Tsn and espn reported the rangers and brendan shanahan have agreed on a 1 year contract worth a reported 4 million. i love this move alot we add another player even at 37 years of age will add leadership qualitys to some of the younger guys. he scored over 40 goals last season has won numerous cups.

for one season its a no brainer. got to hand it to slats on these 1-2 years deals while he waits for the farm system to be ready. this signing doesnt hurt the chemestry of the rebuilding stages at all. if any it helps them like i stated above as it will just add leadership to the rest of the squad.

sathers grade for offseason moves is a B+ (would be an A+ but weekes is still with us)

Brendan Shanahan has accepted a one-year, $4 million contract offer with the New York Rangers, The New York Post reported Sunday.

The newspaper reported Shanahan, a three-time Stanley Cup winner in Detroit, spurned richer offers from the Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. The signing was expected to be formally announced on Sunday, the Post reported.

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent forward Brendan Shanahan.

"We are thrilled to welcome Brendan and his family to the Rangers," said Sather. "He continues to perform at an elite level and also brings outstanding leadership qualities to our organization. Brendan will be a tremendous player and person for our young players to learn from."

Shanahan registered 40 goals and 41 assists for 81 points, along with 105 penalty minutes and a plus-29 rating while skating in 82 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season. His 40 goals led the club and tied for 10th in the league, while his 81 points (24th in NHL) ranked third on the Wings.

You know I actually think either Sather has gotten smarter with the salary cap or the leadership of MSG has stopped paying attention and is letting him do his job. Now if they would just fire Isiah Thomas and get somebody who knows what he is doing to rebuild the Knicks.

You know something KB i dispiesed sather so much in the past for all the free spending he did but have come to relize any gm with a free spending budget would have done the same thing.

looking back on his oilers glory he built teams through good drafting and limited budgets. kind of the way he is doing it now with these 1-2 year deals just keeping the team competetive without disturbing the rebuilding process of trading away some of there great talent in there farm system.

Looking at cablevision they still dont care about money looking at how larry browns contract and firing was handled and the possibility there gona have to fork over the 40 million owed to him.

But anyway i like this cap now in hockey the looks of teams will be different each year and only the teams with smart GM's will go on and have success. and my rangers are finnally starting to look like one of the smarter teams for a change. :thumb:

I love it. Shanahan is not the wave of the future but this guy can still play.

last season:

82 games played
40 goals
41 assists
105 PIM
+25

More depth up front, and most importantly a great character guy who is respected around the league. He brings instant credibility to a team on the rise. And immediate offensive threat that is not named Jagr.

5 PIMPS

krypt do you think the Rangers will place a "C" on Shanny?

He's obviously captain material, but would that upset the team's chemistry?

(for those unaware, the Rangers went captainless last season with Jagr, Kaspar and Rucchin all wearing "A")

Giving the C to a guy for one year doesn't make much sense to me unless it's an Yzerman coming to your team.

Pretty good signing by the Rags. Shanny was apparently offered the same deal by Detroit and chose to sign in NY.

That PP in NY is going to be downright scary.

i sure do think this will be the case. he has 3 cups won 2 more goals for 600. he is a leader in my book. jagr clearly stated he doesnt wana be a captain. and europeans lets face it havent made the best captains in the NHL. shanahan is a clear favorite for the C.

the garden is gona love this guy regardless of age. he is a freak of nature still putting up numbers like this.

i see him on prucha's line. and wait till prucha gets knocked down. someone will be eating shanahan's sherwood for sure. :thumb:

1 year deals well your going to be seeing alot of these in todays NHL. im sure if shanahan puts up the numbers he will be back for another year. see sather is using his brain now not to get locked up in long term deals now that the farm sysytem has been set in place with players that will soon play for the rangers in every aspect of the game they need them for. what it will come down too is who is ready to make the club in deciding what contracts to extend or players to sign in the future. it all makes sense to me.

Thats the main worry i had with prucha he has a ton of potential but he is lacking in size. lets hope the jagr workout does well for him. 3 hours a day in the gym will sure add the 20 pounds of muscle he needs. other then that having a player like shanahan with prucha will let other teams know what there gona deal with if they take the liberty of knocking prucha around.

i just hope renney see's it this way.

Shanny is exactly what NYR(and half the league) needs. If Jagr, Shanny, Lundqvist and Prucha all maintain the level of play they showed last season the Rags could be on their way to winning the Atlantic division. Good signing.

Maybe Shanny got tired of losing in DET in the past couple of years in the playoffs.

To be honest, I'm surprised (and happy) he chose New York. For the most part, no established veterans wanted to come here, some of those who did, did not wish to stay. It felt like more of the same when none of the big defensive names chose the Rangers on July 1st weekend....

