Well game one was a complete success. Brodeur was great, the PP was rocking and they even did it without the services of their best defensive defenseman, with White re-aggrivating a groin injury. Elias was on fire. Overall New Jersey got the result it wanted, and that is all that matters.
The War of Attrition has begun, and the Hart and soul of the Rangers appeared to leave with a possible shoulder separation. Jagr did something to himself when he tried to punch/elbow Gomez in the head. Although I have personally heard no confirmation, people were saying that it looked like a seperation, judging from the way the arm was hanging.
Good Job Dev's. :thumb: Three more to go in this round.
One win down, 15 more to go.:)
Unfortunately I had to work tonight, so I couldn't see the game. Just taking a look at the stats though, it looks like everybody the Devils need to show up did. Elias with 2 goals and 4 assists.
Nice win, but not getting overconfident is still the key. The PP was on fire tonight, but you can't always count on it to be that way. Keep up the pressure on the Rangers, and they seem to make more mistakes, which is what "Devils Hockey" is all about.
White did not get ejected for boarding. He re-aggravated a groin injury from what they were saying.
The devils did a good job taking full advantage of their power play chances.
I'd say Elias reverse kick pass to Langenbrunner was the play of the game.

Did he? I missed the hit but the way the commentators where talking, it was the reason he was gone. I'll fix that. Well, that's too bad for Colin, NJ was counting on some important minutes from him against Jagr. Although Jagr even if he plays, has to be affected from what he did to himself in game 1.
Elias' pass was a very nice move.
I hope White didn't reaggravate it too badly, he's going to be a very important part of the Devils defense if they advance to the second round or beyond. He's starting to remind me quite a bit of Ken Daneyko in the role he plays for this team. He's a rock in his own end (he still makes mistakes occasionally), he plays against the other teams best players, he always defends his teammates, and of course he only has a couple teeth left.

Maybe that was the particular play where he tweaked the groin and had to leave... can't remember. But I know for sure that his boarding call on Jagr was just a 2 minute minor. He didn't get tossed.
The only ejection in the game was to Ryan Hollweg for instigating Janssen late in the 3rd.
The only ejection in the game was to Ryan Hollweg for instigating Janssen late in the 3rd.
Go figure, those two got together after Janssen said "He knows I'm coming, it's going to be clean, it's going to be at the right time" after the last regular season meeting when Hollweg nailed Brylin into the boards.
This series has the potential to get quite ugly...
If we get some 5-on-5 maybe those two will get a chance to meet again!

The Devils and Canes are playing now. They are almost done the first period. Carolina is up 1-0.
Happy Birthday, Martin. What were you doing last night?
A lot of fortunate bounces for Carolina but I must say Martin Brodeur looked like vintage Patrick Lalime on a few of the many goals he gave up. Much credit goes to the Hurricanes for their impressive showing handing NJD their first loss in 15 games. Great pressure on the Devils and an outstanding execusion of the powerplays they were given. Congrats to Cam Ward on the awesome shutout.
I fully expect New Jersey and Brodeur to respond in a big way in game two.

I am still waiting for Cam Ward to get really tested. He certainly was not tonight by the Devils, and while Montreal's shots on goal may make it seem like he was, with the exception of game 3 were he definitely stole the show, Montreal had alot of their shots outside the perimetre and easy to see the rest of that series.
Anyone else worrying about the condition of MD's house? Or for that matter his hands. Hope he didn't break anything ;).

If MadDevil is a longtime NJ fan I doubt he is too worried or upset yet. NJ has gotten down in series past, or been humiliated in one game, and come back to win the series that I can remember.

Doesn't mean he's not stark raving mad.. he's a Devils fan by choice! I'd be surprised if his couch is still in one piece :thumb:
... last time I was at home and something bad happened in an Oiler game (the no show against Detroit in one of the last games of the season I think) I threw.. several objects. We'll leave it at that ;).

Don't worry, everything is still in one piece in my house.
I'm obviously a bit pissed off over the results of the game, but I'm not worried. It might actually help the Devils to have gotten their asses handed to them right out of the gate. No offense to Rangers fans, but the Devils had the easiest first round matchup of any team that advanced. They haven't been tested against a good team in the playoffs until now, so getting dominated by the Canes might give them a good dose of reality, and eliminate any possible underestimation of Carolina. Marty always bounces back after a bad game, so I expect a much sharper performance on Monday.
Carolina played a perfect game, their PP clicked, and they got good goaltending (although Ward faced few really difficult chances). With the Devils having a long time off between series, there was obviously going to be some kind of rust, and it showed. If you take away the power plays, it was a 1-0 game, and the only even strength goal the Devils gave up came off of Lukowich's skate. With all the bounces that went the Devils way in the Rangers series, they're bound to have some go against them.
I expect a much better performance in Game 2, Lou will see to it.:thumb:

It was almost like watching a repeat of the Anh v Col game. The team that had the time off, looked like it was still taking time off.
Hopefully all the lucky ones went in today.
Were they the Devils or just some guys dressed in Devils uniforms? Carolina were all over them.

