WINNIPEG (CP) - Lee Goren's power-play goal at 2:35 of overtime helped the Manitoba Moose to a 3-2 victory over the St. John's Maple Leafs and a 3-1 lead in the North Division semifinal.
Peter Sarno set up Goren standing off to the right of the net and he slammed in the puck with 40 seconds remaining in the major penalty to St. John's defenceman Joel Kiatkowski. Kiatkowski was assessed a five minute high-sticking major on Jesse Schultz at 18:15 of the third period and the penalty carried into overtime. Clarke Wilm scored both Maple Leafs goals and Josh Green and Nathan Smith replied for Manitoba.
The Maple Leafs controlled the game for the first seven minutes of the opening period, but it was the Moose who took a 1-0 lead when winger Alexandre Burrows raced down the right side and fed a centring pass to Smith who slid the puck under netminder Mikael Tellqvist at 8:47. Maple Leafs' defenceman Ian White set up Wilm directly in front and he spun around backhanding the puck along the ice between Wade Flaherty's legs to tie the game 1-1 going into the second period.
The teams played a scoreless second with Manitoba outshooting the Leafs 17-6. With eight seconds remaining in the middle frame, Manitoba's Sarno broke into the clear, skated right in on goal and fired the puck high off Tellqvist's shoulder. Just 16 seconds into the third period St. John's forward Matt Stajan gained control of the puck behind the Moose net and set up an unguarded Wilm directly in front and he blasted the puck off Flaherty's right shoulder and into the net to give the visitors their first lead of the game.
The Moose struck at 12:11 to tie the game at two after Green scored from directly in front after Nolan Baumgartner shot the puck in from the left point and Justin Morrison tapped the puck back to Green for his third goal of the series. The fiesty Maple Leafs were assessed nine of 13 penalties in regulation time as the Moose once again demonstrated self discipline. In 11 games this season between the Leafs and Moose, eight in the regular season and three in the play-offs, neither team has won two games in a row.