But Shanny choosing the Rangers instead of staying comfortable in Detroit, or securing his future elsewhere with some long-term deal at age 37 (of which he reportedly turned down several). Man I am kind of speechless.

He is here because he was impressed by what he saw last season and wants to build on that. That's what he said. And he's here for shorter term and less money than he could have had somewhere else.... to me that speaks volumes.

And it's not something we're used to in Rangerland, veterans landing here for the biggest contracts they could get? - yeah we've seen enough of that - but this acquisition has a totally different feel to it than we've come to expect. And it's such a relief.

for got to mention also... there is some rumbling that Shanny was on the opposite end of some hard feelings in Detroit, namely from the league's biggest piece of crap in my opinion - Chris Chelios.

Hard feelings about the Shanny's role in the collective bargaining agreement.

Total internet hearsay - could be nothing to it, but figured I'd share anyway.

now why doesn't this surprise me.

While Shanahan was working to improve the game, Chelios played in the UHL.

Good signing though I think they paid a bit too much but it seems to be the trend these days so whatever.

I disagree about paying too much. They can afford 4 mill easily in their cap room, thanks in part to not paying too much to any single free agent. (Even if Sather wanted to originally)

If you look at the numbers Shanny is still putting up - the leader and competitor that he is - his playoff experience (sorely lacking on last season's roster) - and the fact he's only on the payroll for 1 year?... it's a phenomenal deal - a no brainer.

He is precisely what the Rangers needed last year, on the ice, on the power play, on the bench, and in the room.

He makes the Rangers a whole different team in the eyes of opponents that have to meet them 8 times a year.

On-ice contributions aside... guys like Prucha, Tyutin, Ortemeyer, Betts, Staal (if he makes it) - they will benefit so much just from being around the likes of Brendan Shanahan. That alone is huge - as you know if you followed this team last season.

The addition of 2 ex-Canes fresh off a cup win should not be underestimated either. This will not be a cinderella team next year I promise you. If Renney can steer the ship the same way and Lundqvist overcomes sophomore slumps... watch out.

Shanny fits in the cap, and it's only for one year... you really can't go wrong. Worst case it doesn't work out you say goodbye. Best case - you sign him again next season.

The Rangers are looking for Shanahan, ranked first among active NHL players with 598 career goals, to lead both on and off the ice. The chance to be an example for others in the locker room is a role the 18-year NHL veteran embraces.

"Aside from what I do on the ice, I thought that I could add to this team," he said. "I owe a lot of veteran players my career -- guys who helped me when I was 18, 19, and 20, when I got off track. They nudged me back on. My first job is to come out on the ice and perform to my ability with what I do and what I bring to a team. I know myself as a hockey player, and I know what I bring. I am physical, make players accountable, and stick up for teammates.

"I don’t go out there running around looking for trouble, but I try to take care of the players on the ice, and I like to think that over the years I have produced big goals and scored game-winning goals. Those are things I have always prided myself in. That's first and foremost. If you don't feel good about yourself as a player, it's tough to be a leader."

Shanahan also said the team's recent signings of two Stanley Cup winners played a role in his decision.

"I think signing Aaron Ward and Matt Cullen sent a great message to the core group of players," said Shanahan, himself a three-time Cup champion. "It’s a reminder of what the ultimate goal is when you sign guys like Ward and Cullen that have just come off the ultimate high. Some might think it makes you complacent, but I think it makes you hungrier. You have tasted it. You just want to be out there and can't stand to be out of it. You feel like you have ownership to it and that it belongs to you. I think those signings really help."

On Wednesday, Shanahan took time to try on his new No. 14 Rangers jersey as he looked forward to an opportunity that was simply too attractive for him to pass up.

"I really have my eye on delivering on the ice and doing what I can to make the team better, even ultimately having an impact on some of the younger players," said Shanahan. "But I also need to make sure I have an impact on the ice myself. I had an impact on the ice last season, so there is no reason to think that I won't be able to do that in New York."

People will always say the Rangers spend to much. Even if thats not the case remember its N.Y.C. just the way people think of our sports teams.

sure the rangers over spent in the past and never performed like they were paid for. but this team is alot different now. it has players who play with hunger now not like before were they only cared about collecting a pay check. and sure it takes some luck with players drafted you dont know if will pan out. yes the rangers are getting lucky with a few of them and it looks even more promising in the future. signing shanny like mel and i brought up think it is great for the development of the rangers future even if he is here for one season. but dont doubt yourselves shanny will be great for the rangers and i for one think he will get another year after next season.

if you take a look at many championship teams over the last 10 years in all sports its safe to say that just about all them had a core of there own players drafted surrounded by role players signed as free agents or by trade.

It takes money to make money and it takes money to build a winner. and thats what NYC is supposed to be all about. :thumb:
