He's on his back (http://www.rh71.com/Projects/Ovechkin/vids/goal32.avi)
I've seen it about 15 times.. still don't know how he pulled the puck like that.
Also not sure what the hell Boucher was thinking
This kid is absolutely sick. He scored two incredibly nice goals against the Ducks a couple nights ago, and completely destroyed Vishnevski with a hit.
Imagine what he'd be doing with a setup guy like Thornton, Spezza, or Forsberg on his line.

Imagine once he's about 26. He's 20 years old (2 older than Crosby ;)) and has only played against men for one year in his life.. this being the second. Give him some time to develop a bit more, get a bit stronger.. and wow
If he was on pretty much any other team in the league, he'd have MUCH better numbers. Even in St. Louis he'd be with Weight.

While what Ovechkin did was amazing, I still think that is a much nicer goal.
I mean, Ovechkin made a great play that was unbelievable hand-eye coordination.. I just think.. yeah.
Top 3 goals of the year have to be these two and Spezza vs Souray/Theodore.

Now that I've seen it several times, I'm wondering the same thing. Talk about getting caught out of position...

While I agree this goal is amazing, I think it's an amazing bit of luck.
How many times have you seen a guy down, or going down, take a swipe at the puck?
It happens all the time. . . good on Ovechkin to stay with the puck.
This time there was a set of circumstances that lead to a goal.
Call it luck, call it coincedence, call it whatever . . .don't call it goal of the year.
Now, I believe Ovechkin is truly a great player with many more hi-lite reel goal left in him, but Spezza's undressing of Souray/Theodore took a lot more skill.

I have to say this took more skill then the Spezza goal. I honestly don't think what Ovechkin did was luck. For him to take his stick and put it that way(I still don't know what the hell he did with his stick) and get enough on it to put it in the net while he's on his back sliding across the ice very fastly.. Just amazing skill.
I'd go further to say that this is the goal of the year, I'd like to see a better goal all time.

Enough already, it was as much luck, and bad positioning by Boucher, as it was skill by Ovechkin.

Did he play against women before? Must be a young guy thing. Sorry but I couldn't help it. The "playing against men" phrase seems a little macho. Why not use the term, 'playing against top professionals"?
The goal seems to be more "merde donkey" luck more than something intentional.
a4l, it's about playing against men or playing against boys. Big difference. A 27 year old man or a 16 year old boy.. pretty easy decision who it's easier to dominate ;).

I watched the streaming video in swflyers25 post in "super-duper-slow-mo".
The reason that Boucher is so out of position is:
As Ovechkin is carrying the puck in, it delects off the defenders skate, causing it careen sharply to the left.
Boucher was playing the original path of the puck.
At the same time, the defender is pushing Alex toward the new direction of the puck.
Now with Boucher out of position, and some very good hand-eye coordination, Ovechkin scores a lucky goal.
And NJ names him "king"

I couldn't agree more. Spezza's Goal was much nicer. So was Zherdev's.

What an amazing goal, I agree that might have been the best goal ever!!! On his back going towards the boards, and angling it in between the goalie and the opening behind him, at such a sharp angle. He is a true phenom!

Thats your view, and I obviously disagree with it. I'd give a longer post but I'd just repeat what I already said.
Even if it was lucky, its one of the nicest goals all time, if not the best, IMO. Spezza's, Zherdev's, and Satan's(last season) were all very nice, but this one was spectacular. I wouldn't say Spezza's for example is better because really it was just a bad defensive play by Souray(big surprise), and Spezza had a goal which could happen in Pee Wee or Major Junior. Where else have you seen a goal like this? Last week in highschool hockey I seen someone do a carbon copy of Spezza's. Puts the puck between someone's legs, go in and do a little deak on the goalie and in the net. I've never seen someone do what Ovechkin did.

There is already a thread on that overrated lucky goal.

threads merged.
I could have done what Ovechkin did.
I couldn't have done what Spezza did, therefore his goal takes more talent.

I have to agree with JR. Ovechkin's goal was amazing but it was very lucky, more luck than skill. Spezza's goal was pure skill, there's the difference IMO.

Wayne Primeau just scored a goal against Philly that was atleast as nice as Ovechkin's IMO.
That's right, I said Wayne Primeau.:D

I like the goal and it is up there with Spezza's, IMO, but the goal was luck. There have been dozens of times where a player falls and swipes at the puck. Sometimes they hit the puck, sometimes they miss completely. This time Ovechkin connected with the puck and sweeped it backwards into the net. I don't think this is as much of praising Ovechkin's goal as it is praising Crosby's rival's goal.

Ovechkin will score many highlight reel goals in his career but the circumstances of this goal were a combination of luck and persistence by him. It was an amazing goal to watch but IMO goals like Spezza?s are much nicer because the player has full control of the puck and makes great moves to put it in the net

I totally agree NJ!
And its not like Ovechkin just took a swipe at the puck like others would have,he turned his hands over while on his back and shot the puck from a fair distance into the net, thats just crazy!I'll take this goal over any of the other goals anyday!
Cheers

Exactly. I can appreciate a nice goal, but Ovechkin's was simply out of this world. The patience he showed in not just swiping at it is simply amazing, especially for a youngster. To be on his back..
I just can't get over it.

I could put on a pair of skates right now, go to the local arena, skate down the ice, get near the net, fall down on my back and slide across the rink then swipe at a puck and hope that it goes in the net. That's not skill. Anyone who can slide on their back and take a random swipe at a puck can do what Ovechkin did, but they could not reinact Spezza's goal.

Sorry Junes, you couldn't :].
I play hockey at a reasonably high level, and what Ovechkin did takes outstanding dexterity. I don't think it was that pretty of a goal.. but it definetly took a lot of talent. I highly doubt you could skate at the speed Ovechkin is, coming in on an NHL calibur defenseman and goaltender, get knocked over, spin around, have the ability to know where the puck is and where you are in relation to teh goal and perfectly swipe the puck into the net.
Watch what he did.. it was 100% intentional, and there's a reason no one's ever done anything like it before. Besides, I thought you didn't believe in luck? ;]
