fine.
Well, I'm going to make a command decision on the draft. It will be on Saturday, August 26th, starting at 3 PM ET in the chat room. Anybody not able to make the draft can either send me a PM with players ranked according to interest (we'll be drafting 160 players, so it might be a long list), or you can drop out if you won't be able to make it. We currently have 7 people interested, so hopefully somebody else will jump in between now and the draft.

I'm good to go.
We've got less than a week to go, and I just want to double check to see how many people will be participating in it for sure. If you're no longer interested, please let me know. We've got 7 right now, so I'd like to get an idea of how many will be participating in case we need more than 1 more participant.
Something else I'm going to throw out there, I'm thinking of holding a trade period after the draft is through, unless everybody just wants to go with the rosters they draft. Thoughts?

I'm going to put your teams together as custom teams and then sim the games between them. It's not really a playoff per se, since I don't think it's possible to just sim an 8 team playoff with NHL 07.
Unfortunately, I'll have to push the draft back a couple hours. I have to help my cousin move some furniture into the house he'll be living in. So the draft will be at 5 EST, rather than 3 EST. Sorry for any inconvenience.:o
