Don Cherry says Sidney Crosby doesn't deserve 'A' with Penguins
posted December 17 @ 20:37, EST
TORONTO (CP) - Don Cherry turned his attention to Sidney Crosby yet again during his Coach's Corner segment on Saturday night.
Cherry, the popular Hockey Night in Canada commentator, said the 18-year-old star hasn't done anything to warrant being named an alternate captain with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"Please? An 18-year-old kid?" said Cherry, putting his hand to his head for emphasis. "He's going to give them ideas? Come on, that's ridiculous."
Crosby was named an assistant captain on Friday after Michel Therrien took over as coach of the Penguins. Ed Olczyk was fired from the struggling team on Thursday night.
It's not the first time Cherry's been critical of Crosby.
During the 2003-04 season, he called Crosby a "hotdog" after showing video of a trick goal he scored while playing for the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Cherry was also critical of Crosby's decision to skip the Top Prospects game in January and earlier this season accused him of being a diver early in his NHL career.
"No kid should have as much to say as he's got to say," Cherry said Saturday. "Yapping at the referees, doing the whole thing, golden boy.
"This kid is really taking over the whole thing."
Ron MacLean, who hosts the segment, suggested Cherry may have a vendetta against Crosby, who is second in rookie scoring with 33 points in 33 games.
"I don't have a vendetta," Cherry responded.Link (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/shownews.jsp?content=s121775A)
Darn tootin, Crosby doesn't deserve the "A". Being able to score may be leading on the scoresheet but that doesn't mean he's a leader. Crosby got his "A" for publicity reasons and to drum up fan support. Any fan with half a brain knows that Crosby isn't leadership material at this point in his NHL career.
What'd Crosby ever do to Cherry? Just wondering..
I didn't hear these complaints when Nash got his A. And atleast Crosby could describe the own end of the ice to you.

I have to disagree with Cherry. Though I think they did it for the wrong reasons, Crosby does lead by example and if everyone played like him and had the desire he has when he's out there the team would win a lot of games. You don't have to be a 36 year old mouth runner to get a letter. Look at Tomas Kaberle with the leafs. He's relatively young, and apparently doesn't say anything in the lockerroom and isn't outspoken at all. He's got an A on his shirt. Why? Just look at the guy play.
Cheezy is jealous of a kid with more talent in his baby toenail than Cheezy ever had in his whole life. Probably can't stand the kid stealing the spotlight from him.
Look around at the Penguins, which underacheiver do you give the A to? A letter doesn't have to mean verbal leadership or experience, maybe they are trying to embarrass some of the veterans on the team by saying "hey, this kid is outworking, outplaying, and outcaring you supposed leaders".
I don't see what's wrong with it or how it's any of Cheezy's business.

Cherry's reaction was hilarious though. He just put his hand on his forehead and says.. "Oh Boy".
Cherry certainly has it in for Crosby. Maybe he is afraid that Sydney will be better than his favourite Bobby Orr.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and we all know that Cherry's opinions usually envoke controversy.
For myself - Pens brass have a reason for giving him the 'A'. Good for Crosby if he can wear it with pride and set an example for his team mates.

Who else on that team of underachievers could you give it to?
Crosby is the face of the franchise going forward so F it.
Don Cherry knows. He says things to get a reaction and you all don't dissapoint. He could care less what you or I think, he became what he is because we all tuned into Coaches Corner in droves over the years. We created him and the only way he can be shut up is to stop watching HNIC between the 1st and 2nd period. But thats not going to happen because we all know the CBC caters to the Leafs and their fans, and of course all leaf fans are Donald S Cherry fans. ;)
As for the actual A on Sid the Kids jersey, when was the last time a rookie was so honoured? Didn't Bryan McCabe once captain the Isles as a rookie?

Not Gretz.
Didn't Stevie Y get the 'C' at a young age? I doubt it was his rookie year. What about Trevor Lindon...he got a letter when he was quite young too, didn't he?

I was thinking Nash also had an A last season... Could be wrong but I seem to remember that

So what you're saying is that the goof has no integrity, agreed. Also, he can see our reaction here?
The only time I ever watch Crotches corner is by accident, people should stop watching it, it only serves to justify his egotistical ignorant spew, the guy is an embarrassment to hockey and Canada.
Again, who do you give the A to on the Pens?

"Crosby, the newly appointed alternate captain, criticized his teammates' lack of effort a week before Olczyk was fired."
So if he's the guy standing up and saying "this ain't good enough", if he's the one basically saying "I'm sick of losing, why aren't you guys?", then THAT'S probably why he got the A, and I'd say he deserves it.

Yoata knows ;)
Also, he can see our reaction here? For all we know, you could be Don Cherry, you must know you get on some peoples nerves, perhaps even make their teeth itch. Kind of the way Don Cherry does eh ;)

Yeah well, a lot of people can't handle the truth, makes them turn a discussion about hockey into personal rhetoric... eh ;)

Huh?
Huh? :confused:A typo, change the D to an F and it will all become clear :)
So now you disagree with Cheezy?
Also, try brushing. :)
Goof was your word, I happen to agree with him about Sid getting the A, but not for the same reasons, Sid has the whole team on his back as it is, he doen't need the added weight as an alternate captain. Just let the kid play hockey.
Dan Chunky never really played in the NHL and he is jealous of anyone who has real talent.

Just because he has differing opinions then you doesn't mean he's jealous, or is "out to get people".
Sidney Crosby doesn't deserve 'A' with Penguins
Don Cherry doesn't deserve his show on CBC! :thumb:

I wouldnt say he doesnt deserve it, but I would say it is a bad idea. An 18-year old as assistant captain is too much pressure and creates too much bad tension in the locker room.

Don't worry WB, next season he'll be getting the "C". Some the Veterns are already accepting the idea of Captain Crosby and by some accounts are already treating him as such. It is no secret in the locker room that this is Sid's team. And really when you lead your team in scoring and can amaze your teammates almost every night with your skill, who the heck is going to tell you what to do. As long as Recchi is behind him, in the locker room, he will be fine.
