While Lou Lamoriello expressed confidence that the Devils won't be charged the $3.6M against the cap next season owed the retired and/or suspended Vladimir Malakhov, that is not the current position of the league.

"Nothing has changed from our perspective with respect to the treatment of Malakhov's contract next year," deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote in an e-mail to Slap Shots on Wednesday.

Daly has previously stated that Article 50.5d B(5) mandates the Devils be cap-charged the full amount of the contract next season even if Malakhov doesn't play. The same holds true for the $3.5M remaining on the contract of the waived Alexander Mogilny.

... sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but between Brodeur, these 2 and Elias that could very well be $20,000,000

Lou Lam was brilliant in the old NHL, not so much the new one.

Lou was on the negotiating committee that created the NHL:shrug:

Throw in McGillis' $2.2 million, and they could be responsible for $9.3 million in three players that won't even be with the team (Malakhov, Mogilny, McGillis). With those three factored in, the Devils are already responsible for $29 million next season, without Elias, Gomez, Gionta, or Langenbrunner signed (among other players).:curse:

I will be interested to see how Lou handles this whole thing. He is one sneaky bastard after all. I'm not going to panic yet though, Lou is still the best GM in the league IMO. Even he's entitled to a screw up occasionally. I just hope this screwup doesn't end up costing the Devils Elias or Gomez.:(

Although, the Canucks are looking for a #1 center, and Vancouver is a lot closer to Alaska than New Jersey is.:conspire: :(

Yep, but that doesn't mean he'd still be a dynamo in the new system like he was in the last one.

No, but it does mean he should've been very familiar with how dangerous those contracts were.

I still don't know what he was thinking with Malakhov at 3.5 for 2 years. I had a lot of respect for Lamoriello over the years but that signing made my jaw drop.

Malakhov has a long and well known history of mediocrity and wasted potential.

The mountain of a man who rarely fights.

One of the NHL's strongest players yet somehow he does not intimidate.

The guy with that blistering slap shot which is rarely even close to accurate.

I can understand why Lou was looking for some established names to shore up his defense post Stevens/Neidermayer, but I cannot for the life of me understand how he valued Malakhov at that price.

Vladimir Malakhov was finished the last time he was a Devil, so I have no freaking clue what Lou was thinking with that move. Mogilny I can understand a bit more (although $3.5 million a year for a guy coming off hip surgery isn't exactly great either), but $3.6 million a year for Malakhov? It just continues to baffle me...especially considering Rafalski is only making $600,000 more a year than Malakhov's deal (and even he's a bit overpaid for what he produces IMO).

But, it's really the first mind numbingly bad decision Lou has made in his tenure with the Devils, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I just hope this doesn't end up costing the Devils a player they need. Lou makes moves that nobody sees coming, so I really have no clue what to expect this offseason.
