Hasek injured in Olympic opener
TSN.ca Staff
Goaltender Dominik Hasek suffered a leg injury in the game between the Czech Republic and Germany Wednesday at the Olympics.
The injury occurred at 9:25 of the first period. No further details of the incident have been released but early indications are his return to the game is questionable.
Hasek has been replaced by Nashville Predators goaltender Tomas Vokoun.
It has not been a memorable start to the Winter Games for Hasek. The Ottawa Senators netminder arrived in Italy Monday to find that his equipment had been lost by the airline en route to the Games. He was forced to borrow some equipment from former Buffalo Sabres goaltender coach Jim Corsi, who is working with the Italian national team.
Lovely..

I was just going to post this
All I have to say is figures... We were all saying if the guy was serious about winning the cup he should skip the Olympics.
Hope it’s not serious
ADD - I guess it may not as bad as first reported... Supposedly he's back on the bench
Big sigh of relief in Sens nation if true

Well, he has left the bench.
Hopefully the injury is not too serious.
If Hasek had to pull a groin, this is the best case scenario - early in the tournament.
Even if he misses the rest of the Olympics all together... that's 2 weeks where he wasn't missing any games for Ottawa. So there's the bright side.
(ESPN is speculating that its a groin)

At first they were reporting he was hit by a puck but then they changed it to he looked in pain after spreading his legs to make a save.
If the second is accurate then you?re probably right and it is a groin pull
Hopefully it?s not serious but with Haseks history it?s hard to be optimistic

Rumors are now circulating that it's a Hamstring and Hasek is going for an MRI

...and for Sens fans I guess it's a double gift. Canada won't have to play him and there'd be no hope of him aggrevating the injury further.

I gotta think a lot of GM's/Owners look at this tournament with concern.
These guys are playing at a high level where injuries are possible.
And this is occurring right in the middle of the NHL season.
If I were paying millions of dollars, I would want my player's full focus to be part of my team . . .not their country's team.
That being said, I love the fact that NHLers are playing in the Olympics . . .it should be the best players in the world .
But why not have the Olympic hockey tournament at the Summer games, where an injury would not have as big an impact on the team paying their salary.
I mean the B-ball tournie is played in the Summer . . . the NBA does not take time out in its schedule to go to the Olympics.

I read today that the extent of the injury might keep him from playing alot during the Olympics, but that it shouldn't keep him on the shelf in terms of playing for the Sens.

Hasek sidelined by adductor injury
TSN.ca Staff
Sources tell TSN that Czech goaltender Dominik Hasek has suffered an adductor injury that has sidelined him for Thursday's game against Switzerland.
An MRI exam Wednesday night revealed the injury, which is related to the groin muscle.
Team doctors will know how serious the injury is in a couple of days and the team's physiotherapist says there is a "30-40 percent chance" he will play again in the Olympics. However, the injury should not affect his season with the Ottawa Senators.
After Thursday's game, the team takes Friday off, then plays again Saturday and Sunday.

You tried Dom, just let Vokoun take over and you just rest now..
Huge sign of relief from Ottawa! Thank the Lord! :relief Just let Vokoun take it from here, Dom. Though I think it's clear just how important his skills and just overall aura are to any team, with the Czechs losing today to the Swiss today being further proof, he has to sit it out now. Ottawa gave him a chance knowing he was injury prone but after this scare has the right to step in IMO>
In a perfect world I'd love to see Hasek in there backstopping the Czechs to the silver medal (losing to Canda in the final) and putting up another Nagano-esque performance. Then, carry that momentum to become all but unbeatable in the Ottawa net, despite already being among the top 3 NHL netminders. But this is reality and we need Hasek 100% focused and rested for the playoffs. Skipping the Olympics after pulling a muscle is key in that.

Hasek is heading back home today so that's good.
I don't know how good it is.
They were saying the word "GROIN" a lot when referring to Hasek this morning.
Mucks said "if Hasek cannot go, we'll stick with our current back-up"
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Looking ahead, we have 12 days before our first game in Pittsburgh, followed the next night with a home game against the Caps . . .then Saturday at the Leafs.
So I'm thinking Hasek can have 15 or 16 days to rest before taking the reigns again.
Also, down the stretch, let's get Emery(or some-other traded for back-up) in as much as possible to rest Hasek for our Stanley Cup run.
This means that EVERYONE will have to pick their game up a notch.
Heatly, Spezza . . .I'm talkin to you!!!

