Well registration has started up for Yahoo Fantasy Hockey, and since nobody has jumped on creating a league, I decided to do the deed  :thumb:

Anyways, here's the stuff:

League ID - 10335
Password - hockey

The scoring categories and draft time can change if any of you have complaints, but lets get this thing rolling :pimp:

========
From Mel: Not to stomp all over LFL's thread... but I guess he's cool with the idea of waiting till Setember 15 or so , and see how many people we get total... and then starting multiple leagues if the numbers warrant it.

So I'm gonna keep a list here of people who want in. please respond to this thread if you want in but haven't signed up yet.... this way we'll make room for every body.

Current members that want to participate in HS Yahoo Fantasy hockey...

13 managers are accounted for. Still don't know who Team Monster is though.

Any way, We'll update this as we get more names... and then see if it's worth it to split into 2 leauges (which I think it will be). To be fair to those who signed up early, we can give them fiist choice of staying in the original league (the one LFL set up) or splitting out to a different league if we have too many people. Late comers won't have a choice. Personally I don't mind which league I'm in.

So if you'd like to participate, respond to this thread so we get a head count. I think Sept. 15 is a good cut-off date but it's not just up to me, I can go with the flow.

J.R.'s OIL Legends will hit the ice in October 2005 for their inaugural fantasy hockey season.

Thanks A. Great turnout in just a few hours. Looking good, boys. The only thing that I notice that could be changed is only the 12 roster spots. As I mentioned, this is my first fantasy hockey season, so I don't know what's typical. Could that be increased?

I'm in as well. I'm going to a preseason game between the Wild and Panthers the day before, but I should be home in time the next day for the draft. It'll be my first year in a hockey fantasy league, so it should be interesting.

If enough people want the roster spots increased I'll do it, but for now I just left things with the Yahoo defaults.

Also, right now the I have the league set at a max of 10 teams, but I'll go as high as 14 if there's enough interest (probably will be).

Normally he would be the #1 or #2 RW in the league. He's always been the complete package when it comes to fantasy hockey.

But do you think the whole Moore incident will change his game?

If he plays with Naslund in a more offensive minded league I can't see his PT production doing anything but rise.
But seeing as he is going to be under a microscope from the officating you might not get allot of PIMS out of him, or you might get a ton.
Wow, there is so many ? players now in the new NHL now eh, how do you handicap them?
Still though Matty, if I were you I'd be taking Wayne Primeau with your first rounder...

:rollover2

seriously, your right it is tough to rank given that 1) we lost a whole year of track record 2) the rules of the game are changing.

I'm pretty much leaning towards youth and speed over aging vets, with a few exceptions. But Bert is still one of my top ranked RW's. He is still capable of being the full package. He's still going to be a top winger on a decent team in Vancouver. Even if he needs a "re-adjustment" time, I think he'll get his game back before long.

I think having 4 W instead of 2 LW, 2RW is better. Unless Yahoo! lists some players as both LW/RW, because there are plenty of players in the league that can move around from position to position.

J.R.
8-22-05, 4:15 PM
We're now at 12 teams, the current limit. I say bump it up to 16 and leave it at that as the final maximum.

Mel
8-22-05, 4:53 PM
ehhh, in my estimation... 16 teams is way too many for a fantasy hockey league. I played for 2 full years (2 teams each year - 1 roto, 1 head-to head), prior to the lockout season.

Think of it like this... each teams needs at least 2 goalies who start on a regular basis to be competitive. Most teams like to carry 3... Do the math real quick and you'll realize that there are not really enough decent goalies to go around even with 12 teams. I was in a 12 team league and there was one guy who, because of injury literally could not get a goal tender off the wire who played on a regular basis... even a crappy one! They were all taken and what was left was very occasional back-ups. He was begging for a trade for a goalie who was a #1 starter on a team just so he could make the weekly minimums, and not forfeit all his goalie stats each week.

With 16 teams, we are guaranteed to have this problem for at least several teams... not much fun to play for or against a team that has no goalies.

Leafs_Fa_Life
8-22-05, 5:56 PM
That's why 14 is as high as I'll go. If we have 16 teams there will be 2 teams in our league who might not get to the minimums every week, and gives their opponents 5 guaranteed victories. With 14 everybody should be able to get one decent starter, and then one second tier starter. Unless of course they put off drafting goalies until late in the draft, and in that case it's their fault.

