WTF? 5.45 a year for Kolzig? I mean, he's a good goalie.. but.. ?!

2 year deal.

After Brodeur just sigend for 31M over 6 years there is no way Washington can justify this move. I think Kolzig's even lost a few steps and is living off his reputaion more than anything now if he can command this coin. I don't consider him the same goalie he was a few years back. A good starter, but not much more than that IMO. What a stupid move, not to mention it sets a dangerous marketplace precedent.

True, the Caps can afford this as they won't be anywhere close to the cap in the next few years. But they needlessly gave up quite a bit more than they had too. Rest assured their future stars like Ovechkin will be trying to milk management come contract time (even more than originally thought), knowing they can be suckered like this.

Geez, is there a goalie around that's not getting a deal of over $5 million these days?

I think Kolzig has been cursed by having a bad team in front of him for years, but I don't think he's worth $5.45 million a year. Not to mention he's already 36 years old, and I think is starting to show signs of aging.

I guess we can all thank the Blackhawks for grossly overpaying Nikolai Khabibulin. Now every starting goaltender out there is going to believe he's worth upwards of $5 million, whether they've proven anything in their careers or not.

Brodeur's $5.2 million is starting to look like a bargain for a proven starting goaltender.

Bad deal

Kolzig is a good goalie, but he is not elite. Plus, he's on the downside of his career.

There's a reason teams suck under a cap world. It's because of deals like this one. Retarded.

This deal won't make or break Washington. They're rebuilding and probably won't be anywhere close to the cap the next few seasons.

I don't think it's a great contract, but it's not gonna make or break what they do this offseason.

Looks like he won't be coming to the West Coast.

If thats the case then why overpay for a decent goaltender and do bad, or pay somewhere closer to 2 mil for a goaltender who'll do good enough. Thats what makes more sense if they dont care about winning for the next 2 years.

What does the UFA goaltending class look like going into this offseason? I haven't checked, but maybe it's weak. With the cap going up a guy like Kolzig might have gotten 5.5-6 million a year if he was one of the few viable choices out there. It might be overpaying him, but it's not like two years is a long-term investment. Also, he's a veteran player and the team may like the presense he has in the locker room.

Pure and simple the Caps are rebuilding. What I see is just they want Kolzig for a few years until a young goaltender is ready to take the reins in Washington. The way they see it there is no rush to drag somebody in now so let Oli the Goalie keep the fort until a prospect is ready.
