Flyers acquire Nedved from Coyotes
TSN.ca Staff
The Phoenix Coyotes have finally managed to trade Petr Nedved. He was sent to the Philadelphia Flyers Friday in exchange for defenceman Dennis Seidenberg.
Nedved has been going through a tough season. After missing 19 games with groin and elbow injuries, Nedved has been scratched from three of the Coyotes last four games. He has 2 goals and 11 points in 25 games this season.
In his 914 game NHL career, Nedved has counted 303 goals, 388 assists and 691 points.
Nedved signed with Phoenix as a free agent in the summer of 2004. He was scheduled to make $2.204 million this season.
Seidenberg certainly comes at a cheaper price. He is making $450,000 this season - the league minimum. The 24-year old has just 92 NHL games under his belt, with 6 goals and 20 points to his credit. He has 2 goals and 7 points in 29 games with the Flyers this season.
Seidenberg has also had injury trouble this year, missing 11 games with knee, wrist and head injuries. He had been scratched from the Flyers last three games and has been a scratch on four other occasions earlier in the year.
Nedved should help provide depth down the middle for the Flyers, who are hurting at centre with injuries to Peter Forsberg, Keith Primeau. The injuries have led to rookies Mike Richards and Jeff Carter getting more ice-time, and they have played well, but Nedved's experience should provide a boost down the stretch.

I'd take my chances with the 2 kids, especially with the season Nedved's having. The Flyers don't need his "experience"
I like this move by the Flyers! This way they don't have to rush Forsberg back into the lineup and can let his groin heal.We still don't know Primeau's status either so more depth at center is what the Flyers needed.Siedenberg on the other hand has potential and I liked what I saw of him with the Flyers but with Randy Jones and Freddie Meyer also on the Flyers defencmen depth chart moving Sidenberg who's injury prone isn't that bad of a loss for Philly.
Cheers

I don't question the Flyers looking for help at center. And I most certainly think they are correct not to rush Forsberg back - save him for when it counts - they are in first place after all.
What I question is the aquisition of Petr Nedved as a solution.
They're winning, they're in first place... so they're not desparate at this time. No need to grab Nedved IMO.
Phoenix just got to dump a terrible contract and pick up a yonng, servicable defenseman. Don't like this trade one bit from the Philly POV. Was I a Nedved booster for a while? Absolutey. However, the fact remains that his MO is that he's a guy constantly playing for his next contract, and now he's on what'll most likely be his last. He has a boatload of talent, but very little drive. He also can't play defense, so I can't see Hitchcock falling in love with him by any means.

First off, just found out about the trade tonight. Been helping my brother move into his new apartment today. I'm not jumping up down like the Forsberg signing, it's an ok move. The Flyers gave up on Dennis, he has more games played than the new guys we have now in Jones and Meyer, they look better than him. He was still making rookie mistakes. I knew he was going to get traded, just wondering when. Nedved, seems to do well with a change of scenery. Might benefit playing with some fellow countrymen in Handzus and Radivojevic. All are from Czechoslovakia. Our team is obviously a contender, we'll see what happens. Clarke got draft picks out of the deal as well.
Primeau is having problems looking over his shoulders on both sides. He has a tinted visor to stop the lights from bothering him. He is skating but not with the team. I don't see him coming back, if at all. After the Olympics is his deadline for deciding what he wants to do. St. Louis wanted too much for Doug Weight. This is ok for me now. Cheap salary. Last time we got a center before the deadline in Zhamnov, he really helped out. So now we have Forsberg, Handzus, Nedved, Carter, Umberger and Richards. Seids was traded because Pitkanen will be back tomorrow and the rest of the guys are doing better. Clarke did a good deal based on everything he could work with. We are 3rd in the conference with everything bad that has happened to us. Now Esche is back, Pitkanen is back, Desjardins will be back before the Olympics.
Nedved is listed as C/LW in the press release.

I agree with you. There is a lot in Nedved's game to like, but he only gives you glimpses followed by long periods of indiffernt play, and defence is not in his playbook. I can't help but wonder what if the Flyers had waited until a little closer to March 9, what they might have acquired cheaper and with more upside, or is Forsberg hurt worse than we thought and Primeau headed for Bret Lindrosland?

Don't really like the trade. I thought Seidenberg could have been a pretty good D-man of rthe Flyers. He has a shot and once he gets some control of it, he could be dangerous on the PP. Both players have been fairly hurt this year. But I guess this could workout if Nedved finds some motivation with this being a good chance for him to have his name engraved.
I was looking for another center to fill in with the injuries to Forsberg and Primeau, Nedved wouldn't be my first choice, but you never know it might work out. Besides, at least they aren't giving up as much as they in the Adam Oates deal.
I have definite opinions about Nedved because I watched him play for years on his 2 stints with the Rangers. 3 or 4 years ago, Nedved incurred the wrath of the Madison Square Garden faithful when he became the poster boy for underachievement... every time he touched the puck his own home fans would go ballistic on him - with BOO's cascading down from all corners of the Garden. It was pretty sad. This went on for like a month toward the end of that season.
To his credit, he worked hard in the off-season and came back the following year with much more intensity in his game, and the fans embraced him because at least he was trying. But the truth is that this guy just can't skate! He's got a world class wrist shot... but what good does that do when you can get easily chased down by a slow defensemen? If Nedved was even just an above average skater, he might be a hall-of-famer... but unfortunately he is far from that. It's just aggravating because you want so much more out of him but you never get it... 900 NHL games and we're still waiting
Going by my history of watching Nedved play, and the fact he's having a poor, injury-riddled season... I don't think he'll be any kind of factor for the Flyers, good or bad. If he does get noticed, it's usually for the wrong reasons... He'll get his goals but other than that he's pretty much a permanent non-factor.
I am glad that Petr wound up on a contender though as his career seems to be winding down.

He's done pretty good in his first two as a Flyer with a goal tonight and assist on Satuday.