Remember though, I'm a rookie. :) It makes total sense, because with 16 teams, then two teams aren't going to get two regular starters to fill the two goalie spots. Thanks for the explanation.

Is it a combination of crazy and drunk (http://crunk.urbanup.com/131038) or a specific type of hip hop music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunk)?

I always thought it was just another one of those damn ebonics terms.

Crunk is another word for Drunk. Crunk is commonly used by rappers for saying drunk. There is also a drunk called "crunk juice" , which is made of cogniac and red bull.

I could delete 7 managers, but I think 14 is a good number. Anything over that would be too much because of the goalie situation that Matt already addressed.

Both.

Crunk is a term for being drunk and high. However, in recent years many rappers from the Dirty South, most notably Lil' Jon, having started to call their music crunk music (possibly because they were on cocaine when they produced it :thumb: ). So both of your definitions are correct ;)

Mel

You know,we could wait to see how many we get total. It's only August 23rd. Plenty of time to form leagues. There's probably more than 14 of us who want to join. Let's set a deadline of say Sept. 15. We'll keep a running count in this thread. If we wind up with say 20 teams, we make 2 leagues of 10.... 24 teams we form 2 leagues of 12 etc. We can just set the max at 12 and the min at 8 and see what we wind up with... maybe 2 leauges of 8? 3 leagues of 10?

I still think 14 teams is realistically too many in fantasy hockey. Imagine your star goalie goes down for 3 months with an injury. And your other goalie falls into a start-splitting situation only getting every other game. You're third goalie is a backup who rarely gets a start).

I know what you're saying... just grab the injured goalie's backup. Well there's a good chance with 14 teams he may already be taken. In probability, there will be 42 goalies taken right off the bat, 3 per team. The first major injuries to a #1 goal tender, could decimate that team. Next thing you know you can't even reach the weekly minimum and you lose all your goalie stats for the week. As I said, I've seen it happen with 12 team leagues.... therefor I assume it's inevitable in a 14 team league (although I've never played FH with that many teams).

I'll give it a try at 14 if that's the concensus, but I think we'd be better off forming multiple leagues of 8, 10, or 12 max. 10-12 being ideal

Leafs_Fa_Life
8-23-05, 2:32 PM

We'll keep the list updated in the original post (http://www.hockeystation.com/showpost.php?p=16264&postcount=1) until Sept. 15 (or a different date if that doesn't suit you guys).

This way no one should miss the boat. We'll form extra league(s) if we get enough people. So if you want in just say the word. :)

There's not much to replace it with, except shots on goal and faceoffs. GWG doesn't bother me personally.

The top player in that category usually finishes with 12-14 GWG's per season. In other words, he averages .016 GWG per game. Pointless. :)

Awarding faceoffs won is an alright stat, but only appeals to players in the Center position.

Personally for me, less stats is better. For instance in our Fantasy Baseball, my head just spins at all the statistical categories. I mean, holds?!

I think shooting percentage (SH%) is a valuable stat. Benefits the less talented players in the league that don't put up points like Markus Naslund or Ilya Kovalchuk.

FW is problematic because of idiots in Dallas and Florida that don't know what a FW is.

GWG is a random stat ala Holds.

SH% is over too small of a period for fantasy hockey.

Personally..

Goals, Assists, +/-, PPP, SHP, SV%, Saves, Shutouts, GAA should be all we need.

SHP is in the same boat as GWG. Probably an even more useless statisic.

I don't mind SV%, but it just increases your point total if you happen to have a premier goaltender on your team. Saves is great because a goaltender like Biron, Luongo or Kolzig that have higher GAA than the average goaltender, will face a lot of shots night in and night out.

You forgetting Wins and PIM? Both important fantasy stats.

If people want to lose GWG or even SHP that's fine, but let's not start cutting out the basics. We should have at least 5 of each...

Offense: G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP

Goal: W, GAA, SV's, SV%, SO's

That's what we have now, minus GWG and SHP.

That's what we have now, minus GWG and SHP.My votes goes to those ten statistics.

Offense: G, A, +/-, and PPP are staples, so it's go to add the bonus PIM for drafting enforcers with some talent.

