Roenick Says He Belongs on Turin Team
Pete Thomas
Jeremy Roenick has made his argument. Tonight he'll try to back it up against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Their head coach, Peter Laviolette, will also coach Team USA at the Winter Olympics in February in Turin, Italy.

Roenick was asked whether he expects to be chosen. "I better be," the King center said. "It would be a travesty if I'm not…. I know they want a youth movement, and they need to have one, but it'd be disrespectful of the guys who have gotten Team USA to this point internationally."

Some of those veterans are Chris Chelios of the Detroit Red Wings, Derian Hatcher of the Philadelphia Flyers, and Mike Modano and Bill Guerin of the Dallas Stars.

Roenick, who turns 36 on Jan. 17, said if he isn't chosen, "they better hope that I don't get a job as a commentator on NBC for [the Games], or it'd be 'Go Canada' all the way, and I don't want that."

I don’t know if Roenick was saying this tongue in cheek but it sounds like a bunch of BS. I generally like Roenick but this comment reminds me of Claude Lemieux when he didn’t get picked for the Olympics. One of the worse things the US could do for it’s team is invite anybody who might bring BA to the locker room.

What a polar opposite between Roenick and Yzerman.

Yzerman, always a classy guy, knew it was better to step aside because he isn't playing at his top level anymore and it could hurt Team Canada's chances.

Roenick, not so classy, wants one more shot at Olympic gold and hopes his past achievements will overshadow his current poor season. If the Team USA management is smart and going with the current most talented players, Roenick will not be included. If he is included, that will be one wasted roster spot because not only is Roenick having a poor season, but he would bring a bad attitude and the shadow of his past actions at the Olympics.

Roenick isn't someone I would want representing my country. As for leadership, Team USA can get that from many others.

Is this guy schizophrenic or what? Was he not just quoted praising Yzerman for stepping aside and letting younger guys on their game go?

Does he think he's better than Yzerman at this point? I know who I'd chose between the two for any team.

To be fair I haven't analyzed who else is available for the US, but regardless, it's like this guy is in a competition with Apery for who can be the most classless.

I saw Roenick on The Score the night before the LA played Toronto. He said alot more than what was in the article above. But all to the same effect. He basically said that it would be disrespectful of Team USA to leave him and Chelios and others who have been there in the past, off the team. He made sure he was looking directly into the camera when he said it. When they changed camera angles Roenick turned his head to continue talking directly to it. What a maroon!
He said that Team USA will win gold "only if I'm there. They won't if I'm not." Please! First, Get over yourself JR. Second, Team USA will be lucky to see a medal game. With or without JR.

He never misses an opportunity to remind us of what an utter idiot he is, does he? He's always whining about getting disrespected.

He's well past his prime.

Chelios is older than my grandmother.

You've got to love Jeremy. He will br a great asset to the US team or at least he will make them easier to beat. lol

Does anybody else think it's a coincidence that the two biggest mouths in the league (Roenick, Avery) happen to play on the same team? I guess they're rubbing off on each other.

As for the roster, I don't think this is anywhere near an official roster, but these are the players that took part in the Olympic Orientation camp back in September:

Forwards
Jason Blake, Dustin Brown, Erik Cole, Matt Cullen, Scott Gomez, Chris Higgins, Mike Knuble, Steve Konowalchuk, Richard Park, Mark Parrish, Brian Rolston, Doug Weight, Chris Drury, Brian Gionta, Bill Guerin, Jeff Halpern, Ryan Kesler, Ryan Malone, Mike Modano, Zach Parise, Keith Tkachuk.

Defensemen
Bryan Berard, Mark Eaton, Tim Gleason, Derian Hatcher, Jordan Leopold, John-Michael Liles, Aaaron Miller, Brian Pothier, Hal Gill, Paul Martin, Brian Rafalski, Andy Roach, Ryan Suter, David Tanabe.

Goalies
Ty Conklin, Rick DiPietro, Robert Esche, Ryan Miller

The forward group is somewhat thin so Roenick should get the call. It?s beyond me how Roenick thought that this outburst would help him get on the team. You guys really got screwed with some of these characters. First there was Hull now Roenick and next it will be Chunky Keith =]

Actually if there's one vet who deserves a shot, it's Tkachuk.

He has very quietly worked himself back into game shape and don't look now but he's starting to play like the Keith of old (although on a bad team).

The only knock is that his game does not mesh well with the international style. So he may get passed over anyway.

Also I think Leetch should probably go. He's still got some left in the tank.

According to an article I read... they're really not making final decisions till the 19th and they'll be looking at who's having strong seasons. Who's hot this month could actually have some effect on the roster.

The roster will be announced live during an OLN game on the 19th by John Davidson and Mike Emerick.

Yeah I agree on Tkachuk and Leetch
Tkachuk has what 10 points in like 6 or 7 games...? Not bad for just coming off an all you can eat smorgasbord
Sorry I just can?t help it =]

I'm wondering if they're going to try to put the Tkachuk/Modano/Guerin line together again this year, they were pretty solid during the 2004 World Cup. I think all 3 of them should make the team, especially considering the lack of depth up front.

Leetch I'm a bit undecided on. I think he's still a solid defenseman, and has been a regular on the Olympic squad, but he's getting up there in age. He is a veteran though, and could be solid on that blueline. The US should actually have a pretty good offensive blueline with Leetch, Rafalski, Martin, Leopold, and Liles. The question is can any of them handle the forwards of teams like Canada, Sweden, and the Czech Republic?

Yeah, I don't know the source of that list, but glaring omissions include:

F: York, Conroy, Connolly, Amonte, Young

btw, I know Knuble has played for the US before, so I'm assuming he has dual citizenship, also Park is listed as Korean, so I guess the same?

D: Schneider, Mara, Corvo, Leetch, Weinrich, Hedican, Hill, Klee, Ballard, Preissing

G: Graham, Dunham, Snow

What is that, the Senior Olympic hockey team?

Quite honestly, the only players on that list that I think should have a chance at making it would be York, Mara, Leetch, Ballard, and Grahame. Knuble and Park are solid finds though, and could be given a shot as spares. It all depends on whether they start the youth movement this year, or take another shot with the same group they had in 2002.

Hmmm, Schneider is one of the best dmen in the game right now, from any country, and Conroy is having another good year and isn't that old, neither is Dunham.

Regardless, certainly almost any of those guys would have to be considered over some of the ones on the previous list.

Leopold shouldn't be on the team. He has really been struggling this season.

Same goes for Malone. Conroy is having a great year..but is it due to his wingers? ;)

BTW, Miller is having a very good year. He has been a rock for LA

Thats because most of those were before the days when NHL players were playing for the National teams in the Olympics. Meaning all of the "good" players were playing elsewhere. Those gold medals are like participation certificates as far as I'm concerned.

Man Tkachuk has really come back with a vengance. I guess all the non-stop "chubby" jokes got him motivated.

2 more goals and an assist last night.

Last 5 games = 5g 6a

If he keeps this up... he's a lock.

I'd put those 2 on the team for teh same reason..

The USA won't win it all this year. May as well put on a player who's struggling a bit and see how he plays for his country, so you're better set up for Vancouver in 2010. Leopold should be a stud. I'm a big Malone fan.

As for Conroy.. he's a setup man who can play good defense. I'd take him on that US team any day.
