NHL hits NHLPA with another charge

NHL Cold War

The National Hockey League has filed an unfair labour practice charge with the U.S. Labor Relations Board over the NHLPA's attempts to be ''certified'' as a union in British Columbia and Quebec, TSN has learned.

Sources said the NHL made the filing today, charging that the NHLPA's efforts to apply for certified union status in those provinces on behalf of the players on two teams - the Vancouver Canucks and the Montreal Canadiens - is an unlawful attempt to withdraw from the ''multi-employer bargaining process.''

It is the third time the NHL has filed an ''unfair labor practice'' charge against the NHLPA with the NLRB.

There is a provincial labour hearing tomorrow in B.C. on the NHLPA application, which is part of the process to become certified.

Both sides are now peeing me off!! But I am still convinced a deal will be reached in time for the 05/06 season.

Same here... What exactly was the purpose of the NHLPA filling for this union certification anyways? What does it give them?

It seems like both sides are playing Russian Roulette, they keep spinning the chamber and putting the gun to their head. Sooner or later, they're going to hit a chamber with a bullet in it, and the NHL is going to end up killing itself.

They applied for certification in order to prevent the use of replacemant players.

As best as I can tell, (and I am completely unqualified to give an informed answer)... it seems that the PA has applied for certification in Quebec and BC, which, if successful would legally prevent the Canucks and Canadiens from using replacement players.

This all coming after the NHL declared it would not seek to employ replacement players. But you don't take somebody's word for anything these days.

I suppose the claims filed by the NHL are just standard legal "going through the motions" BS.

This is discouraging to read about. The only thing keeping me optimistic is that there are regular talks scheduled going forward... and both sides on the surface seem to believe this new "hybrid theory" being discussed might just contain a compromise scenario needed to get over the hump and get on to ironing out the details for a deal.

Oh that's right... I forgot about that