Goal: W, GAA, SV's, SV%, SO's - the W is the only question mark, but just be sure to pick a goalie on a winning team.

This is shaping together nicely.

but just be sure to pick a goalie on a winning team.

That's good for the Wins category, but it's not so clear for the others. One year I had Cloutier, his numbers were no better than average, but he piled up the wins for me because the Canucks won a lot of games that year.

But it can be deceiving, last year (03-04) I grabbed Esche on one of my rosters after Hackett went down (and eventually out). Esche gave me lots of wins, and an excellent, top-tier GAA. But then there would be those nights that the Flyers would have a 3-3 tie... but they only faced 16 shots, meanwhile at the other end you have someone like Luongo or Nurminen who faced 51 shots. Both guys gave up 3, so wins, GAA, and SO categories are equal. But who's the big winner on the night in saves and save percentage? ;)

When are we drafting anyway?

Sunday night is probably the most convenient simply because if there is any night where you're going to get a good turnout, it's Sunday. It is going to be hard to appease everyone, but if everyone can agree on a fixed date and time and stick to it, we'll be able to get it done and not have to worry about people dropping out :thumb:

That is unless we end up with an odd number of participants. But if people are willing to drop out because of other commitments, then that's fine, because it reduces the total number of teams. And the more I think about the goaltending situation the more I agree that the final number should be 10 or 12 teams.

I think I want to bail. I think 14 teams is too many based on past experience.

But I don't want to leave you guys hanging with an odd number of teams... so I'll only bounce if someone wants to do it with me, knocking the league down to 12 teams total.

I already have 2 other teams, so I don't mind stepping down here. But like I said, I'll stay if need be... no harm in it.Ok, I'm with ya Mel, I have too much on my plate. combined I'm in 10 pool, (Hockey, Football, Soccer) :thumb: I'll delete when and if this is a go with you. I too don't want to leave this group hanging.

OK Amo. Let's do it.

I'm going to remove myself now. You guys should be left w/ 12 teams. Good luck to all. :)

Edit: I had mentioned my roster from another team... but I don't want to clog up your league thread.

so I made a dedicated thread to roster discussion and advice.

Definitely not cool ;)

I forgot to change the max teams to 12 after Mel and Amo left, because I thought interest in the league had died and nobody else would try joining. Anyways, if somebody else wants to join to make it even again feel free. If not I'll have to delete your team cbc :(

I didn't want to screw the league... but I thought 14 was too many teams for NHL fantasy.

That's why I looked for a partner (Amo) to leave. If you guys still want 14, and are in a jam to get the 14th team... I'll jump back in just to help out. Or maybe Amo would as well. Just let it be known here if you need more teams.

LIke I said earlier... I don't mind participating if it will keep the amount of teams even and help the league. Otherwise, I'll pass it on to someone else who wants in. :)

Is multiple leagues an option?

GAH! I knew I was forgetting something last night. I planned to be at the draft. Now I see what Yahoo! automatically drafted for me. WTF? Owen Nolan? Kenny Jonsson? And to make matters worse my starting goalies are Turco and Lalime. :curse:

I expect to be in the basement of the standings for most of the season. I won't miss a fantasy draft again.

The top 2 teams in the HS Fantasy league have been facing each other all week.

The 1st place Toronto Maple Leafs and the 2nd place Team Monsters soon head to the 3rd with the Leafs having a sight edge at 5-3, but in the new game, no lead is safe.

Now with the call of the 3rd period, Bob Cole and Harry Neal ;)

I protest and would like to see the tiebreaker rules. Me and JR tied and he got tomove on while I get to batle for 5th place. If they have a legit reasno as to why he moved on that's fine, but if it's cause of some BS reason like he had more goals, that's gay.

In the event that a playoff game ends in a tie, the deadlock will be broken using the following system:

Most team goals.
Most team assists.
Lowest team GAA.
Highest team SV%.
Most team wins.
Most team shutouts.
Most team powerplay points.
Most team game-winning goals.
Most team penalty minutes.
Most team plus/minus.
Random "coin flip." I'm not kiddin, this is there in the rules.* If a team does not meet the minimum goalie games requirement used in the league, they will automatically lose any tiebreakers goalie statistics.
