MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Kirby Puckett died Monday, a day after the Hall of Fame outfielder had a stroke at his Arizona home, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was 44.
Puckett died at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Scottsdale, Ariz., Kimberly Lodge said. He had been in intensive care since having surgery at another hospital following his stroke Sunday morning.
Puckett carried the Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991 before his career was cut short by glaucoma. His family, friends and former teammates gathered at the hospital throughout Monday.
"On behalf of Major League Baseball, I am terribly saddened by the sudden passing of Kirby Puckett," baseball commissioner Bud Selig said. "He was a Hall of Famer in every sense of the term.
"He played his entire career with the Twins and was an icon in Minnesota. But he was revered throughout the country and will be remembered wherever the game is played. Kirby was taken from us much too soon - and too quickly," he said.

I heard about his stroke, but I didn't think it was this serious. RIP Kirby.

11th inning game 6 1991 World Series, Puckett swings, Jack Buck says "We'll see you tomorow night folks". One of my favourite baseball memories. RIP Kirby!

Kirby was one of the main reasons I ever watched the Minnesota Twins. He really was a great guy, both on and off the field, and was one of my role models as a young kid. He will be missed by many people, baseball fans or not.

The 1991 World Series was one of the best I've ever seen, and he was a big reason why. Thanks for the memories Kirby.

I loved watching Kirby. He didn't look like your typical BB player but could fly around the bases faster than most.

RIP Kirby.

I really enjoyed watching Kirby play.
Always smiling, always playing hard.
Appreciated what he had . . .the ability to play a game he loved, for a living.

He was loved by baseball fans everywhere.

RIP Kirby.

Fox Sports Radio last night had about 4 hours of people calling in and sharing their memories of Kirby. It's amazing how many different people he touched, from Twins fans to baseball fans to just everyday people. Some of the stories I heard last night made me remember what a great role model he was. Today's professional athletes should all take a few pages from Kirby's book. The TO's, Ron Artest's, and Barry Bonds' of the sports world could all express the same humility and appreciation for their chance to play sports that Kirby did. I doubt we'll see another player, or person like Kirby Puckett again. He will be truly missed.

A sad day for baseball. One of the true greats is gone much too early just as his career was forced to end early.

Too young to retire in more ways than one. :(

Rest In Peace, big guy.
