J.R. wants to play in Canada - for cheap
Canadian Press

Jeremy Roenick took a look in the mirror after the season and didn't like what he saw. So he's doing something about it.

"It was a nightmare season from hell last year," Roenick said Wednesday from Los Angeles. "The embarrassment of the season I had last year is enormous. So I've totally re-arranged my summer and re-dedicated myself to the game of hockey.

"I'm working out and getting into the best shape possible that my body can get to. I want to make amends for a season lost. It was totally embarrassing."

The re-energized and re-focused Roenick will be an unrestricted free agent as of Saturday. And he knows where he wants to sign.

"I've always said I would like to play in Canada before my career is over," said the 36-year-old Boston native. "And it's one thing that I'm really anxious in doing. Don't be surprised if I end up on a Canadian team next week.

"That's something that's high on my list."

Whichever team signs him won't have to pay the $4.94-million US salary the Los Angeles Kings spent on him last season.

He's coming with a rebate this summer after putting up only 22 points (9-13) in 58 games during an injury-plagued season.

"It's not going to take much to sign me," said Roenick. "I'm not looking for the $2.5-million to $3-million deals, I'd like to go for a deal for less money and get some bonuses, which I can do at my age. I'd like my play to do the talking, get paid as to how I'm going to perform.

"I'm definitely going to be motivated by my performance," added Roenick. "And after what I'm doing this summer and the regimen that I'm on, as focused as I am back on the game of hockey, I feel very confident I'm going to have a big year next year _ without question."

He points to Teemu Selanne as the best example.

The Anaheim Ducks winger was awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy this past season after a remarkable comeback year, the 35-year-old winger scoring 40 goals and adding 50 assists after posting only 16 goals and 16 assists in his season with the Colorado Avalanche.

"I hope I can be exactly like Teemu Selanne was last year," said Roenick. "He had an atrocious year in Colorado, signed a contract with Anaheim and had one of his best years in a long time. And that's what I intend to do."

It all started with a meeting Roenick had with new Kings GM Dean Lombardi.

"He opened my eyes," said Roenick. "He kind of put me in a place where I haven't been in a long time. He made me aware of a lot of stuff that I've been neglecting for the last five years. There's a reason why I haven't been a dominant player for the last five years.

"And that's just not acceptable to me anymore."

The new Roenick needed a new lifestyle.

No more hanging out with his Hollywood buddies at clubs and living the life of a playboy athlete. He even changed his cellphone number to cut down on the temptations.

"Too many people are trying to get a hold of me and trying to get me to do things," he said. "It's time for me to take a step back."

When Roenick was traded to Los Angeles from Philadelphia last summer, it seemed like a match made in heaven. He's a natural in front of the camera and a great pitch man for the game.

With the NHL coming off a year-long lockout, Roenick did his best to sell the game. From appearances on Fox Sports TV's Best Damn Sports Show Period, to Carson Daly on NBC, to Party at the Palms with former Playboy Playmate Jenny McCarthy on the E! network, Roenick was everywhere.

It was too much.

"I've been worried about too much other stuff, too much entertaining, too much TV, instead of getting myself in proper condition," said Roenick. "It's not fair to me and it's not fair to the people that I work for.

"So I'm changing. I want to try and finish off this sucker the right way."

Over a month ago Roenick started working out six days a week with renowned trainer T.R. Goodman, who also works with Chris Chelios and Rob Blake among others.

"I've been in the gym at 6 every morning, and I do double sessions three to four days a week," said Roenick. "I've been going at it for over a month here in L.A. I'm on a diet and just really committed to get in the best shape I can. I owe it to myself.

"No hanging out at clubs anymore, I drink only one day a week and when I say drink, I have one or two glasses of wine with dinner. So I haven't been boozing."

He hopes it's worth it.

"I'm 100 per cent committed to what I'm doing right now," said Roenick. "I'm praying to God that this works for me because I know I can play this game, I know I can play with anybody in the world.

"I know I can still play at a high level and still dominate this game."

Anyone? Depending on what plays out with Havlat, J.R. might be good to have around in Ottawa for a year.

I would take a chance on Roenick, but not at 2.5 to 3 like he's saying.*edit* just re-read the article, it says he's NOT looking for 2.5 to 3 *
If he would sign for 1.5 - 2 with bonuses . . .get out the cheque-book.

J.R. brings a lot to the games.
If he's a serious as he says, he would make an excellent 3rd line(maybe 2nd line) centre.
He had 13 points for Philly in 18 playoff games(02-03).

Plus, he makes for good interviews

Yep . . .call Mucks!
I say make the deal

if he's really transformed as he says he might be worth a gamble.

If he is really focussed on regaining the form he had 6 years ago he will be a worthwhile addition to almost any team. I would love to see the Old JR in Toronto, but we already have such a traffic jam at the center position, his arrival would mean another one of our young centers would have to play wing.

If he regains his effectiveness he could be just what Sutter is looking for in Calgary. He would also look good playing with Naslund in Vancouver, or with Alfie in Ottawa.

