Holy Snappin Crap, trade within the confrence, At least he is out of the divison. But with Pronger and Niedermeyer as #1 and 1A defencemen, Burke must have pictures of Lowe or something.

I just herd it on the tub and I didn't even think of that
Still no return news? They're saying just draft picks but I can't believe that? At least Perry or someone must be going the other way?

Oh boy... this to me sounds like the Ducks are going to be a force next year with both Pronger and Niedermayer on the back end. The Oilers getting back Lupol...just doesn't seem like a lot compared to what they gave up, but I guess it was one of those in a bind sort of things and they had to do something, but I am glad Pronger stayed in the West.
Sportsnet sources say the Edmonton Oilers will receive forward Joffrey Lupul, prospect Ladislav Smid and a conditional draft pick in exchange for the defenceman.
I never liked Smid much at all to be honest. And even if he pans out, he's no Pronger. The pick is conditional. If it does indeed go to Edmonton it's a nice bonus if it is in the early rounds but the Ducks are a much better team now with Pronger and Niedermayer on defense and already were of playoff calibre. So the pick won't be that high.
Some nice assets going to Edmonton. But as I expected, I don't think Oiler fans will be completely satisfied. Unless you're a big Smid fan I guess.
I really like Lupul. He's an Edmonton boy too. I think he's an RFA, so he'll need a new contract.
TSN reports Pronger is going to Anaheim for a bigger package:
- Lupul
- Smid
- 1st round pick 2007
- 2nd round pick 2007
- Conditional 1st round pick 2008 (If Anaheim goes to final. Not too likely IMO, and then there's a 50/50 chance of them winning the Cup and making that pick #30)
That's better for Edmonton, but still not that great. The Ducks have a crazy blueline now. Thankfully they're out West. I don't know what the Oil plan on doing with the D this season though, since I'm not somebody who's all that high on Smid (though maybe Ottawa getting Meszaros 23rd that year with Smid going 9th overall is what turned me off). There's not that many FA's left on the blueline to sign either.

Lupols grandfather is in the ownership group.
Not a bad deal for Edm but a great one for Anaheim! This trade needed to happen 2 days ago so the Oil could have spent money on free agent defencemen.I still think they should have gotten Boumeester,Horton and draft picks from Florida.
Cheers

Yeah, I would have gone for the Florida deal..
Lupul is a very good young player..and will be even better
But, I think Lowe could have gotten more..
What a useless condition on the first round pick.
Sigh.
We just dropped aorund $5,000,000 in salary, and given what's left on the FA market I don't really want to use any of it anyway.

I agree with TT and Hack. That Florida deal looked pretty sweet compared to this one.
I'm quite surprised by this. Pleasantly surprised.

I think Edmonton fans were expecting too much for Pronger. Think about it, Edmonton got an absolutely huge return here. I think its a great deal for the Oil. They drop 5 mil on the cap, they get a budding star in Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Smid is a blue chip defensive prospect, a first round pick and a conditional(unlikely) other first round pick. With a second rounder slapped on top of it. This deal won't be great for the team for next season, but in the future people will look back at this trade and say, "Edmonton raped Anaheim in that one".

Anyone who actually believed that rumor should slap themselves.
The first round pick is conditional on Anaheim reaching the finals.
I think what pisses me off more than anything is that I don't see a "WC Tax" here.

Good luck to any team depending on their top line to win against the Ducks now...

Probably because of the tight budget that the Nucks had him on. Now he's got some extra cash from the Anaheim owners and he's putting it to very good use. I think this deal makes the Ducks the early favorite coming out of the west, here is a team who made it all the way to the WCF and now with this deal giving up only one roster player and getting a great defencemen in Pronger, they have to be right up there.

The Pacific and the Northwest should be interesting, the Central well:shrug:
All the teams have made moves and some noise except for Chicago (well lalime:rolleyes: ). I am thinking that Colorado is a team on the decline, Columbus can score but can they stop?, St.Louis who knows, can Nashville show last year was not a fluke, can Detroit fool people again or will age catch up, LA and the Wild have retooled, Edmonton will have to use the work ethic again, Calgary can defend but will they score, can Vancouver over come the cap problems and find some right-wing scoring,Dallas who knows and is Turco out? San Jose won't surprise anyone but they will entertain. Somebody care to comment on the retooled east?

Toronto and Boston have made some moves, but indeed the West has been the more exciting conference to watch this summer.
But it wasn't the East needing to retrool. Last season, the West was probably the worst it's been in years in terms of the "contending" clubs even being that good.

And let's not forget an Eastern team has now hoisted the cup for 3 straight seasons... it's about time you Westerners started improving your teams and giving the East a decent challenge. And don't give me this we took you to 7 games each time because that just goes to show that the West just didn't have that killer instinct :wicked:
Just imagine if the Ducks play Pronger and Niedermayer on separate defense pairs. They could have a Norris winning defenseman on the ice for the entire game.:eyebug:
I think the Oilers got about all they were going to get in return. While Pronger is clearly a great player, the Oilers asking price was pretty high for any team to meet. The Ducks have some excellent young talent in their system, so parting with Lupul, Smid, and some picks for a guy like Pronger isn't as big of a deal as it might have been someplace else.
Looks like Brian Burke is well on his way to turning the Ducks franchise around.
