So much for trading him at the deadline.
Goodbye Again Super Mario.

The Penguins will announce next week that he will also be taking a part in ownership, and will have #87 retired at the end of the season.
Sad to see Lemieux go, but it's probably for the best, considering what a mess the Pens have become this year. It was only a matter of time...
We were lucky to see Mario in his prime before injuries got the best of him and dragged down the latter half of his career. I remember years ago when he got a standing ovation at Madison Square Garden at the end of a 5-goal game.
Another NHL legend with an unceremonious departure. So long Mario.

I remember when he came back after his bout with cancer. Most of us would have hung up our skates then but not Mario (or Koivu). That speaks toons about his character.
Good-bye Mario
Great player, great person, sad day for hockey.
Think it's fair to say he's another victim of the lockout?
This really sucks as I have Mario in a hockey pool!:(
Health is the most important thing and Mario's making the right move so I wish him good health and luck!
Cheers
Just very classy on and off the ice.
It's better to go now, than to struggle with pain and not producing for the team.
He's my favourite (non-Oiler) hockey player of all time.
Thanks, 66.

Well it's about time.
All that playing hockey and worrying about injuries was distracting him from ownership responsibilities.
Now he will be able to concentrate on his true talent.
Just kidding, guys.
He's had a great career, but imagine if was healthy the whole time . . .if he didn't have to worry about Hogkins disease, hip problems, back problems.
And recently about the ownership of the pens, and getting a new arena . . .etc
Imagine if his whole focus could have been playing hockey.
One of my favourite hockey memories is Lemieux taking a pass from Gretzky and burying it top-shelf in the 1987 Canada Cup.

My favourite Mario Moment was the 2002 Gold Medal Game the puck through the legs goal, he didn't score or get a point on the play, but it was a great move. 1700+ points in 915 games appox 1.8 points per game only Gretzky has a better points per game number at 1.92.

That was an amazing play. Fooled everyone in the world.
He was just .04 points behind Gretzky's PPG. He did this while battling cancer, owning the team, and reoccuring hip problems. Imagine if he had of played a full career. His numbers could have been better then Gretzky's. But ifs and buts aren't candy and nuts, so Gretzky is still ahead of him IMO as far as one of the greatest players ever.
