Veteran goaltender Curtis Joseph won't be heading back to the Toronto Maple Leafs - or any other team in the league - after re-signing with the Phoenix Coyotes.
CBC Sports
Curtis Joseph was a bright spot for Phoenix last season, and the Coyotes rewarded him with a one-year deal on Friday.
Joseph and the club agreed to a one-year, $2 million US contract Friday. The deal also includes performance bonuses.
Joseph was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and was expected to attract interest on the free agent market this off-season.
At 39, Joseph posted a respectable 32-21 record in his first season with a Coyote club that failed to make the playoffs.
He had a 2.91 goal-against average to go along with four shutouts, and became just the sixth netminder in NHL history to earn 400 career victories.
"We are very pleased to re-sign Curtis," said Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky. "He had an outstanding season for us last year and was our MVP. "We look forward to having him back."
Joseph, who made $900,000 US last season, is third among active goaltenders in wins (428 ).
"He continues to write new records while playing at his customary high level," Coyotes general manager Michael Barnett said in a statement. "More importantly, Curtis gives us a chance to win every night." Over the course of 16 NHL seasons with St. Louis, Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit and Phoenix, Joseph has a career mark of 428-310-90 and a 2.76 GAA.
$2 million plus performance bonuses. Not bad. I think performance bonuses are a good idea.
