Canes add some Weight
"I believe I now have as good a chance as any to win a Stanley Cup and there was no way I was going to pass this up."
Sportsnet.ca -- The St. Louis Blues continue to clean house.
Sportsnet has learned the Blues have dealt highly-coveted centre Doug Weight to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Weight told Sportsnet he learned of the proposal Sunday night and agreed to waive his no-trade clause on Monday morning.
"I'm very excited to be going to such a great team," Weight said. "I believe I now have as good a chance as any to win a Stanley Cup and there was no way I was going to pass this up."
A source close to the Hurricanes would not confirm who Carolina had to give up in the trade, other than to say a "depth-type roster player, but the Hurricanes did not jeopardize the future to make this deal".
Weight, who served as an assistant captain with the team, was also the Blues' leading scorer with 11 goals and 33 assists.
The move comes a day after St. Louis sent the Blues' second-leading scorer Mike Sillinger to Nashville for Timofei Shishkanov.

TSN is reporting the deal is for more then just Weight?
We can start the bets on what goaltender is going the other way

TSN isn't saying if there's another team involved however.
I wonder just how big this deal is..
Carolina is ridiculous down the middle..
Weight is being added to Staal (66 points in 51 games), Brind'amour (47 points in 47 games) and Cullen (34 points in 50 games).
Jeez..

Didn't Cullen just bust his jaw?
Didn't Cullen just bust his jaw?
Only 2-4 weeks, given the olympic break he'll probably miss 10 games at most.
And from TSN...
The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Doug Weight and 27-year-old Finnish forward Erkki Rajamaki from the St. Louis Blues.
In exchange, Carolina gave to the Blues three draft picks and three players. The package includes:
- Carolina's first-round pick in 2006.
- Toronto's fourth-round pick in 2006, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.
- Chicago's fourth-round pick in 2007, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.
- Tough guy forward Jesse Boulerice, a 27-year-old eighth-year pro
- Forward Mike Zigomanis, a 25-year-old fifth-year pro
- Magnus Kahnberg, 25, an unsigned Carolina draftee from Sweden who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1
Who the hell is everyone there minus Weight?

Good upgrade on the forward end. However, the defense and goaltending isn't scaring me.

Boulerice is the only name I recognize right away.
Three picks and Three players for Weight?
This makes the Thornton and Fedorov deals look even worse.
What blows me away is that Carolina gave up a 1st round pick.

Holy crap! I thought Weight was favoured to come here.
Not that I was too high on that idea, but I didn't want him to go the canes either. . . AND for a bag of pucks, no less.
What's up now Mucks ? Jokinen ??
Oh yeah, welcome: Blueline Goddess
Really, Carolina gave up a bunch of crap and a first rounder.. not that big of an overpayment.
The 2 4th's really amount to nothing, and from what I gathered from the other 3 players, it may as well be Salmo, Rita and Winchester from an Oiler perspective.. nothing important.
This is also a very weak draft year.
Who the hell is everyone there minus Weight?
Boulerice? <edit>whoops bad link - I'll see if I can find the Downey fight</edit>

So does this drop the very productive captain Rod Brind'Amour to the third line and possibly Staal to the 2nd(although I don't see that happening) and kill some of the chemistry that has gotten them the most points in the NHL so far??? I think Weight will be moved again, and Carolina is just gonna use him as trade bait to maybe get a better D-man of the offensive sort. Kaberle is their leading D-man right now with 31 points and then a dropoff to 19 points is thier next closest guy. Maybe a possible swap the Flames for one of their talented D-men would be in the works but I just don't see this as a permanent move for Weight. I think they need a true PP QB and Weight could be the key to getting that guy.
Remember Weight's on the overpaid side at 5.5 if I'm not mistaken, but he's a UFA after this season. That's probably why the Blues didn't buy him out... they knew they could move him mid-season to a contender for some picks.
Assuming Keith Tkachuk picks up where he left off when he returns from the hand injury - I bet my bottom dollar that he gets dealt in similar fashion. To a contender for draft picks. He's also a UFA next summer.
one of the two - Tkachuk or Weight can't remember which - does have a team option for 06-07.
Wow. The Canes were already deep down the middle, so I just counted them out. Philly and Nashville already got their man so I figured he was Ottawa bound with no other suitors. I guess not. Calgary was reportedly interested, but in the West. Indeed, I thought he was coming to us sooner or later. But I was obviously foolish to think Carolina would pass based on already strong depth at center.
In any case, a 1st rounder for Weight? The talks stop there from an Ottawa point of view as fasr as I'm concerned, let alone add more mid-level picks and a few depth players. Discard two 4th's if you want, but in 2001 we got both Emery and Schubert in that round. This year we drafted Zubov and Bass in round 4 who both have definate NHL potential and seem promising. We may have had more success there, but that's all I can remember off the top of my head. The middle rounds kind of run together from years past for me. Anyway, the point is those picks can bve quite valuable to give up for a rental. Espcially with good scouts like Ottawa's.
As for the first round pick (which alone is a high price) Ottawa's first rounder has never not turned out well considering what else was realistically available. If it hasn't, we've always managed traded it/the selected player for a good return. Only Daigle and Chouinard are the exception to that rule. Klepis wasn't great but is now in the NHL, it was a weak year too boot, and Kaigorodov would be a top 15 pick today (taken 47th overall).
This deal is a steal for the Carolina Hurricanes! The 1st rounder they give up is more like a 2nd rounder at around 28th-30th pick. The Hurricanes are now the team to beat in the East as they still have around $9 million left to spend under the cap so they could be picking up more players which is just downright scary for the other Eastern teams.
Cheers

Well I heard from my sources (aka John Muckler on the Team 1200) that Muckler offered a first round pick straight up for Weight but also wanted to wait for the deadline because salary issues. St Louis was supposedly asking for TWO players from the Sens! No matter who it was its crazy for a rental
I guess Carolina had a little more to offer

Overpayment by Carolina. However, at the same time..that 1st round pick won't be much
This makes Carolina a beat in the east. As PDO pointed out, they are stacked at center. Perhaps the best team in the east, at that position.

I don?t see how acquiring Weight has made them better then Ottawa or even Philly. Ottawa has clearly the better defense and experienced goaltending. As for forwards Ottawa beats then on the wing by a long shot with Heatly, Alfredson and Havlat. The only thing they have that?s deeper then Ottawa is in the middle.
Let?s not forget either that Carolina plays in the weakest division in hockey making their stats bloated. Come playoff time things will be much tougher for Carolina even if they have played well against Ottawa
On a side note man I wish Ottawa would have pulled a deal for Cole? He?s been on my wish list for 4 years on these forums and look at him now. Some will say Staal makes him better but I think it?s the other way around

I never said they were better than the almighty sens :D However, I do think they are the best in the center position.
Agreed on Cole. He reminds me of Adam Deadmarsh. Ottawa would be even deadlier with Cole on the team
Agreed on everything max, except the central is the weakest division in all of hockey :)
