.. it's Garrioch.

Still interesting though:

Personally, I think it makes sense for the Oilers solely because they could sign Richards and then trade Stoll or Horcoff for a quality 'tender. I'd love it.

Makes sense for the leafs too since Sundin won't be around for too much longer. I don't see the rush but I wouldn't be overly surprised by this.

Should point out, you'd lose 4 1st round draft picks.

The Oilers can afford to do so with their prospect cabinet being pretty full of both NHL ready guys and guys who are very close. Star level guys include Schremp, Dubnyk, Pouliot and Cogliano, then they have several 2nd/3rd liners and 2nd pairing defenseman in the likes of Jacques, Greene, Gilbert, Syvret, Chorney and Truhkno.

Richards, value-wise, isn't worth 4 first rounders. Not even low ones. Brad was somewhat of a lower pick himself, proving good players are always available. You just need to find them. And for teams like Ottawa (or Edmonton even) I'd fancy their odds at doing so. I'd pass if I was either club. Sure, he's great. But he's no Crosby or Ovechkin.

Who's available on the UFA market anyway this summer for free?

This is not likely going to happen

However, I'd love to see Richards a Hab or Canuck :D

I agree he's not worth 4 first rounders, but I don't think the value is that far off, especially if Richards is going to push your team to be a legitimate contender for the next 4 years. The value of a first rounder has been absolutely smashed by the CBA. You keep a player for 7 years at the NHL level - a late pick will need about 3 years at the NHL level to become an effective player who helps you win. So you're giving up 4 years of 4 first rounders, however the chance that the first round pick turns out to be a player who you can actually use is about 30%.

So.. I don't mind throwing picks away. They're over-valued.

If you want me to find the stats I will ;)

As for the UFA market this year.. it's crap outside of defenseman and a couple goalies. The best offensive forwards are Elias, Savard, Samsonov and Selanee. Sakic/Yzerman/Shanahan obviously aren't going anywhere, and personally I think Elias and Selanee will stay right where they are.

Samsonov and Savard are going to get very big paydays.

Why would Toronto even consider giving up 4, 1st round picks for this guy.
If JFJ was serious about getting Richards he should have traded a couple of our young centers that are already on the team at the deadline. But to sign him to some over-priced offersheet and give up 4 picks on top of that, when there is already a traffic jam at the center position? No Thanks. Mats is still going to be a #1 center for atleast one or two more years. He needs a winger. Make the offer to Elias not Richards.

For Tampa not to match the offersheet I think it will have to be well over 6 million dollars per season. It would not surprise me to see Richards get 7 million on a offersheet.

Exactly!:thumb:

The age for free agency is dropping so why would anybody sign anyone big to an offer sheet, does'nt make sense when you'll be able to sign UFA 25 yr olds pretty soon!

Bring on Elias!:D

Then you can keep on dreaming NJ, because he's not going anywhere. At least he damn well better not.:conspire:

Although I hear that when he was growing up in Europe, he always dreamed of wearing The Blue and White.:D
