View Full Version : Brodeur signs for another $31,200,000 over 6
According to WFAN660 and the Devil's colour man Randy Velischek, he just signed that.
Which means he'll be a devil until he retires, most likley.
.. boy is that contract going to hurt in a few years when Brodeur is approaching 40, you'd have to imagine.
For now though, a pretty good deal considering the hype Brodeur gets, whether warranted or not, and compared to a guy like Turco who is actually being paid more / year.

What is Lou Lam doing?
What is Lou Lam doing?
I don't think anyone's informed him that paying 39 year olds obscen amount of money is a bad idea when there's a salary cap yet..

C'mon. Right now, with his resume, Brodeur is worth 7 million easy. 4 years from now he probably won't be. But look at it like this. If you were to give him 7 million for the next two years, 5 million for the two after that, then you are gettting him for around 3 million for the last two years. He is a steal right now at 5mil a season, and will be for atleast a couple more years.
I like it. Good deal. Gives Lou a couple of extra million to play with for the next 2-3 years, before what Brodeur is earning, is what he's actually worth. Ofcourse he could be like Hasek and still great at 39-40. Then it's an even better deal.
Really, I thought he'd get more, and $5.1 for Brodeur next year isn't terrible. However it still boils down to $5.1 / year for average goaltending. Don't believe me, check his SV%.. hasn't been in the top 10 for 4 seasons now. All you have to do is look at Toronto to see what happens when you tie up too much money into a 'tender who's in his 40's ;)

But Brodeur's greatest asset is that he can win the big games in the playoffs.
There are only 5 Goalies currently in the NHL who have won a Cup. Khabibulin and Osgood are far from the top of my list of desirable goaltenders. Belfour, Hasek and Brodeur are the others. So when you figure in age, Brodeur is the goalie to have in net for the big games.
Brodeur is currently 12th in SV%. .007% behind Kipper for 6th overall.
$5.1 won't be too much in 6 years. The cap should continue to slowly grow. What are they bumping it up to next year, 42.5 million? That makes 5.1 easier to swallow. It would leave 37.4mil to build the rest of the team, almost this year's entire cap. If it keeps growing the Max salary grows too. In 6 years 5.1 may be 3 or more million under the max.
This is a sweet deal for Marty and the Devils and good for Broduer for not being greedy and asking for market value or he'd be getting around $10 million more than what he just signed for!Pure class Marty!:)
Cheers

Sorry, your anti-Brodeur bias just cracks me up. I guess every team in the league would love to have "average goaltending".
Anyway, he'll be making the same amount of money he is now the rest of his career, which isn't that bad. Considering he could make $7 million easily on the open market, this isn't a bad signing by Lou. Marty wants to end his career with the Devils, and I have no problem at all with the length of this deal.

Brodeur is a great goalie. But he's been a lucky goalie as well. He's managed to escape the injury bug, he had a killer defense for years, and, let's face it, the Devils knew how to get the job done.
But... there's only so much luck a guy can have. I've been waiting for the crash, the moment when he becomes human. Will it happen? Maybe, maybe not. One would think he'd at the very least experience burnout from 70+ game seasons.
I think it's a bad move, personally. Guess we'll know for sure in 6 years.

I think it is a good deal. Right now he is 7$ million goalie, heck if Khabubulin is a $7 million goalie(ROTFL, especialy the way he is playing this year)then Brodeur sure as heck could be considered one at the moment. At worst when he nears 40 he would be a $3 million goalie, so at worst he should average out to something like a $5 million goalie in that span. Good deal for both NJ Devils and Marty.
