I think it's safe to say the New Jersey Devils are in Salary Cap Hell right now.

Here's what they have committed in payroll to next season:

Brodeur - 5.2
Clemmensen - UFA (I think)
Doyle - 450,000

Rafalski - 4.2
Matvichuk - 1.368
Lukowich - 1
Greene - 850,000
White - RFA
Martin - RFA
Hale - RFA

Elias - 6
Madden - 3.893
Langenbrunner - 2.8
Brylin - 1.52
Wiemer - 950,000
Pandolfo - 836,000
Marshall - 760,000
Parise - 703,000
Tallackson - 510,000
Ryznar - 485,000
Janssen - 450,000
Gomez - RFA
Gionta - RFA
Rasmussen - UFA (most likely gone)

Malakhov - 3.6
Mogilny - 3.5
McGillis - 2.2

Total Committed: $39,075,000 (not including McGillis, I'm not sure if his counts or not being as he's in the minors and is not over 35).

So that's roughly $39 million without whatever Gomez, Gionta, White, Martin, and Hale will make. Assuming Gomez gets around $4 million, Gionta $2.5 million, White $3 million (which is what he'll make according to the NHLPA's website), Martin $1 million, and Hale $750,000 (just rough estimates), the Devils payroll would sit at roughly $50 million.:eyebug:

Those numbers might either be a couple million high or low, but assuming that's roughly correct, the Devils will have to dump at least $6-7 million before the season.:(

I think I may be doing some heavy drinking this offseason...

As I have said before Lou was on the NHL's negotiating team for the CBA and he has some influence on the competion committee(so I believe) why he made some of the moves he made still stymies me. That said he has kept some important cogs in the Devil's machine.

I said this in the leaf forum, but just so the Devil faithful can see my proposal:

To Leafs: Brian Gionta
To Devils: Colaiocovo, Williams, 1st round draft pick.

Leafs get their winger.

Devils get a blue chipper in Coli who is able to step in now and be a top 6 defencemen, and a promising winger in Williams. They also get a 1st round draft pick in the next draft. The Devils also do not take on any cap space. The leafs lost Coli, but they have a lot of young defencemen ready to step in.

Last year, I probably would have laughed at that deal, but now it looks quite possible. It would make sense on a couple levels for the Devils, they need to rebuild the defense and Colaiocovo could help with that, plus they'd get rid of the $2.5 million or so Gionta will make, and then get a 1st round pick back in the deal.

Lou's definitely got his work cut out for him...

The Sloth is smart, and wouldn't deal with the Leafs

There are far more teams with better talent to deal with

Yes the great devils won the divison on the last day of the regular season.

Out of gomez and gionta if you can have one and had to get rid of one who will it be Mad?

i think gionta can be had for less not to mention he scored some very big goals for your devils last season.

As for gomez he has some brilliant speed and can break through defenders beter then alot of players. but at times isnt at his game as much as you know he is capable of. might be the beter one of the 2 to let go if cap space cant allow you to sign him.

Gomez has the highest trade value of either one, and will most likely be making more money than Gionta, so I'd rather part with Gomez than Gionta. I'd hate to lose either one, but it's probably going to happen. Gomez has already let it be known that he'd be interested in testing the free agent market next year. Problem with dealing Gomez is that the Devils would need to get a #1 center in return. Parise might eventually be the #1 center someday, but he's not ready yet. I'd rather play him in the #2 spot and either Gomez or somebody else in the #1 spot.

Gionta seems like the kind of guy who'd be willing to take a little less money to stay with the Devils. I think he likes being a Devil, not to mention his younger brother will be playing for Lowell this year. Maybe a little more incentive for him to stick around.:thumb:

No worries. Krypt is one of the few Rangers fans around that actually has his head screwed on straight (Mel's another one). I'll forgive Krypt his "Elias to the Rangers" delusion.:D

I'll swing you a deal

Everyone is happy
Done deal and let's never speak of it again

Oh and Smolinski comes with this package to but it's a "surprise" bonus

Hey Doc, Gomez and Parise for Havlat...

MadDevil

I'm beginning to think some people are enjoying the mess the Devils are in.:conspire:

Sorry Max and Ferret, I don't want to see Havlat in a Devils jersey. I've never really liked him that much to be honest. He doesn't strike me as a Devils-type player. The problem the Devils have is they're pretty weak down the middle. Gomez and Madden are the only two guys who played center for the entire season. The second line was a complete mess for most of the season with different guys rotating in and out. If the Devils dealt Gomez, Parise, or Madden, they'd need to get a top two line center in return.

MadDevil

Well, I've run a couple different scenarios out with the contracts, and it looks as if the Devils don't move anybody they'll be at around 49 million for the cap.

So, here's what I'm thinking:

Trade Rafalski to Edmonton for Bergeron straight up. That clears 3.2 million in space, and give the Devils a replacement for Rafalski's puck moving abilities for the next 3 years.

Trade Lukowich, Wiemer, and Marshall for picks, I don't really care where, just to get rid of them. There's another 2.8 million gone.

Combined, that's 6 million off the cap with those moves. The numbers really depend on what Gomez, Rafalski, and Martin get, so it might take more to get rid of that space. The lineup would look something like this:

Elias - Gomez - Gionta
Brylin - Parise - Langenbrunner
Pandolfo - Madden - Tallackson
Rupp/Ryznar - Free agent/Trade - Janssen

White - Martin
Matvichuk - Bergeron
Hale - Greene/Miller/Free agent/Trade

That would still leave them with a vacancy in the 4th line center position, and maybe a 5th or 6th defenseman. It's just one possible solution to the problem. If the Devils deal Gomez, it would open up even more space.

By the way, Elias' cap hit is actually only 6 million.;)

More good news...

Salary cap problems may force the Devils to trade center Scott Gomez if the team loses an arbitration hearing set for Friday in Toronto.

Negotiations between Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello and Carlos Gomez, who has served as his son's agent, have broken off and the two sides appear to be headed for a nasty hearing with arbitrator Richard Bloch.
