View Full Version : Pink hockey sticks
Thank god I found out about this ahead of time and didn't just turn on the TV to see this....
WALLACEBURG, Ontario -- Some NHL players will be in the pink this weekend on the ice.
In a tribute to hockey moms and to raise awareness of breast cancer, hockey players such as Tie Domi, Mats Sundin, Steve Yzerman, Sidney Crosby and Ed Belfour will use pink sticks during games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Chatham Daily News reported Wednesday.
Equipment manufacturer TPS Hockey is spending an estimated $50,000 for the initiative, which sprouted in the Gretzky family home in Brantford, Ont., shortly after the death of Wayne Gretzky's mother, Phyllis.
"It's a tribute to hockey moms," said Brad Janson, TPS' director of pro hockey.
Janson said the deaths of Phyllis Gretzky to lung cancer, and TPS' new owner Paul Walker's sister to breast cancer motivated the charitable effort.
He said most of the players know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. It will definitely be unique to see "a tough and rough player using a pink stick," Janson said.
"Pink is not usually synonymous with hockey," said Gary Ireland, a supervisor at the southwestern Ontario plant where the 75 workers have been busy painting the sticks.
TPS is picking up the tab for the $300 cost of each stick and its painting.
Janson estimates more than 400 pink sticks will hit the ice this weekend.
Each player, and goalie, has his name inscribed on the stick, which will later be autographed and auctioned to raise money for breast cancer research.

I like the way Tie Domi is the first named
Tie Who?
I read earlier most of the Sens will be doing the same tonight... It would have been funny tuning in through the game asking WTF is with the pink sticks

Tie '1000 games = 3 minutes of ice time' Domi
I guess Domi mentioned using a pink stick is kinda funny. He is after all closing in on the #2 all time PIM leader in NHL history.
All in all I think this is pretty bizarre, even if for a good cause... what happened to arm bands and stuff?

Yeah I agree
Maybe it's supposed to represent some sort of humbling experience but I still think the pink stick is a little odd
Its just a stick that is of a different colour, I have no problem with it as it is a good cause. Its a shame that some would rather focus on a player thats involved rather then support a cause that can and probably will in some way effect most of us someday.

Ah we're just teasing Domi Amo, I think it's a good cause and real men wear pink anyways right?

Well the article mentions the sticks will be auctioned off. I'm sure pink sticks will raise a lot more money than arm bands:thumb:

But Amo, haven't you ever heard that laughter is the best medicine?
I'm not sure what that has to do with this thread considering breast cancer patients probably don't read it, but whatever.

I like this idea, it just draws attention to the issue... and im sure the commentators will annoyingly mention what the pink sticks are for all through the hockey games.... They should hopefully be able to raise money for reaserch in this field, cause I think everyone at some pnt is some how effected by cancer.

Allfacts News Wire: Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson was "giddy as a school girl on prom night" when news of TPS's plan to equip some NHL players with Pink hockey sticks in a tribute to raise awareness for breast cancer. Alfredsson was quoted as saying: "Like, OH-MY-GOD!!!
According to team mate Jason Spezza, Alfreddson has been pushing NHL offices to make pastel coloured hockey sticks mandatory across the league. "Yeah... he was always going on about accessorizing with his earrings and tiara... the guys and I were always like 'yeah, what's that all about anyways?' but I guess we just thought he was trying to get attention. formulates Spezza. "I guess he'll be pretty peeved that it's not permanent."
TPS only plans on making 400 of the cotton candy coloured sticks to be used in games this weekend. When news hit Alfredsson that his name was not one of the names being inscribed on the batch of sticks and that the move was only temporary he left reporters with no comment and only a tear in his eye. Yelling and screaming could be heard from outside the locker room shortly after.

I wouldn't bet the farm on that statement being true. Breast cancer affects many people (including men), and is nothing to laugh at.
I have no problem with pink hockey sticks, as was said earlier, it is just a colour. If auctioning them off is going to raise money then I am all for it.
As for Domi using a pink stick, I can see the irony but I would like to meet the person who decided that pink was only for girls.
Two thumbs up for the players who choose to participate in raising money for this worthy cause. :thumb::thumb:

I also had salmon pink pants that I wore to play golf in, ah the 80's.
On another matter it would be funny if these pink sticks took off as popular item and started turning up at minor hockey arenas in the future.
Geez KB, where did you find these?

not bad but I had reddish-brown hair in those days  :pimp:
I suppose none of you have had a loved one die of cancer?
I think it is a great cause, and I hope they are very successful with this.

Sorry Rusty didn't mean for this o wander into joke territory. If I was to actually watch the first game tonight it will be intresting to see if Don Cherry is wearing a pink ribbon. Whatever players and people with a high profile can do to raise awareness and money for a worthy cause I am all in favour of. As long as they don't call attention to themselves at the expense of the cause.
I'm looking forward to seeing all of the pink sticks. Kingston has an unusually high rate of breast cancer. Many of my friends have been afflicted with it and a few have died.. I have even had a scare but I was luckily it was a benign mass.
I'm going out to dinner tonight so I'll have to miss Tie Domi's pink stick debut on Broadway. Maybe next time.
I don't think anyone was making light of cancer btw... at least IMO. Pink sticks yes but not the cause.

Now Rusty bud you know better then that.
It's a very nice gesture by the players and I love it when things like this happen.
I didn't really notice any pink sticks. They did make mentiion of them after the game but they weren't obvious.
