Finally some activity! I think this is a good move for the Oil. He's not been having a season as good of a season as he has in the past, but that doesn't change the fact that Edmonton finally has a real netminder. A weak draft, I don't think the price was too high. Not for a team like the Oil who have had notorious problems in the crease. Teams like Ottawa chasing simply insurance in net wouldn't have been well advised to give up a 1st round selection and a conditional 3rd rounder (pending on whether or not he re-signs in Edmonton).

I'm somewhat surprised he was traded in the North West though.....

Edmonton's No. 1: Roloson an Oiler
TSN.ca Staff
The Edmonton Oilers have a new No. 1 netminder, acquiring Dwayne Roloson from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a first round pick and a conditional draft pick.

The conditional pick is a third rounder if Roloson re-signs with Edmonton.

The Wild were rumoured to be shopping off one of their goalies, and Roloson was the odd man out after the team re-signed Fernandez to a multi-year contract last week.

"I think it means that they think they can win the Cup," Roloson's agent Mark Witkin said from Boston.

Newfie John
3-08-06, 4:06 PM
Eklund predicted that earlier today that Roloson would go to the Oilers for a first and a third. Looks like he's getting more and more accurate as time goes on. I hate how Roloson is going to the Oilers though, that was one of Belfour's possible destinations. Oh well, maybe Vancouver will bite since apparently they're interested(which doesn't make sense to me but oh well).

Madferret
3-08-06, 4:10 PM
Good for Oiler fans, they got their goalie finally. Did they move one of their goalies yet? They have 4 now don't they?

MadDevil
3-08-06, 4:11 PM
Interesting move by both teams. I'm kind of surprised that the Wild traded within the division, but Roloson may end up being nothing more than a rental for the Oilers anyway. I don't know if he would normally be worth a 1st and a 3rd (if it does come down to that), but considering the Oilers' goaltending situation, I think it's a decent enough move.

I don't think it really improves the Oilers' chances at being a Cup contender though...

If Roloson can carry the Oil deep into the playoffs and plays well for them then the trade was good.
From how he's played this year he's not worth that for a rental and no way they sign him until he's proven himself. To me it's too high but I guess it was a gamble trade.
I'm thinking the oilers didn't want to be the last person without a chair when the music stopped so they upped the anti. Especially with their goaltending situation

TimmyTabasco

No thanks to Belfour

I'd rather acquire Toskala..and would give up a 1st round pick

Max Power
3-08-06, 5:04 PM
Belfour is not going anywhere IMO
As much as I think he would step up his game I don't think any team wants a questionable 42 year old goalie @5 million
Unless he waives his no trade without the contract extension but then the team is still responsible for 1.5 on next seasons cap to buy him out

Well we all expected Ottawa to make a huge spalsh so here it is....

Bulletin: Senators sign defenceman Brad Norton to NHL contract

(03/08/2006)
OTTAWA ? The Ottawa Senators today signed defenceman Brad Norton to a one-year, two-way NHL contract. Norton, 31, was previously under contract with the Binghamton Senators, the club?s American Hockey League affiliate. This is Norton?s first NHL contract with the Ottawa Senators and, following NHL rules, he has cleared waivers and will remain in Binghamton.

The left-handed shooter played 26 games with the B-Sens this season, recording four assists and 73 penalty minutes. The Binghamton Senators claimed Norton off waivers from the AHL? Grand Rapids Griffinson Dec. 20, 2005.

Norton began the 2005-06 season with the professional club Jokerit Helsinki in Finland where he tallied two goals, two assists and 93 penalty minutes in 20 games.

In 111 career NHL games, the defenceman has accumulated 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and 236 penalty minutes. He has also tallied 58 points (nine goals, 49 assists) and 487 penalty minutes in 210 AHL games with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Hershey Bears and Binghamton.

The Cambridge, Mass., native was named to the PlanetUSA squad at the 2000 AHL All-Star Classic in Rochester, N.Y., while he was a member of the Bulldogs. Norton was Edmonton?s ninth choice, 215th overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.

Leafs have made their huge splash.

To Toronto- Luke Richardson
To Columbus - 5th round pick

Richardson is solid defensively so its a decent move and it improves our depth on defence. No more Belak on D.

So the Leafs chose an Ottawa boy eh..
IIR John, Luke stepped down as captain of the Jackets as he was constantly being called out for not being able to play in the 'new' NHL. Nonetheless, it is a huge upgrade over the 3 AHLers on the Leafs blueline. Guess JFJ isn't a seller quite yet..

Capitals won't dress Witt against Pens
Brendan Witt

TSN.ca Staff

3/8/2006 5:15:39 PM

The Washington Capitals are erring on the side of caution with Brendan Witt.

Virtually certain to be traded by the Caps before Thursday's 3pm et deadline, Washington will keep the defenceman out of Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins as a precaution.