It was reallly the Albany Farm team. :D
Blame it on Langenbrunner, hes' the one who hired the strippers for Marty's party last night.:D
For some reason the guys were all weak in the legs. :D

The Devils had a bad game, but I think they will come back with a vengenance
Perhaps this was a wakeup call. Ward isn't that good..the defense is just doing a great job
I still say Devils in 5

I agree the defence for Carolina has done a great job making Ward look better than he is, no disrespect to Ward. Also though Montreal in the last 3 games of the last series, and NJ in the first game of this series did not do a good job getting people in front of him, screening him at all, he could see every shot. Interstingly in the last round vs the Rangers, the Rangers did a relatively poor job of doing that in front of Brodeur as well.
How on earth do you leave Eric Staal alone in front of the net with 3 seconds left?
Wow... another crazy finish.
Okay, now I'm afraid for the welfare of MD's home in ND.
Wow, what a finish to regulation. With 20 seconds left, the Devils get an ugly one from Gomez and it looks like New Jersey has a split going home. But Eric Staal had other plans and with 3 seconds to go he ties the game.
Let's go to overtime!

Great ******* job blowing a game guys. Hey, let's leave a 100 point scorer wide open in front of the ******* net with 3 seconds left. Jesus ******* Christ.:curse: :curse:
I can't even begin to describe how pissed off I am right now. First to get blown out 6-0 in Game 1, and then to blow a lead after getting a lucky bounce with 21 seconds left. Marty should chew his teams ass royally for leaving him out to dry for the second straight game. Absolutely pitiful.
Excuse me while I go back to cleaning up the beer I threw on the wall.

Without Colin White, the Devils defense is looking suspect. He would have had Staal on his butt.

The Devils played alot better than the first game, and they have two home games coming up. All is not lost for them for sure, not yet anyway.
The bottom line in this series so far is that Carolina is simply outskating the Devils. With the exceptions of Rafalski and Martin, the Devils defense is not very fast, and the Hurricanes have taken advantage of it. The Devils really didn't have to worry about that kind of speed against the Rangers, and they could basically shut down a few offensive players, and that was it. It's not the same case with Carolina.
Elias, after having a great opening series, has practically disappeared, and appears to not want to shoot for whatever reason. There were several times where he tried to make a fancy play, but was cut off by the Hurricanes defense. Brian Gionta has been MIA the entire series. Gomez, Parise, and Langenbrunner have been all played well, but beyond that, not much.
The most telling stat of this game was that from the beginning of the second period, to about halfway through the third, the Devils had a total of 4 shots. That's roughly 30 minutes with only 4 shots. It's just not gonig to get it done.
The Devils were one of the better home teams in the league, so I'm hoping they can regroup and get back to what was working for them the last month or so. Needless to say, Game 3 is a huge one in the series...

I agree Elias and Gomez are the two who have looked the most dissapointing of the Devils players so far, relative to what they are expected of course.

Where's Mogilny?
Isn't it time for him to be called up and put on the fourth line?
Or am I hitting the panic button too soon.
OR is he even available?
Lou has said (I can't seem to find the link right now) that Mogilny will not suit up for the Devils again this season, regardless of what happens in the playoffs. And really, what good could Mogilny do them at this point? The Devils had win streaks of 9 and 11 games (15 if you count the playoffs) in the second half of the season, all without Mogilny. Mogilny is not the answer at this point, the Devils just need to get back to what they were doing before this series.
Carolina had the second most wins on home ice during the regular season, while the Devils were only 3 games above .500 away from New Jersey. The results to the beginning of this series don't shock me (obviously, it's pretty demoralizing to lose like that). The Devils were 27-11-3 at home this season, so I'm not going to panic yet. They've been through a lot as a team, and they're a pretty close group this year, so I don't think they'll allow themselves to have 3 bad games in a row (at least I hope).
By the way, it sounds like Colin White will be back in the lineup for Game 3. I think they've missed him quite a bit against the Canes.
After playing much better in Game 2, New Jersey should benefit from the return of Colin White, the rugged defenseman who has missed the last five postseason games with a groin injury. He skated during the optional workout and he said he was going to play.
"Obviously, we're down 0-2 and we have a hill to climb," White said. "You have to start somewhere."

