RIGA, Latvia (CP) - Canada scored three goals in the second period en route to a 3-1 exhibition win over Latvia on Monday in a tuneup for the IIHF world hockey championship. Latvia's Janis Sprukts opened the scoring at 14:43 of the first period with an unassisted goal.

Patrick Marleau sparked Canada's second-period comeback with a goal on the power play at 5:28. Simon Gagne scored at 8:22 and Dany Heatley at 17:15. Martin Brodeur was solid in goal for Canada.

The two teams open the world tournament Saturday in Austria. Canada closes out its exhibition schedule on Thursday against the Czech Republic in Prague.

Well Brodeur certainly appeared to be solid. I heard that we were outplayed in the first period. That shouldn't be happening against Latvia.

Team Canada needs to gel..which will take time

I fear the Czech. Republic. Remember..this is almost the same team that Canada nearly lost to at the World Cup.

If Brodeur stands on his head, Canada should do fine..but they will need a lot from Thornton