It is possible Witt could be traded Wednesday night - many teams, including the Nashville Predators are working hard to acquire him - but there is also an excellent chance the trade won’t happen until Thursday.

In any case, Witt will sit out as a healthy scratch amid rumours of his immient departure.

Now things are starting to pick up, thank you K Lowe for getting the ball rolling..

Newfie John
3-08-06, 6:54 PM
Everyone knew Witt would be traded. I'd give it a 100% chance of him moving. An 80% chance of Friesen going.

Same as my other post.. but anyway..

... finally. Amen.

We gave up a first. Big whoop, this draft sucks outside the top 5 or so. Think 2002.

Roloson is used to not facing many shots.. many people are saying how will he play without the trap? Oilers are 2nd in the league in shots against.

Roloson is currently 13th in the league in SV%, at .910%. Will that translate perfectly? God no, but it should be pretty close. To put that into perspective, the Oilers have allowed 192 goals on 1579 shots.. that's a SV% of 0.878. Roughly, with Roloson, that means we'd have allowed about fifty less goals... which would put us right around first in the league in GA. That's how good our defense has been (shots against) and how amazingly bad our goaltending has been.

This will have a HUGE impact on our team if Roloson can keep his play right around there. Better yet, the guy is a Canuck killer, does have playoff experience, and is consistent. He's the answer.. he's not amazing by any means, but he is very solid. That'll let our players take some chances, give them some confidence in the guy in net.. man this is huge. Go Oilers. Good job Lowe.

This is such a stupid move, I knew that yesterday's win would give JFJ false hope. Maybe MLSE has told him make the playoffs or find a new job, because clearly this move makes no sense. Why would you trade 2 draft picks for a guy to basically come over and play out the season? Babcock Jr. is really starting to destroy any confidence I have in his abilities.

I'm happy with this even if it's just depth. What it really does is, or what it should IMO, is bump Thompson down to Bingo again and Morrison him as our backup (3rd string but as everyone knows Hasek is out).

He may veyr well get some starts in Binghamton as soon as Hasek is healthy. Thompson/Guard don't form an intimidating duo down there and have been splitting duties with neither being able to establish themselves as a #1. Though Jeff Glass will likely go to the A next year, he's currently playing an important part in his development down in the ECHL where he's facing lots of shots and was an all-star.

I'm not saying he's going to be a bust, but if Lou hasn't given him a full-time spot on the big club by now, it usually means there's something behind the scenes going on. Of course, Lou is a hard-ass when it comes to players playing "Devils hockey".

To be honest, Suglobov wasn't going to be given a spot on the roster anytime soon, and a trade to a Toronto team that is rebuilding will probably help him out. Besides, with Parise, Zajac, and Bergfors, the Devils aren't really giving up the future.

Some would argue that Lou has lost his mind since the cap was brought in. He just traded his second best prospect(behind Parise) for a guy who has been very disappointing this year. Hey it's not 3 yet anything could happen dude maybe you'll get your wish(s)..

Good move by the Sens. Bochenski is a hit-or-miss prospect, while Arnason helps out the Sens at center (although I think he can play the wing as well).

That evens up the trade a bit more. I gauruntee though, Bo will amount to nothing unless they find an extremly good center to play him with.

There was a Toronto deal that didn't make it a few years ago, because of a jammed fax machine. It would have sent Hoglund to Boston. Don't remember who was coming back in return. Whoever it was it would have been an improvement.

Didn't that happen with Lindros coming from Philly?

Anyways, in my opinion, besides the Klee trade, JFJ didn't impress me. Like honestly, what is he waiting for, clearly this team can't win by switching Klee for Richardson.

Now that I've had some time to think about Lou's moves this trade deadline, I'm not quite so upset. Lukowich was the addition that I liked the most. He's a solid all-around defenseman who's been through the playoff battles before. Matvichuk is also out with an injury, and I think Lukowich can step in and replace him until Matty gets back. Klee is an upgrade over Brown, and is more experienced than Hale, which is obviously a plus. The Devils now have a very solid, deep group of defensemen to use down the stretch and into the playoffs.

The trade for Wiemer doesn't look like anything huge (and it probably won't be), but they get a bigger forward who can throw his body around and drop the gloves when necessary. He's also solid defensively from what I've heard (not sure if that's true or not), and is another guy who has been through pretty much everything.

I think the lineup is more balanced now than it was before, with more options on defense. Pretty good moves, and they basically just give up Suglobov and a 3rd for Lukowich, Klee, and Wiemer (they got a 4th from Vancouver for Brown and sent one to Calgary for Wiemer).

I wouldn't have minded adding a scorer, but judging from what ended up happening at the deadline, it looks like a second line scorer would have cost a top pick or Ahonen/Zajac/Bergfors, and I really like what Zajac and Bergfors can bring to the table in the future. Lou didn't really sacrifice the future for the present, so I'd say it was a pretty solid deadline.