Turn out the lights, the party's over...
It looks like that great comeback to win the division is all going to go for nothing, barring a complete miracle comeback. Figures, Brodeur was good in Game 2, and the rest of the team let them down, and now the rest of the team played relatively well, and Brodeur gave up at least 1 bad goal (which ended up costing them the game). As unlucky as the Rangers were against the Rangers, now the Devils are as unlucky against the Hurricanes. It's just not meant to be I guess.:(

You need two things to win the cup...
Luck and good players.
In round 1 NJ had both, in round 2 they had one. I honestly thought NJ would walk all over Carolina; I haven't watched but Brodeur stunk it up in game 1.. game 2 everyone else stunk it up, and the PK has been completely dominated.
Sound about right?

Pretty much. Although to be honest, Brodeur really wasn't as bad in Game 1 as most people think. 2 or 3 of the goals came off lucky bounces, and the rest he had Carolina players swarming all over him with little help from his defense. Game 2, he was the only reason they ever had a chance to win at all.
That being said, Marty let in a really soft goal on a weak backhander from Cullen in this game, and it ended up being the difference. The biggest problem in this series has been the disappearance of Gomez, Elias, and Gionta on the scoresheet. When those 3 don't produce, the Devils just don't have the offensive depth to make up for it.
Not much Devils fans can do but hope for a miracle at this point. It really is a shame considering the way they ended the season. Maybe they peaked a bit too early...

Welcome to Hockey Station. Teams have dug themselves out of holes before I just don't know it the Devils can.
Teams have dug themselves out of holes before I just don't know if the Devils can.
I'm trying to remain optimistic, but it will take a complete collapse by Cam Ward and the Hurricanes for the Devils to win this series. Even in Game 3, at home, trailing 2-0 in the series, they didn't play with any urgency. That doesn't bode well for the future. At this point I'd just like to see them not get swept at home.:(
You gotta give the Canes some credit. They have allowed just 9 goals now in 7 straight playoff wins.
However don't forget they allowed 12 in their first 2 playoff games (both losses).
Both these teams have shown their momentum can turn quickly. If the Devils get a few bounces and some confidence they can handle it... who knows where it can lead. They can beat the Canes, but they need a little good fortune maybe to turn the tides.

What the Devils really need is somebody to step up in that locker room and chew some serious ass. This is where they really miss a player like Scott Stevens or Scott Niedermayer, or a coach like Pat Burns. The Devils did fine without those guys during the regular season, but the playoffs are another thing entirely. If you think about it, the Devils had 13 years where they had both Stevens and Niedermayer for just about every playoff game. That kind of veteran experience and leadership is not something easily replaced.
The thing that really bothers me about this series has been the lack of urgency and desperation the Devils have played with. In Game 2, they spent half the game with only 4 shots, and then in Game 3 they came out on fire, and then went completely flat for most of the game after going down 2-1. It's the same problem they had early in the season. They'd give up a couple of quick goals, and never recover. When they were winning at the end of the season, they bounced back after almost every goal by the other team. Now, it seems as if they completely lose confidence when they get scored on. I really do think the end of Game 2, combined with the soft goal Marty gave up in Game 3 have completely demoralized this team.
Did you know that J.P. Parise was on the 1974-75 Islanders team that overcame a 3-0 series deficit against the Penguins? Parise's son Zach plays for the Devils, who are trailing their series 3-0. Is it fate, or just a ridiculous connection drawn by a desperate Devils fan?

Can somebody tell me where the New Jersey Devils team that played Game 4 came from? I haven't seen them since the first round.:slant:
One win down, three more to go. If they can carry the momentum over into Game 5, and get the series back to New Jersey for Game 6, they could force a Game 7, and we all know anything can happen then. It's possible, but not all that likely I know. Unfortunately, Game 4's performance may end up being a case of "too little, too late".
They overcame the biggest deficit to win their division in NHL history, so why not add another historic comeback to the season?:)

Well, that's it for this season.
Obviously I'm disappointed at the results, but I have to hand it to the Hurricanes. They outplayed the Devils in 4 of the 5 games, and deserved to win this series. The Devils PP wasn't able to take advantage of 5 straight opportunities in this game, and Carolina took advantage of it.
No shame in this loss, I'm proud of what the Devils were able to accomplish this season. Considering they lost their two best defensemen in the offseason, lost their head coach to cancer, and their leading scorer for half the season, for them to win the division and make it to the second round is a pretty good accomplishment. It's not as good as winning a Cup, but it's still a pretty good one.
Thanks for the season, the Devils will be back again.:thumb:

Thanks for welcoming me to this site...as I can say about the devils they played there hearts out and try the best they could do in a short amount of time. Even though they are out, they are still good in my book considering to what they had to deal with the past year. They will be back next year to win the cups, I have a gut feeling they will come back even better then before. I would think so. So good luck next year devils, I'll be supporting you guys in every way possible.
