So the Devils have been kicking some serious butt for the second half of the season, and actually pulled even with Philly with a win Thursday. So with the team already on a roll heading into the playoffs, my question has to do with the post season roster. What's the talk in New Jersey about the return of Mogilny and McGillis?

It is like making a big trade without giving anyone up. Smart move by Lou, just paying their salary and letting them sit in the minors instead of trading Mogilny for something like what Fedorov got in return.

So anyway whats the scoop out of Jersey?

Personally, I hope neither one ever wears a Devils jersey again, but maybe it's just me. The team has really gelled since both were sent down, and Elias came back. I don't know if Lou would want to risk the chemistry in the locker room right now by bringing either one back. McGillis will definitely not be called upon this season, the Devils already have 8 solid defensemen (when healthy anyway) with White, Rafalski, Martin, Matvichuk, Lukowich, Klee, Albelin, and Hale, and I just don't see them adding another D-man at this point (unless somebody goes down with an injury).

Mogilny is pretty unlikely to come back as well, but with Lou Lamoriello in charge, anything is possible. The Devils have been switching between Janssen and Kozlov on the 4th line (yes, Kozlov is playing with a bunch of grinders). Parise has started to look good playing on the wing with Gomez and Gionta. Elias has clicked at times with Brylin and Langenbrunner on the second line. And the third line with Pandolfo/Madden/Marshall has played well together as well. Rasmussen and Wiemer have brought a physical presence down the stretch, and will probably play the same role in the playoffs. Bottom line, I just don't know who the Devils would leave out to bring Mogilny up.

It's unlikely that either one will play again for the Devils this year IMO...

I know the Devils are just rocking along so the current lineup must be working. Thats why I was thinking of Mogilny playing on the third or fourth line. The third line is looking good though. A real bonafide shutdown line. The splitting of Elias and the Two G's provides an excellent ballance to the offense. Still Kozlov with Mogilny on the Fourth line could be too much for most other teams fourth line to handle, and could pot some timely goals.

No matter what happens, I have New Jersey as one of my favorites for coming out of the East.

Interesting little tidbit at the end of an article about Gomez regarding the future of Mogilny...

Lamoriello said he expects Mogilny, who spent the second half of last season in the minors, to attend training camp in September. And he didn't rule out his playing for the Devils this season.

If they're going to pay him 3.5 million, they might as well use him for something this year. I was on the Mogilny hater wagon last year, but now I wouldn't mind seeing him back again. If nothing else, maybe he can take over Kozlov's position of "shootout specialist".

Yet another chapter in the genius book of Lou Lamoriello...

San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has acquired forward Alexander Korolyuk from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a third round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

So basically Lou traded Malakhov and a 1st round pick for Fahey and a 3rd round pick. A depth defenseman, a 3rd round pick, and 3.6 million in cap space (which in turn led to the re-signing of Elias, Gomez, Gionta, etc.) for a player not even in the league and a 1st round pick. In Lou We Trust.:thumb:

can you refresh my memory please on how old Lou "traded" Malakov?

IIRC he was signed at 3.5 per and then either did or didn't retire - but either way he stopped playing for the devils and is no longer in the NHL to the best of my knowledge.

So how did Lou move him to and where? was it a cap issue type thing?

The Devils traded Malakhov and a 1st round pick to the Sharks in exchange for Jim Fahey and the rights to Korolyuk before the season. So basically the Sharks were dumping two players who weren't in their plans for this season in exchange for a 1st rounder. Malakhov's salary counts against the Sharks' cap this year until his contract expires. Something tells me that Lou and Doug Wilson had some kind of handshake deal in place to trade Korolyuk's rights back to them. Korolyuk had made it clear that he was going to play in Europe this year, so moving his rights was really no big deal.

By the way, Eklund is now reporting that this could be a prelude to a bigger move from the Sharks. But it is Eklund, so take it for what it's worth.