I think I smell a soon to be member of the Toronto Maple Leafs

Like Styles said I'd welcome him with open arms in Ottawa for around 1.5
He's quickly become a fan favorite and would bring a new dynamic to ottawa's game.

But as said above this has Toronto written all over it. I just hope if it does materialize he doesn’t adopt the covenanted Leaf whining so well taught by players like Tucker and Domi. His antics + whining would make him the most irritating player ever. The good news is the master of pettiness is gone in Quinn so let’s hope this brings a new era in leaf land

Like I said I hope Ottawa takes a chance on him

J.R. wants to be a Sen ... or a Leaf
By BRUCE GARRIOCH, OTTAWA SUN

Leave it to Jeremy Roenick to up the hatred between the Senators and Maple Leafs.

After announcing this week that he would like to play in Canada before his NHL career is over, the 36-year-old soon-to-be unrestricted free agent told the Sun yesterday that Ottawa and Toronto are at the top of his wish list.

Speaking from Los Angeles, Roenick, who spent last season with the Kings, feels Ottawa or Toronto would provide what he's looking for as his career winds down.

"I've always had a lot of respect for the Senators and I know that they would be a great team to play with because they've got a lot of talent and a chance to win the Stanley Cup," said Roenick.

"As for Toronto, that would be great as well. Toronto is the hockey mecca. People live and breathe the game there. They care about it. They are such passionate fans. What hockey player wouldn't want to be part of something like that? It would be special for that to happen."

Roenick is coming off a disastrous season with the Kings and he's determined to make up for it. He said he's in the gym in Los Angeles early every day and dedicated himself to returning to the top of his game.

"Last year was just atrocious for me. I was embarrassed by what happened. I know that what I have to think about right now is being a (bleeping) hockey player, man," said Roenick, who was dealt to the Kings by the Flyers.

"I'm not going to be the guy who everybody can come and get for the great quote anymore. I'm going to be a hockey player first. A guy who performs on the ice. I'm going to be leader, but I'm going to lead by my performance. All I think I've been good for the last four years is somebody who can give people something to write. I'm not going to be a spokesman for the game anymore. I'm going to be a hockey player."

Before television stations, radio outlets and newspapers everywhere panic, Roenick admitted he wanted to go to a place where hockey got front page coverage ... all the time.

"Philadelphia was a great hockey city, but the Eagles are still No. 1 there," said Roenick. "I don't want to go to a place where hockey is buried on page D4 in the sports section. I want to go to a place where hockey is on the front page and people care about the game.

"People in Canada love the game. It would be fun to play in that kind of atmosphere because you'd know when you make something happen that people are going to notice. It would help me because I don't think I've been close to playing the game the way that I am capable of playing it."

But Roenick is well aware if he does sign with a team like Ottawa or Toronto there would be plenty of pressure to produce.

"That doesn't scare me one bit. I have never backed away from pressure in my career and I am not about to start right now, I can guarantee you that. Every athlete wants the pressure and they should want to live for the pressure," said Roenick.

"That's what should make you tick ... the pressure. If people in Canada put pressure on you, then that means they care and they expect you to perform. I've always wanted one chance to play in Canada in my career. I'm going to play four or five more years and I'd certainly like at least one of those years to be in Canada and to have that kind of experience."

The Senators could use a centre like Roenick if he is able to perform to his capabilities. He is willing to accept a contract with bonus clauses and has great memories of Ottawa after spending his junior career across the river with the Hull Olympiques.

"I have great memories of Ottawa and the area. I loved every minute I played there and I would love to go back there to help them win a Stanley Cup. That would be something I would love to be a part of," said Roenick.

Hopefully, Senators GM John Muckler is listening.

How many Concussions is he up to now?

Somewhere in the neighbourhood of Lindros's tally if memory serves me correct?

A lot of people call Lindros egghead, well meet his ugly long lost twin sister!

Not for me, I would much rather have a Roberts back!

blah blah blah it never ends with this guy. The player Roenick describes is just that way naturally... he doesn't proclaim to be that or desire to be that... he just is.

After a career of mouthing off, declining performance into his late 30's - and like Rusty said all those concussions - now he's gonna be the next Yzerman all the sudden?

Believe it when I see it..... and don't hear it.

I don't dispute his love and passion for the game, the thing that bothers me is that we may just witness a head injury casuing death and most likely it will be him being carried off the ice.

If Leaf fans don't want him that's fine. I'd love to see him in a Sens jersey with an incentive based contract. We need a guy with balls that clank.

Since when was Pheonix considered a Canadian city?

Must be all of those Snowbirds that flock down there in the winter! (someday me and mine will be part of that yearly exodus!)

Maybe no Canadian team wanted him, so he just went to a place he was comfortable in.

J.R. loves to see his name in print.
Personally, I would have welcomed him to Ottawa with open arms.
But now, I hope he sucks as bad as last year in LaLa land.

J.R. it's time to mean what you say.

Actually he was an hour away from signing with the Flames, but Phoenix came out of nowhere. It wasn't really Barnett that made the signing, moreso Gretzky.
