MONTREAL (CP) - The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed captain Saku Koivu to a three-year contract extension through the 2008-09 season.

Koivu could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

He's making $3.42 million US this season.

The 31-year-old is playing in his 10th season with the Canadiens.

In 45 games this season, he has 14 goals and 25 assists.

I guess this puts an end any trade rumors.

This is good for Koivu and the Habs!:)

Saku is that teams inspirational leader and he plays with lots of heart:) ,only if my leader showed the same grit and determination that Saku does night in and night out!

Cheers

Good signing for the Habs

Koivu is the heart and soul of that team. Works his butt off each and every night

4.75 is a wee bit much, but atleast he is signed :thumb:

4.75 is too much, but many believe he's the heart and soul of the team so I guess its worth it for Montreal.

Too much, though nothing outrageous. I never have problems seeing loyal players like Koivu "cash in" in such a resonable sense.

His best comareable may have been Daniel Alfredsson in terms of what they are worth to their teams. And indeed I think that's probably how he got this contract of his, it's basically the same thing only Kovy makes a bit more. But the Swede is also an MVP candidate, a leading PK'er (most SH goals in the league), and our PP quatreback to go along with all the rest. Obviously, a bit much. But as Timmy said at least he's signed. Congrats to both the Habs and Koivu. :thumb:
