View Full Version : Boogaard
Man this kid's a big boy... I'm watching the Philly / Minny game. He's already thrown a few thunderous hits.
Him and Brashear just went at it, but they both fell down and never really got established, so you might see them go again. (End of the 1st now)
Laraque absolutely destroyed Boogard a couple weeks ago. I don't think Boo even landed a punch, but he took about 12.
I think he can be a physical presence, but I'm not sure he can swing with the best of them.
I find it absolutely astounding that this guy is in the NHL, especially the cew NHL, he was by far the worst player I've eve seen in junior, to even call him a player with a straight face is difficult, brutal skater, he's there for one reason only, didn't think players like that existed anymore at this level, guess that's waht being 6'7 and 275 lbs will do for you, surprised he can even stand up to fight.
I disagree to an extent... he really gets around the ice and throws some highlight reel hits. He gets ice time even in the third period because he creates open ice for his teammates... He's a distraction because nobody wants to get railroaded by this mountain of a man. And he does railroad.
Have you watched him much this year Yoata? Maybe he's improved since you watched him in juniors. I just don't see him sticking in Minnesota under Lemaire if he's that much of a liability. Lemaire praises him and more importantly gives him late ice time in close games (like today). I respect what Lemaire has to say... but even so, actions speak louder than words. And he was out there today in the 3rd of a 2-2 game.
He lost to Brash today. It wasn't a great battle, they both fell down in the beginning so it was hard to judge... when they got back up Brash hugged him in tight (what else is new) and caught him with some jabs. Then they fell down... the whole thing lasted about 10 seconds.
Boogaard did pull his head back, and was not able to deal with Brashear's left. I know he also lost to Laraque. His achilles heel is big lefties, But these are top of the line heavies, and he is a rookie after all.
I think the kid's definitely got a future. He's making a name for himself and mixing it up with the league's best. Anyone see what happened when Trevor Gillies was sent out to go after Boogaard?
I agree that Lemaire must see something in him to have him on the team, let alone play any minutes. I have watched the Wild play the Nucks a couple times, and was surprised at the Boogieman (his nickname with the Cougars) being out there but if I recall he did throw some hits and tried to start a fight but wasn't out there long or at least not noticeably so I guess couldn't have been noticeably bad either. I guess it's possible that with his huge frame he hadn't developed enough yet to have any coordination when he was younger, and has since improved his skills, Chara wasn't exactly a dominant player in junior either probably for similar reason though he was still good, but I'll still be surprised if Boogie stays at the NHL level for long.
I guess time will tell for Boogie.
Another big kid I remember as a rookie was Eric Cairns. He was just tripping over his own two feet - it was ridiculous. The only thing he had going for him was size. When it came to the rough stuff I remember when the much smaller Rob Ray gave him a sound beating and bloodied him up. I actually felt bad for the kid.
But he wound up as an NHL regular. Maybe boogie will too... or maybe he'll fall by the wayside. I guess we'll find out over time. Personally - I think with the right coaching, he'll stick, if not in Minny then somewhere else.

Brash got him with a few good shots and then Derek just turtled. Got tired of getting pounded pretty good.
Derek just turtled
What fight were you watching? I love how some Flyer fans (not referring to you) are even calling that a TKO. Absolutely unbelievable.
When they both fell - Brash got up first, and had his bear hug going before Boogaard was even allowed to stand up.
Boogie was caught off guard by some quick lefts some of which glanced off. The one that did hit flush knocked his helmet off. And he did hold his head back out of harm's way for a few seconds to regain himself, but there was no turtling. By the time Boogaard got back upright to throw some more... it was right back to bear hug time and down they went.
To hear some Flyer fans talk about it (again not you in particular) you'd think Boogaard left the ice on a stretcher! when in fact he was not the slightest bit damaged.
Brashear clearly won, no doubt. But the fight was nothing more than a brief and uneventful win over a rookie that lasted all of 10 seconds.
And for those beaming that Brashear took care of business because Boogaard was throwing big hits on the Flyers.... Boogaard went after Brashear, not the other way around.
I read on anohter site people arguing this fight before I got a chance to see it for myself.
I gotta say when I finally saw the video it was a let down, nothing to write home about.
Flyer fans get so tired of defending Brashear - the hugger - that they hype it up every every time he finally gets around to fighting even if its a minor scrape.

He did not turtle

Brash didn't have him in a bear hug Mel. He had hold of the Derek's jersey at the top. He yanked on it, he didn't have him in a bear hug. I have no clue as to what you were watching. Brash had him good, starting punching on him, Boogard got tired of it and just pulled Brashear down on top of him. That's how it went. Derek got no good shots in. Brash got all the shots in the fight. Even the MIN announcers say that...

I watched the video 15 times already.
Before Boogaard even got a chance to stand up and establish himself after the initial fall... both of Brashear's hands were covering the numbers on Boogard's back. That's ususally indicitave of a bear hug. If Brash was really up for testing the kid he would have squared off even, but that's never been his MO.
After Brashear controlled the fight with a flurry of left jabs (only a few of which connected). Boogaard regained his balance... but immediately both of Brashear's hands were covering the name on the back of Boogard's jersey again, and that's when they fell. Watch the video. Typical Brashear hug-fest.
I already said Brash won, no question about that... Boogaard got absolutely nothing on him. You are 100% right that it was a total Brashear win. Boogaard didn't really land anything, and Brash controlled the brief scrap start to finish.
But a lot of Flyer fans making were making it out to be more than it was, just because it was Brashear. That's all I'm saying.

Then you are looking at something else. Brash grabbed Boo's jersey at his neck. Think of someone massaging your neck, that's where he grabbed the jersey. Brash's hands are at the top of the jersey. That's it. Where you are getting this bear hug idea is beyond me. I've seen Brash hug guys, he's only played for us for the past few years. He didn't do that this time. Sorry Mel.
