The New Jersey Devls have scheduled a news conference this afternoon to announce the hiring of a new head coach.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello coached the team for much of the season after Larry Robinson stepped down in December. The Devils were 32-18 under Lamoriello and won the Atlantic Division title thanks to an 11-game winning streak to end the regular season.

It is not known who will take over behind the Devils bench, but assitant John MacLean is among the candidates. MacLean ran many of the practices after Robinson left the team.

The news conference is scheduled for 2pm et/11am pt.

Also on this day in 2002

The New Jersey Devils named Pat Burns head coach. He replaced Kevin Constantine, who was fired

Things that make you say hrmmmm, could the Devils announce that Burnsy is back on the job on the anniversary of his hiring??

I don't really know all that much about Julien, but he sounds like a no-nonsense type of coach, which is exactly what the Devils need. I thought that John MacLean may have gotten the job, but he's more of a players coach, which makes him a good assistant.

Maybe he'll follow in the footsteps of the last two coaches the Devils hired that were previously in the Canadiens system (Jacques Lemaire and Larry Robinson) that went on to coach the Devils to Cup championships.:thumb:
