View Full Version : Defenceman Elimination

You can sign one out of each pair of the following defensemen to a 4 year deal. Which one would it be?
40 defensemen have been split into pairs.
Some of the players are a contrast to one another while other pairings have very similar players. Some mirror decisions NHL GM's will have to make themselves this summer. Some of the pairings start with two players that under the right circumstances could both be finalists. So there will be some very good players lost in the first round.
Roughly every day or so the player with the least votes from each pair will be eliminated. After the first round, just for convenience, the winner of the top pair will face the winner of the bottom pair, and so on. 2nd vs 2nd last etc.
At the end of the second round the two players who have received the most votes will get a bye, through the third round.
Some of the choices look tough. I'll be tossing a coin on atleast one of them.
Appologies for anybody's favorite I missed.
Which one of the two players per pair would you want to sign for a 4 year deal?

A few surprises. Mainly by how much some of the guys got beat.
Zubov and McCabe got shutout completely.
Gone are some of the elite D-men in the league.
Total concensus that the Leafs signed the right guy before the Olympics.
Zdeno wins the King of Parliament Hill.
Phaneuf takes the Battle of Alberta.
Lidstrom and Gonchar got bounced hard.
Good Stuff.
Round 2 will be posted momentarily.

I'm going to change this a little bit. :D
Instead of the top two vote getters getting a bye through the next round, there will be a wild card elimination.
At the conclusion of this round two players who have already been eliminated will be given a chance to be put back in the elimination.
Just pick your top two players out of the 30 who will, at the conclusion of this round, have already been eliminated. Top two vote getters will go back into the elimination.
There will be a random re-seeding of players, at that point, for the next round.

I used the first round votes to break the tie between Hannan and Boynton.
Hannan(10 votes) gets to advance over Boynton(8 votes).
OK Time to pick the two Wild Card players that get to come back into the Elimination.
Pick Two players out of those already eliminated. Top two vote getters rejoin the Elimination.

Missed the vote, but I would've taken Pitkanen over Phaneuf. I've never bought into Phaneuf as the "next king D in the NHL" proclamations. Pitkanen is almost Norris calibre already and I expect him to make a strong challange next year. Regardless of how good he can and likely will be, Dion still has trouble hitting net.......

Hard to believe Neidermayer is older than Pronger. It seems like Pronger has been around forever. His physical play, was also a factor in my decision.

Seriously though, that and the Chara/Phaneuf picks were the two toughest ones to make. I give Niedermayer a very slight edge over Pronger, but it's damn close.

I'm not one to care much about the Hart and tropies of it's ilk, but the fact tha he's the only defenseman to win it since Orr should speak volumes of his play :thumb: . I think it's extremely close as well, but given Pronger's offensive game is one of the most under-rated in the league (given, how many people to hear you mention his offensive #'s? Even though they're almost identicle to Nieds every year.) and that he's bigger and eats more minutes, I give him the edge.
Nieds skating is unreal though.

Since I wanted three Defensmen to move on to the All-Star Elimination, we have to get rid of one more. So I will move them both onto the next round, but the next round will be a round-robin style. Top three vote getters move on to the All-Star Elimination, while the top Two go on to the final Defensman Elimination round.

On a 4 year deal, Chara.
To have on my team for now, Niedermayer.

When the Stuff hits the fan, this guy can simply ragdoll 99.9% of the league.
Niedermayer. The best defenseman in the league right now IMO, and the only man I'd take over Z for 4.

Neidermayer 4

We haven't had more than 13 voters for one round so I think we can give it to Chara with 7.
Who would have thought, Chara would be voted the most sought after D-man in the NHL. Atleast here at HS, anyway.
If his agent gets hold of this, the Alfie Cap will get shattered. If the majority of us would want him over Neidermayer, just what kind of bidding war is this guy going to generate as a free agent?
Congratulations Zdeno Chara for winning the First ever Hockey Station D-man Elimination!
Your prize will be delivered, as soon as I get some tickets to a Sens game. Oh, and I'll need a hotel to stay at, while I'm in Ottawa. Take care of that for me, will ya Big Z.
Chara, Neidermayer and Phaneuf will all be in the All-Star Elimination, coming soon.
