2006 Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist joins Flyers organization

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 6?0?, 192-pound center Ryan Potulny (poh-TUHL-nee) to a two-year entry-level contract, according to club Assistant General Manager Paul Holmgren.

?We are excited about having Ryan in our organization,? said Holmgren in making the announcement. ?If you look at his track record in the USHL and in the WCHA playing for the University of Minnesota, he has always been a point producer. He is more of a goal scorer than a playmaker. He has an exceptional release and an elusiveness, an ability to get open, in the offensive zone. He is one of those guys that has demonstrated at each level that he has played that he can score goals.?

?It?s a dream come true,? said Potulny. ?Ever since I was a young child, it (playing in the NHL) was something that I would dream about and it doesn?t happen for many people. I am so excited to be part of this first-class organization.?

Potulny, 21, was an All-WCHA First Team honoree and 2006 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Finalist after recording 38 goals and 25 assists for 63 points and 31 penalty minutes in 41 games for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers this past season. Potulny ranked first in the nation in points (63), goals (38) and goals per game (0.93), tied for first in power play goals (17) and was second in points per game (1.54). He was first in the WCHA in goals (23) and tied for second in points (42) and led Minnesota in goals (38), points (63), power play goals (17) and game-winning goals (5).

In three seasons with the Golden Gophers (2003-04 through 2005-06), Potulny registered 68 goals and 50 assists for 118 points and 61 penalty minutes in 100 career games. He missed the majority of the 2003-04 season recovering from a knee injury sustained in a game against North Dakota on November 7, 2003.

A native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Potulny was drafted by the Flyers in the third round (87th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft after playing two seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League. He led the USHL in assists (43) and points (78) for the 2002-03 season and was a member of the Lincoln team that captured the 2003 Clark Cup as champions of the USHL. Potulny was named USHL Player of the Year, USHL's Top Forward and to the USHL First All-Star Team following the 2002-03 season.

Damn, Potulny is just aching to be on my hated list already. First he betrays his state by choosing to go to Minnesota instead of North Dakota to play college hockey, and then he signs with the Flyers.:curse: :D

and then he signs with the Flyers.:curse: :D

He may even play with them soon. For some reason in the complicated CBA, he can't report to the Phantoms so he is with the Flyers. Maybe Hitch sat the wonderkid Savage and put Potulny out there, he would actually put the puck in the net.

Potulny Takes Part in First Practice

Flyers prospect Ryan Potulny, who inked a two-year deal with the club on Wednesday, was already in town and taking part in his first practice.

Hitchcock was immediately impressed, and did not rule out using the 21-year old in case of emergency.

“As he moves along into next week we’ll take a hard look at him. One day out there, I’ve got to tell you, he looks like a very smart, skilled player,” said Hitchcock.

“The puck follows him around the rink. You don’t score 40 goals in college by accident and have the numbers he’s had. He has a gift around the net, and we saw some of that in practice today. If he looks like he can help us, there’s no hesitation on our part putting him in.”

Potulny knows some of the younger players in the locker room due to summer rookie camps that the Flyers hold every offseason.

“I had a chance to play with those guys in a couple summers camps a couple years ago so I know them a little bit,” he said. “It’s fun for me to have some of the younger guys here, and I can relate to them a little better. Carter already came up and asked me to hang out, so maybe he can show me the ropes a little bit. It’s nice to have those guys here.”

Umberger, himself a product of the NCAA, remembers what it was like.

“It’s an awkward feeling but at the same time it’s an exciting feeling,” said Umberger. "He’s going to start a long career.”

He's here to stay as Petr Nedved is put on waivers again and will not be back with the big club.Ryan Potulny will take over Nedveds spot and develop into a full time NHL'er which is good to see!:thumb:

All the Flyers need is for the injured to get back, these injuries are getting ridicolous, year in year out its frustrating!

Cheers