Groin is incorrect from what I've heard. It's the aductor, which is in that area and IIRC may even come in contract with the groin. But the groin itself is not the problem, which is good.
Lip service from Muckler IMO in regards to the netminding. If he says otherwise he'll automatically deal from a position of weakness if he does have to make a trade. And you're already painted in a corner with your starter out and no bonafide alternative present. It could also be bad for Razor's confidence.
Finally, I think Razor would be good enough for the regular season provided he gets back on his horse. As we saw earlier in the year, Emery when on his game and getting support is at the very least adequate. But I wouldn't trust any rookie goalie as far as I can throw them come the playoffs, let alone one as inconsistant as the one we have. And that's a potential problem for a team wanting to win now.
This means that EVERYONE will have to pick their game up a notch.
Heatly, Spezza . . .I'm talkin to you!!!
Amen! With games against Pittsburgh and Washington, it should be a nice way to ease back into the NHL again too. However, we do have 3 games in 4 nights once the season resumes. And that schedualing theme in consitant from here on until April - weak opposition, but very difficult spacing between games.

Ottawa Senators star goalie Dominik Hasek is holding a news conference on Tuesday to reveal the extent of the injury he suffered at the Torino Olympics while playing for the Czech Republic.
Hasek left the men's hockey competition at the Winter Games after pulling his groin while making a splits save just six minutes into last Wednesday's game against Germany.

Quote from another board
He said it'd be at least 10 days until he gets onto the ice. Longer to play.
He said, "there is no strength in the particular muscle".
So, it's not serious and he's not going to rush it.

Sens unsure of when Hasek will return
Canadian Press
OTTAWA (CP) - The Ottawa Senators are giving no timetable for Dominik Hasek's return.
The team says it will be cautious with its top goaltender, who made an early return from the Torino Games after suffering an injury in the Czech Republic's first Olympic match.
Hasek suffered a mild strain of an upper right thigh muscle.
The team said there's a chance Hasek could return to the lineup in time for the Senators' first post-Olympic match in Pittsburgh on March 1. But there's also a chance he could be out for much longer.
Hasek has posted 28 wins for Ottawa this season, with a goals-against average of 2.09 and a stellar .925 save percentage.
So....anyone hear what Mucks plans to do?

Sounds like mucks is playing this one close to his chest.
I don't like the sound of it.
I wonder if Biron would be available to a same-division opponent.
If so, at what price.
What about Toskala is San Jose ?
I guess if Hasek is going to get injured . . .better now than later.
At least we have a chance to set someone before March 9th.
Cujo in Ottawa ??
Wouldn't that be sweet having Cujo and Dom on the same team again ?

So in a nut shell who knows what will happen with Hasek. He could be fine in a month or he could be out for the season. with only a few weeks until the deadline this sure puts the Sens cup future on the line. Not to say we can?t go all the way with Emery but the odds have significantly lessened if Muckler gambles and sticks with what we have in hopes of Haskes return

I have to say, I have been waiting for this to happen all season.
Every time I see Hasek get run, or a scramble in front of the net, or a spectacular sprawling save . . .I cringe.
Is this going to be the one ??
Every game he played, I breathed a sigh of relief when it was over.
Because of his style of play, his advanced age, and playing time, I figured it was not IF but WHEN would Hasek get hurt.
Do we try for a #1 goalie ?
Well, if Hasek gets better . . .we know the end of that story.
Do we try for a back-up ?
Well, if Hasek does not mend . . .then we go into the playoffs with two back-ups.
A platoon situation, I don't think so.
While that might work in the regular season, I don't think it can work in the playoffs.
I wouldn't want to be in Mucks shoes right now.
You know, which ever way he goes, unless we have a parade . . . he will be second guessed by us, by the media, by the team

It would be nice to make our team better without subtracting.
Did any of you guys hear what the actual injury is? If it's still just a strain, I'm not looking at any trade options that need to see us give up sizeable variables in return.
Hope it's nothing big. That's really all we can do as fans. On one hand, you think it's serious due to the conference even being called. On the other, we all knew he was to be re-evalueated and this just may be their doctors given their opinion to the [u]Canadian public. If the injury was serious, you could only assume the Sens wouldn't have revealed the info this close to the trade deadline. The cost of a replacement would triple.
I heard a press conference was today around 11:00 but assumed Hasek's status was still as was, and the announcement would be made Havlat had no hopes of returning due to aggravating the shoulder when stepping up the exercises in rehab. I almost wish that was the case, if this is worse than first thought.

