View Full Version : Presidents Trophy
Simple enough... top 5 teams in each conference.
I gotta go with the Wings... excellent team feasting on a weak division.

Yep the Wings should win it. Carolina will give them a run.
Ottawa has a butter soft schedule to finish the season. I'll take them to the bank.

Agreed. "Ottawa has 3 steaight wins, but all against inferior oppisition" is what I keep hearing from networks like TSN and SN. It's going to be heard alot from now until mid-April, so get used to it. And it doesn't taint our success one bit, as the networks try and make it seem. We just had our hard opponents in the 1st half. And I'll tell you waht, I don't lowly Washington doesn't beat 7-1 that often for what it's worth.....
Emery may be the only thing stopping us from the President's Trophy. But Hasek will be back eventally and Razor looked alright last night. I think the boys have it in hand if they play up to their full potential from now in. If they're doing that, there's just no way we don't pick up tons of points over these "easy" clubs down the stretch. We already got the 2nd best W% as it is.

Carolina or Detroit. We shouldn't be mentioned, we can't win a game right now.

Detriot in a very easy division or Ottawa with the opponents they have left. I took Detriot just because Hasek is out.

Ottawa will finish the season with a 17 - 5 record over the final 22 games

The only team I was worried about in the east was Carolina but the injury to Cole IMO is a massive blow. He has everything to do with Stall success and IMO is hugely underrated on this team. This will go down to the line with Ottawa and Detroit now

Red Wings
Other than Buffalo 4 times, I was very pleased with Ottawa's schedual. Admittedly, most teams we face are at the very least competitive and capable of beating anyone on any given night. But for the most part, it's an easy schedual to finish the season in Hockey Country. Sure, it seems we're always playing either a back-to-back or our third game in four nights, but every team has a cramped schedual thanks to the Olympics (Ottawa's is just a bit worse thanks to extended lay-offs in October).
However, I took a look at Detroit's remaining opponents. Mama-mia! They get CBJ 3 more times, the Blues 2 more times, and the Hawks two more times. 7 more wins, and 14 more points should be had for free. But since hockey is played on the ice and not paper, let's say 10. Judging by today's standings, they only face another playoff team from now until season's end 7 times (less than 40% of their remaining games). I change my vote. The Red Wings are my pick for the President's Throphy......... quite possibly by a noticeable margin.

I predict an 11-3 finish to the season

Yep. But were the first team to hit 100 points. =]
My money's still on Detroit though. Ottawa still has to play Buffalo three more times, along with tilts against Philly, New Jersey, and New York (Rangers). We get Washington and Florida once more. Other than that every team we face is a playoff team. This excludes Toronto and Atlanta but they're both just on the the outiside looking in and on a bit of roll. That covers the rest of our season, other than a mid-April tilt with the Bruins. You'd think it'd be one of those "should win" games, but they've given us the most trouble/losses this season of all 30 NHL clubs.
Injuries to Havlat, Hasek, and Fisher hurt our cause even more to get the President's Trophy. And now Volchenkov is out too, though he may be back in time for Friday as what was thought to be a concussion has now been diagnosed as just beeing "woozy" after a hard hit.
Detroit? Fairly healthy and being fed a steady diet of Central Division games.....

Well unless Detroit goes on a crazy losing streak it looks to be all but theirs. If not for Ottawa?s crazy injury woes I?d say this would have gone to the last few games.

I agree with that. After tonight's game in Calgary, Detroit will enjoy a 3 day rest followed by a home/home with Columbus. They also have St. Louis and Chicago lined up to finish out the season.
Since February 1st, Detroit has only lost 2 games in regulation (5 overall). I don't see Ottawa gaining 5 points on them with only a handful of games left to play.
