Kovalchuk 'Taunts' Crosby

The Thrashers made it 5-0 in the second period with two power-play goals against Fleury, the first by Marian Hossa. Then, with Crosby sent off with his second slashing penalty, Kovalchuk took a pass from outside the circle and one-timed a blistering shot over Fleury’s left shoulder.

Kovalchuk turned quickly and pointed toward Crosby, who was coming out of the penalty box. The crowd chanted “Crosby! Crosby! Crosby!” toward one the No. 1 draft pick and one of the NHL’s most touted prospects in years.

I love it...

Crosby has a real big mouth and it was sweet to see Kovalchuk rub it in Crosbys face who had earlier slashed and cross checked Kovalchuk.Ilya backed it up on the ice and later score another goal and got the hat-trick.I must admit though that I love Crosby's intensity but he has to learn to keep his yap shut and that he's not going to win every battle. And for a supposed role model Crosby shouldn't be swearing like he was especially when the cameras on him, thats a no-no!

Cheers

I finally saw a video of the incident. Kovalchuk was hilarious, he just turned around pointed right at Crosby and stared him down. Good stuff.:thumb:

Cherry took the words right out of my mouth.

"Someone should've broke his arm right off."

For pointing at Crosby? Don gets picky about the stupidest little things doesn't he?

Well I didn't see it... but I now know that Crosby is really hot-headed. It's fairly easy to get him riled up and take penalties. He has some maturing to do... and when he does watch out. This kid has the skills to win games by himself. Once he can control his temper and focus that energy into making teams pay on the scoreboard... there won't be a whole lot of taunting.

But as long as he's an easy target... teams will prey on that. It's just part of being a young man - all piss and vinegar, no seasoning or wisdom. It will come, this kid really is going to be a superstar (based on what I've seen).

As for Cherry, I don't follow him but from what I have been told - I would guess that because Crosby is Canadian and Kovalchuk is not, Don got his panties in a bunch. Isn't that prety much how it goes with him?

Anything to get an edge is the point Don Cherry is missing. Don you called Crosby out on diving early in the year. This is the payback for that diving, and Mel is right, when he matures he will be deadly. The way Chuk is now :)

I doubt it's a Canadian thing. I don't think Don is very fond of Crosby either.

Well Crosby certainly didn't help his cause tonight taking 4 penalties, two of which being diving & unsportsmanlike conduct for yapping/gesturing in the box. Kovalchuk said after last night's game:

"He takes those stupid penalties all the time. He's an 18-year-old kid and can't do this. He starts yapping about his teammates in the newspapers. ... If he wants to play tough, he can play tough... He's not Mario Lemieux yet."

And I gotta say the while Kovalchuk makes a point when it comes to yapping, but like Cherry was saying the Pens have hung this kid out to dry, since there is no one sticking up for the guy and the Pens team itself is letting the league bully the kid around. If he was on the Oilers with Laraque or the Flyers with Brashear or some team with some kind of enforcer, he would never have to deal with guys throwing him around or guys taunting him and would probably be more comfortable to play his game. It's a couple years down the road, but that should be on the Pens things to do list in the offseason or anytime now.

Hun?!
I don?t know what all you guys are talking about. Crosby reacted like any other player would have after a cross check from behind. He didn?t get rattled or he did not behave immaturely rather Kovalchuk did. What kind of sportsmanship is pointing at a player in a box after scoring? What would you guys be saying if he did that to Sakic, Yzerman, Sundin or Jagr? He?d be a punk kid like he was made up to be a few years back when he showboated in the under 18 tournament.

As much as it?s hard to say Don is right

I thought it was funny when he pointed at Crosby, and I probably wouldn't feel any differently if he did that at Sundin. I just don't see what the big problem is. It's not like he was dancing around the ice or anything.

Yeah same as leaf fans had no problems with Alfredson pocking fun of Sundin's stick throwing incident. =]
I agree it?s not THAT big a deal but I don?t see where it can be construed that Crosby is the child in this

Well, I wasn't one of those that got bent out of shape over that;) I get what you're saying though. Most fans laugh at this, but once it happens to a player on their team they can't think of bad things to say about the guy quick enough.

Personally, I think this is good for hockey. Two of the guys who'll be the face of the NHL down the road are already starting to have a heated rivalry. Too bad they play in markets where the games won't get hyped up like other rivalries would.

No, he's not. He is one of them, but not the best.

Yes very true, but everyone has a different opinion, but I think you can say he is the best offensive player in the league.

Yes, he may be the best offensive player in the game but he is not very good defensively. That is mainly why I would take a good number of players over Kovalchuk. As sson as he learns to play both sides of the ice, he can be talked about as the best player in the game.

Maybe. I'm biased to Forsberg myself.

Ok, I have watched a few games of Kovalchuk, and he is isn't bad defensively, and they don't ask him to play defense, the team just wants him to score goals.

When he does play defense, he hits people, and you don't see that a lot these days.

I know the +/- stat is a bit deceiving, but Kovalchuk has 65 points in 41 games, and is still a -2. I realize he's not asked to play defense, but I'd still take Forsberg or Iginla, or even Elias for that matter, players that are responsible all over the ice, rather than just offensively. Just my personal preference though.:D

Calling Kovalchuk the best scorer in the league.. I can agree with that. You can argue a bit that he's the best offensive player as well (his play-making is SOLELY under-rated) but the fact is, he's extremly close.. but not quite the best player in the league right now. I don't like to compare goalies, defenseman and forwards to each other, but for comparing forwards, guys who are ahead of Kovalchuk..

Forsberg, Elias, Thornton, Alfredson all in a heartbeat. After that, there are quite a few players who are tossups.. the Jagr's and Staal's of the league.

I would say he's definetly a top 3 LW in the league as well as a top 10 forward though.

Yes I could agree with all of your statements, but everyone has a different opinion, but I think everyone can say he is a top 5 offensive player.