I think a guy like Biron might be a good median. He?s good enough that if needed he could come through for us but if Hasek gets better Hasek is the clear #1.
Either way this is a real tough position for Muckler.
charlio lemieux
2-21-06, 3:20 PM
For a short term solution Joseph is the cheapest #1 available. He could also fill in come playoff time, and should only cost prospects or draft picks.
Toskala would be a great pick up but with his pre Olympic performance, and the immediate needs of San Jose, he will likely cost a roster player or a top prospect. He might be worth giving up 1st and 2nd Rnd picks for, but I really think SJ wants some immediate help to make the playoffs.
Raycroft and Biron may not get serious consideration due to them being in the same Division and potential Playoff opponents.

When Muckler signed Hasek he must have known something like this was bound to happen. Mucker is smart, he must have a plan B. If it's letting Emery carry the load, that's stupid. Like I said though, Muckler is smart.
Redden & / or Chara are pretty good trade bait if needed..
Isn't Chara coming up on UFA this summer? He's not worth much unless he signs a contract.
You know he'd look pretty good on Broadway
I don't think it's out of the question Weekes would be available. He made a Cup run once. And he's getting squeezed out in NY by Henrik Lundqvist

The more I think about this the worse it sounds.
"Of course I'm worried, I'll be honest," the 41-year-old said as he met with reporters for the first time since returning from the Turin Games, where he strained a groin-area muscle in the first period of the Czech Republic's opening game last week.
"But on the other hand, I want to do all the best to get on the ice as soon as possible, and I hope I can be in the same shape I was during the season," he added. "But I have to admit, I am worried. It's a difficult situation for me."
He is worried. Uh-oh! This is a man who understands groin injuries. When he says "it is a difficult situation for (him)" it makes me wonder if he has had to atleast consider calling it a season.
It was already said that even if it was really bad, they would hush it up to avoid getting fleeced in a trade for a goalie.
I don't like the sounds of this.
Hopefully he will be ok.

I would imagine, one way or another, Dom is only here for one year.
If he wins a cup with the Sens, he will probably retire OR ask for a raise.
Who wants to pay a 42 year old goaltender big$$$$ ?
If he is badly injured, he might retire.
Either way I don't think Razor is ready to jump into a starting roll.(if ever)
It's amazing how some goalies can prove themselves as starters (Miller, Thomas, Lundquist)
Whereas our guy(Emery), who is supposed to be the next great goaltender has not stood out, so far.
Maybe he needs more work.
Well get ready, Ray, I believe you're about to get more work than you ever thought possible.
What about Kevin Weekes? He's a legit #1, but Lundqvist is stealing the show in NYC.
After a brief slump, Weekes has looked strong in his last 3 starts - all wins.
The Rangers have their stud in Lundqvist, and Al Montoya is coming along nicely (top 5 GAA in the AHL), so Weekes could be available and coveted by a strong Cup contender who suddenly found themselves in need of a goalie. Hmmmmmm.... :conspire:

Honestly I think he'd be a good solution for Ottawa, if Dom is really gone. I think that he's under-rated. Look at the last 2 seasons on what was a crappy Carolina team....
03-04 : 66 games, 6 SO, 2.33 GAA, .912 SV%
02-03 : 51 games, 5 SO, 2.55 GAA, .912 SV%
But the main reason I'd have an interest if I was Ottawa... Weekes has shown he can excel in the playoffs.
2002 : 8 games, 2 SO, 11 goals allowed, 1.62 GAA, .939 SV%
For argument's sake let's say the Rangers did make him available... I think he's one of your best options.
And this is Ottawa's year. They just need steady goal tending and they'll be real tough to stop. Next year? who knows.

I agree with you Melly I'm just saying Weekes is hopefully Ottawa's Option 5 at the moment. There are a couple of other goalies available or potentially available that I would Rather see Muckler pursue first.

Whereas our guy(Emery), who is supposed to be the next great goaltender has not stood out, so far.

Well get ready, Ray, I believe you're about to get more work than you ever thought possible.
Thomas and Lundqvist were clearly more advanced than Razor, whie Miller came off that great AHL campaign. Hence, nobody should be particularily surprised but that's Emery fault for not equaling those performances.
He definatly needs more work, but most young goalies do. He needs consistancy more than anything at this stage of his career IMO. We'll see what happens with him in the future, but we need to win now and as of today I don't think he's good enough. Does anybody? Did anybody? He's a rookie......
Let's remember, Emery was never supposed to be of starting calibre this year. And that now poses a big problem. Hasek got hurt like everyone was praying against, and now Razor needs to be huge. Playing as expected just isn't enough in the #1 role for us. I think the kid can hold the fort for a while (espcially if he gets hot) but if Dom is out for a really long time we're pooched...... barring a trade. I'd hate to be Muckler right now.
